I love him. Every Georgetown fan loves him. He helped build this program and made it a national power. But it is nowhere close to that now. With their loss to Creighton on Sunday, the Hoyas are now 0-17 in the Big East. They have never started that bad. They have lost seventeen straight games. To be completely honest the program has hit rock bottom.

Patrick Ewing Should Resign

At the time of this writing, Georgetown is 211th in both the NET rankings and in KenPom. There is only one Power 6 team that is lower than the Hoyas in both of those rankings. They are 156th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 256th in adjusted defensive efficiency. They don’t have a single quad 1 or 2 win and have three quad 3 losses and one quad 4 loss. That is bad. Really bad.

There was so much hype around Ewing’s hiring. There was a ton of hype as recently as eleven months ago when the Hoyas shocked the nation and made that magical run in New York to win the Big East Tournament. Ewing brought in the country’s 16th best recruiting class coming into this season, including five-star Aminu Mohammed. But everything since has been a disaster.

That tournament appearance is one of only two postseason appearances that Georgetown has had under Ewing as head coach. The other one was the 2019 NIT. That’s not what Georgetown should be doing. They should be going dancing every year, not sitting at home.

Really the only thing that Ewing has done consistently right during his tenure on The Hilltop is recruiting high school guys. He has pulled in some very good classes and recruits. But once those recruits are here he can’t get them to stay. Ten players have transferred out of the program since he has been there, including stars like James Akinjo, Mac McClung, and Qudus Wahab. Even in the current times with the transfer portal, that’s still awful for a high-major program. Especially when half of those guys were starters.

That is not the only problem. The Hoyas have lost to teams they should have blown out, can’t draw many fans, and half the time the rotations in-game make no sense. Georgetown hit rock bottom on Thursday night when they lost a heartbreaker at home to perennial Big East cellar-dweller DePaul. The loss dropped them to 0-16 in conference play. They have not won since December 15th and probably won’t win again this season. I have held on to my faith in Coach Ewing for a long time. It hurts to think about and write all of this. But quite frankly things are getting embarrassing.

[pickup_prop id=”20191″]

Here is the predicament that Georgetown is in though: you can’t really fire THE Patrick Ewing, can you? As I said, he helped build this program. He and the late great Coach John Thompson Jr. There has been so much hype at times throughout his tenure. But something has to change. The status quo is not even remotely good enough. It is not even close to just ok. It is awful.

That is why I think it is time for Patrick Ewing to resign. He is not a quitter. He is not built like that and it is not in his DNA. But I do not see him resigning as quitting. What it would be is an admission that this is not working. Ewing stepping down is the best for everyone involved, from the players to the fans and to most importantly himself and the university that he helped Coach Thompson build and loves so much. It is time.

Main Photo
Embed from Getty Images

It is time for Patrick Ewing to step down as Georgetown’s head coach.
