Beginning on July 31st, the top 22 teams will compete at Disney World\u2019s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida. Given that there will be a secured \u201cbubble\u201d, concerns over the spread of COVID-19, and no fans, it\u2019s safe to say that this will be a season finish unlike any other. Taking the unique NBA landscape into consideration, the Last Word on Pro Basketball staff continues this contenders or pretenders series with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprobasketball.com\/nba-teams\/brooklyn-nets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brooklyn Nets<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can the league\u2019s most-depleted roster overcome the odds in the NBA Disney Bubble?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Contenders or Pretenders: Brooklyn Nets<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Stars Opting out\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heading into the NBA Disney Bubble, Brooklyn\u2019s roster will look completely different than before play was suspended in March. Not one, not two, not three or four, but five Nets decided to opt-out of playing for the NBA restart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star point guard <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/irvinky01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyrie Irving<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nothinbutnets.com\/2020\/07\/15\/brooklyn-nets-upgrade-viewing-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vocal about sitting out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the restart, citing his wishes to remain focused on social reform. This is more of a chemistry issue for the Nets. Irving <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/article\/2020\/03\/03\/brooklyn-nets-kyrie-irving-undergoes-shoulder-surgery\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underwent season-ending shoulder surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> back in March, however, his leadership will be missed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following positive COVID-19 tests, both <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dinwisp01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spencer Dinwiddie<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jordade01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DeAndre Jordan<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announced they would not play. Veterans <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/princta02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taurean Prince<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chandwi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wilson Chandler<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also decided to stay home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These losses will force interim head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vaughja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacque Vaughn<\/a> to use an entirely different starting lineup and rotation for the Nets. These aren\u2019t just role players sitting out, but five starters or key contributors that Brooklyn is without.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from Irving, Dinwiddie and Prince were usually penciled into the Nets starting lineup each night. Dinwiddie, a combo guard, started in 49 games and averaged 31.2 minutes of action. He led the team in points (20.6) and assists (6.8) per game. Prince started in 61 of the Nets 64 games, scoring 12.1 points per game.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Replacement Cast\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With such a depleted roster, Brooklyn has scrambled to put together a complete roster for the restart. This process has also proved problematic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nets signed journeyman veteran <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/beaslmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Beasley<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a substitution player on July 9th. By July 16th, he was declared out after testing positive for COVID-19. The Nets also signed <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderju01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Anderson<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who was only able to join the team yesterday after issues testing positive for COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/leverca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caris LeVert<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harrijo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Harris<\/a>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/allenja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarrett Allen<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highlight the names of players Brooklyn Nets fans are familiar with. The rest of the rotations will enlist new additions and depth chart players including <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crawfja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamal Crawford<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chiozch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Chiozza<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kurucro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rodions Kurucs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/musadz01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dzanan Musa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thomala01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lance Thomas<\/a>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsty01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Johnson<\/a>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Lack of Size\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With all of the changes to the Nets roster, the biggest question mark is the team\u2019s lack of front-court depth. Brooklyn is down to one true center with Allen. Allen is a solid option, starting 58 games this year and averaging nearly a double-double (10.6 points and 9.5 rebounds per game).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kurucs, Musa, and Thomas round out the Nets front-court, although each is undersized for their positions. Kurucs and Musa stand at 6-foot-9, while Thomas is listed at 6-foot-8.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guard play will be vital for the undersized Nets. LeVert was playing his best basketball before the season suspension. Over Brooklyn\u2019s last 16 games, LeVert averaged 24.1 points and 5.3 assists, while shooting 41.3 percent from three-point range. Harris started in 63 of 64 games this year, scoring 13.9 points per game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rest of the guard play is a question mark. Chiozza will start at point guard with only 28 career games played. And what can fans expect out of a 40-year-old Crawford, the oldest active player in the league?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Look to the Future &#8211; Brooklyn Nets Verdict: Pretender<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, Brooklyn sits in the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference at 30-34 overall. The Nets are 0.5 games ahead of the eighth seed <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprobasketball.com\/nba-teams\/orlando-magic\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Orlando Magic<\/a> and six games up on the ninth seed <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprobasketball.com\/nba-teams\/washington-wizards\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Wizards<\/a>. At the very least, Brooklyn will be forced into a play-in situation for eighth entering the playoffs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brooklyn&#8217;s status as contenders or pretenders comes down to one thing: the roster. This cast of substitution players doesn\u2019t have nearly enough talent to make waves in the NBA playoffs. Regardless, the future is bright for the Brooklyn Nets. Last offseason, the Nets acquired stars Irving and<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Durant<\/a><\/strong>. With a healthy roster, and continued improvement from Dinwiddie, LeVert, and Prince, the Nets will be a top-tier team.
