With a nearly fully healthy roster and the addition of wing-depth, can this roster get over the hump in the Western Conference?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s safe to assume that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lillada01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Damian Lillard<\/strong><\/a>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mccolcj01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CJ McCollum<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nurkiju01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jusuf Nurkic<\/a><\/strong> will act as the star trio of this bunch, but it\u2019s all about the supporting cast this season. Have the Trail Blazers added enough to improve on the NBA\u2019s 28th-ranked defense last season? If Portland has any sort of hopes for competing with the elite teams in the West, then this is the first place to start.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Portland Trail Blazers 2020-21 Season Preview<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Reviewing the 2019-20 Campaign: Dame Dominates the Bubble\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Trail Blazers endured a tumultuous season plenty full of ups and downs in 2019-20. Overall, Portland finished 35-39, a subpar regular-season by their own standards. Before the NBA\u2019s hiatus, the season was marred with underwhelming performances and key injuries to Nurkic and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/colliza01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Collins<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then came the NBA Bubble and the magic of \u201cDame\u201d Lillard in playoff-mode. Lillard went on to win the Kia NBA Player of the Seeding Games Award, leading Portland to a 6-2 record and the eighth seed in the West. Through the eight seeding games, Lillard recorded absurd averages of 37.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 9.6 assists per night. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2020\/08\/11\/damian-lillard-historic-night\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cherry on top<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was his 61-point effort against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/nba-teams\/dallas-mavericks\/\" target=\"_self\">Dallas Mavericks<\/a> in Portland\u2019s penultimate seeding game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portland ended up squaring off against the eventual champion <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/lakers\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Lakers<\/a> in the first round of the playoffs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>LeBron James<\/strong><\/a> and the Lakers gentleman-swept Portland, a momentum-quashing defeat that included a knee injury to Lillard in Game Four.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lillard and the Trail Blazers stole the initial headlines in the bubble before James was crowned, once again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Offseason Moves<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portland\u2019s front office knew it was crucial to address the team\u2019s biggest weakness from last season, the 28th-ranked defense in the league. In one of the league\u2019s best offseason moves, the front office acquired the highly versatile <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/covinro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Covington<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Trail Blazers brought Covington in on Nov. 16 through a trade with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/rockets\/\" target=\"_self\">Houston Rockets<\/a> involving <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/arizatr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trevor Ariza<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and future draft picks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The front office wasn\u2019t done making offseason splashes. Next, they added <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kanteen01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Enes Kanter<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and forward <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jonesde02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Derrick Jones Jr.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two pieces adding depth at the wing and in the paint.<\/span><b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hoodro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rodney Hood<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opted out of his contract only to re-sign for a better deal and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anthoca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carmelo Anthony<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also returned on a one-year minimum deal. Portland added additional depth by signing the 6-foot-10 former Duke Blue Devil <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilesha01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harry Giles<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head Coach Terry Stotts will have more than enough options to plug in on the wing next season. Jones Jr. likely takes over the starting job, but Stotts has several options after that between Hood, Covington, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/trentga02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Gary Trent Jr.<\/strong><\/a> Covington doubles up as a rotational option at power forward. Nurkic, Kanter, and Giles will begin the season as the main rotation at center. Portland will return Collins midway through the season and the depth will keep growing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Portland Trail Blazers 2020-21 Season Prediction<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The front office did an exceptional job this offseason, acquiring a host of relatively bigger-name NBA talent and depth to address the team\u2019s biggest needs. Unfortunately, it all comes down to expectations. The league\u2019s 28th-ranked defense is sure to improve with the likes of Covington, Jones Jr., and Kanter. However, Portland still plays in the top-heavy Western Conference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems that expectations are even higher for the Lakers and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/clippers\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Clippers<\/a> this season, and the third-seeded <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/nuggets\/\" target=\"_self\">Denver Nuggets<\/a> are also expected to make a jump this season. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/warriors\/\" target=\"_self\">Golden State Warriors<\/a> are relatively healthy, minus <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thompkl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Klay Thompson<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/category\/jazz\/\" target=\"_self\">Utah Jazz<\/a> will be in the hunt, as are the Mavericks. So where exactly does that leave Lillard and the Trail Blazers?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They will need an MVP-caliber season from both Lillard and his counterpart McCollum, in addition to immediate gelling with the rest of the talent to make any serious waves in the West.
