It\u2019s been 13 months since the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/article\/2019\/07\/11\/report-russell-westbrook-traded-chris-paul-rockets-thunder\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rockets traded<\/span><\/a> <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/paulch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Paul<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Thunder for <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/westbru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russell Westbrook<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On the other end, Westbrook and the Rockets continued to thrive, experimenting with a small-ball lineup since the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/article\/2020\/02\/05\/reports-four-team-trade-capela-covington\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trade deadline deal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/capelca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clint Capela<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/covinro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Covington<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Westbrook recently went down with a quad injury, however, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hardeja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Harden<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remains the top dog in Houston.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With all of this intrigue, the Rockets and Thunder finished with identical records at 44-28. Houston grabbed the fourth seed thanks to some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thunderousintentions.com\/2020\/08\/16\/okc-thunder-tiebreak-oddity-fifth\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">funky tie-breaker rules<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Oklahoma City is the fifth seed. Nonetheless, this matchup of former teammates has fans on the edge of their seats. The series kicks off on Tuesday, August 18th at 6:30 pm ET.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>NBA Playoffs Preview: Houston Rockets vs. Oklahoma City Thunder\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Backcourt<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naturally, this NBA Playoffs preview starts with the backcourt. Both teams stock their respective star power in the backcourt. On one end, the Rockets utilize a rotation with nobody over 6-foot-7 receiving any regular minutes: the small-ball lineup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The Rockets might be playing small ball&#8230;but it&#8217;s working, says <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HowardBeck?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@HowardBeck<\/a> \ud83d\udc40<\/p>\n<p>Rockets-Clippers tonight on TNT <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DHXrbousws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/DHXrbousws<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BleacherReport\/status\/1235699216699228162?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March 5, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Thunder, this team\u2019s success rolls with Paul, who earned his 10th NBA All-Star appearance this year. <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilgesh01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schrode01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dennis Schroder<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> round out an elite three-guard rotation for Oklahoma City. Throughout the season, all three guards averaged at least 17.6 points per game on better than 46.9 percent shooting from the field. Additionally, this trio averaged a combined 14.0 assists per game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Houston, the guard play features two NBA superstars in Harden and Westbrook. The Rockets will have to overcome the injury to Westbrook, who has been deemed out for this first-round matchup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Westbrook is a huge loss for Houston, although Harden has been in MVP form all season. Based on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/friv\/mvp.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">module from Basketball-Reference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Harden will likely finish second in the overall-season MVP award race. Harden leads his squad in points (34.1), assists (8.9), steals (2.7), and rebounds (8.3).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the year, Houston ranked sixth in the NBA in offensive efficiency rating. The Rockets utilized space and pace with their lack of size. As a result, they scored the ninth-most fast-break points in the league this year and played at the second-fastest pace of play. Meanwhile, Oklahoma City owns a league-best opponent fast-break points.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This matchup will also come down to the turnover battle. Houston ranks fourth in the league with 18.9 points off turnovers per game. The Thunder give up the league\u2019s seventh-best opponent points off turnovers at 16.0 per night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s less room for error for Houston with the loss of Westbrook, but it\u2019s hard to argue against the MVP-caliber play from Harden.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Advantage: Houston Rockets\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<h3><b>Frontcourt\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The frontcourt matchup for the Rockets and Thunder provides far less star power but will go a long way in this series. Oklahoma City features their mainstay in <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/adamsst01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steven Adams<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alongside <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gallida01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danilo Gallinari<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and rookie <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dortlu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luguentz Dort<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the three. Standing 6-foot-11, Adams gives the Thunder a size advantage in the frontcourt. Adams ranks top-40 in the league in per-game averages in both rebounds (9.3) and blocks (1.1).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His lack of mobility may prove an issue against the small-ball lineup. Enter Gallinari and Dort, mobile and smaller forwards who can keep pace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dort is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thunderousintentions.com\/2020\/08\/16\/okc-thunder-dort-questionable-game-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">currently day-to-day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a knee injury but is expected back in this series. Gallinari is the team\u2019s fourth-leading scorer at 14.7 points per game. He also ranks second, draining at least 1.9 three-pointers a night. Dort is solid at 9.1 points per game in 26.1 minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While both squads struggle defending the paint, overall, both are better-than-average defensively. Oklahoma City owns the league\u2019s seventh-best defensive rating, while Houston ranks 15th in this category.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Houston, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tuckepj01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">P.J. Tucker<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/covinro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Covington<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gordoer01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Gordon<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> man their three-forward lineup. Covington is a pest defensively, averaging 8.3 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. Tucker and Gordon add a layer of mobility for the frontcourt of this lineup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oklahoma City is certainly bigger, but, if Houston can dictate the style of play in this series, their frontcourt mobility holds an edge.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Advantage: Houston Rockets<\/b><\/h4>\n<h3><b>Bench<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relatively, neither of these lineups possesses major depth. Typically, the Thunder use seven or eight-man rotations. This season, only eight Thunder players averaged more than 20 minutes per game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rockets are thin as well, however, head coach <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/1861580\/2020\/06\/09\/mike-dantoni-qa-doing-away-with-7-man-rotations-mulligans-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mike D\u2019Antoni said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his squad will go nine-men deep during the restart and postseason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houston utilizes <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/riverau01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Austin Rivers<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greenje02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeff Green<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mclembe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben McLemore <\/a><\/b>the <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most off the bench. With the absence of Westbrook, it\u2019s likely Rivers or McLemore will slide into the starting five. Overall, Houston ranked 28th in the league in bench points per game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schroder, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/diallha01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hamidou Diallo<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bazleda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darius Bazley<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/n\/noelne01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nerlens Noel<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are Oklahoma City\u2019s best options off the bench. Schroder receives sixth-man type minutes, while Bazley and Diallo add 13 and 10.6 points per game, respectively, in the bubble. Noel adds size to the bench and leads the team with 1.5 blocks per game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Advantage: Oklahoma City Thunder\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<h3><b>Intangibles and Coaching\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Paul has played with a chip on his shoulder since last year\u2019s trade to Oklahoma City. This series gives the veteran guard a great opportunity to show Houston what they\u2019re missing. Houston feels as if they\u2019ve upgraded to a younger, more athletic guard in Westbrook. Surely, they will miss his presence in this series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another factor involves Houston\u2019s small-ball. This lineup has been successful, racking up 15 wins in 25 games since Capela\u2019s departure. If Houston can dictate their style of play, run the court, get in passing lanes, and knockdown threes, they will hold a distinct advantage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both head coaches in this matchup have enjoyed NBA success. Thunder head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/donovbi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Billy Donovan<\/a> owns a .608 winning percentage in five seasons. In four seasons with Houston, D\u2019Antoni holds a .682 winning percentage. The scales tip in D\u2019Antoni\u2019s favor as he holds 16 years of NBA head coaching experience and is often lauded for his ability to dictate pace and score at-will. D\u2019Antoni is decorated with two NBA Coach of the Year awards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Advantage: Houston Rockets\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<h3><b>Final Prediction: Houston Rockets in 6 Games<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the absence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/westbru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russell Westbrook<\/a>, this series will play a lot closer than previously expected.
