We all know how that went down. From legendary players and coaches to fantastic teams, the Big East has a historic past that can not go unnoticed.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Big East All-Time Series, Part 1<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Butler Bulldogs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h4><strong>Best team: 2009-2010<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As a member then of the Horizon League, the Bulldogs captured the nation\u2019s heart en route to making it to the National Championship on the heels of a 33-5 record. When squared up against almighty Duke, the upstart Bulldogs gave the Blue Devils all they could handle. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/haywago01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordon Hayward<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s near half-court attempt at the buzzer nearly went in. Still, this team took Butler from a mid-major darling to a big-time player on the national circuit.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IuL81v10jLM<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Best Player: Gordon Hayward<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>While other Bulldogs rank higher in the career record books, Hayward is the player who captivated not only the nation but also NBA scouts. In his time with Butler, he <span class=\"pwa-mark\" data-pwa-id=\"pwa-2D2D66118AC9FF5BD30A99A54227E556\" data-pwa-rule-id=\"PASSIVE_VOICE\" data-pwa-category=\"style\" data-pwa-hint=\"Passive verbs make your writing less direct. He amassed a 77.2 winning percentage (166-149) while taking the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament in four of the five years with the school. It was under his stewardship that Butler made it to the NCAA Championship twice (in back-to-back years no less), which elevated the school\u2019s profile. That allowed Butler to receive an invitation to the Big East conference.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Creighton Bluejays<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Best Team: 1973-74<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In the last year under Hall of Fame coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/eddie-sutton-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eddie Sutton<\/a><\/strong>, the 1973-74 Creighton team advanced to the regional semifinals and compiled a 23-7 record. Backed by the duo of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/gene-harmon-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gene Harmon<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/doug-brookins-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Brookins<\/a><\/strong>, this Bluejays squad was the farthest Creighton has ever advanced in the NCAA Tournament.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Best Player: Doug McDermott<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Who else but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcderdo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Doug McDermott<\/strong><\/a>? He ranks fifth on the all-time NCAA Division I scoring list with 3,150 points. He accumulated a 65.0 winning percentage (327-176) while taking the Bluejays to seven NCAA Tournaments and five NIT appearances in his sixteen years at the school. His successor \u2014 and current coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/greg-mcdermott-2.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greg McDermott<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 has the chance to pass him for this honor if he sticks with the school as long as Altman did.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>DePaul Blue Demons<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Best Team: 1978-79<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Although the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/timcasey\/2019\/04\/06\/how-the-1979-final-four-helped-propel-college-basketball-nba-to-new-business-heights\/#d7e219f20648\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1979 Final Four<\/a> was more known for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/birdla01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Larry Bird<\/a><\/strong> and Indiana State going up against <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsma02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Magic Johnson<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprobasketball.com\/2020\/04\/30\/big-ten-all-time-series-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michigan State<\/a> in the National Championship, <span class=\"pwa-mark\" data-pwa-id=\"pwa-BE07BC5B5732AE9556531189617D3F31\" data-pwa-rule-id=\"SIMPLE_SPELLING\" data-pwa-category=\"spelling\" data-pwa-hint=\"Unknown word: DePaul\" data-pwa-suggestions=\"DePauw~Daniel~Pole~Tiepolo~Deal\" data-pwa-heavy=\"false\" data-pwa-dictionary-word=\"DePaul\">DePaul<\/span> was ever so close to playing Michigan State in the finals. The Blue Demons posted a 26-6 record that season and took the city of Chicago by heart. Sure, technically we could have given this honor to the 1945 team that won the NIT Championship \u2014 which at the time was the premier tournament \u2014 on the back of legendary big-man <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mikange01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Mikan<\/a><\/strong>. He ranks 19<sup>th<\/sup> in the NCAA in all-time wins (724). He took the Demons to 13 NCAA Tournaments, and many NIT appearances and the aforementioned NIT title in 1945. For 42 years, Meyer was a staple in Chicago sports and you can\u2019t think about DePaul without the image of his gap-toothed smile lighting up a room.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Georgetown Hoyas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Best Team: 1983-84<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Hoyas were a beast in the early-to-mid 1980s. Georgetown made it to three Final Fours in four years (1982, 1984 and 1985). While the 1984-85 team was slightly more dominant, conference mate Villanova upset them in the 1985 championship. However, the year prior, the Hoyas had hardly any blemishes en route to a 35-3 record while winning the title over <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/o\/olajuha01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hakeem Olajuwon<\/a><\/strong> and the Houston Cougars.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Best Player: Patrick Ewing<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As the anchor of Georgetown\u2019s dominance in the 1980s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=ewingpa01,ewingpa02&amp;search=Patrick+Ewing&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Patrick Ewing<\/strong><\/a> is as easy a selection as we have had in this exercise. He was a consensus three-time All-American and the 1985 College Player of the Year. Ewing ranks second in all-time scoring at Georgetown while ranking first in both rebounds and blocks.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Honorable Mention: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/sleepy-floyd-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric \u201cSleepy\u201d Floyd<\/a><\/strong><\/h5>\n<h4><strong><span class=\"pwa-mark\" data-pwa-id=\"pwa-7856D4B90C42FE1DFEBD64D76FC12BF3\" data-pwa-rule-id=\"SIMPLE_SPELLING\" data-pwa-category=\"spelling\" data-pwa-hint=\"Incorrect named entity spelling: Best Coach\" data-pwa-suggestions=\"Bert Roach\" data-pwa-heavy=\"false\" data-pwa-dictionary-word=\"Best Coach\">Best Coach<\/span>: John Thompson<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Thompson is a college basketball coaching legend and is the architect behind Georgetown\u2019s rise to national prominence. His numbers speak for themselves: a 71.4 winning percentage (596-239), three <span class=\"pwa-mark\" data-pwa-id=\"pwa-8EE948A5074B9B9672E5FFFBC7F439D1\" data-pwa-rule-id=\"WEAK_ADJ\" data-pwa-category=\"style\" data-pwa-hint=\"Can you use a stronger adjective than 'final'\" data-pwa-suggestions=\"Last Four appearances\" data-pwa-heavy=\"false\" data-pwa-dictionary-word=\"Final Four appearances\">Final Four appearances<\/span>, and a place in the College Basketball Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Marquette Golden Eagles<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Best Team: 1976-77<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Marquette\u2019s one and only championship team have to be the pick here. Although Marquette had some better teams on paper, the 1976-77 team was seemingly a team of destiny. Marquette beat North Carolina to win the championship in legendary coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/al-mcguire-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al McGuire<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s last season. They finished the season with a 25-7 record and let McGuire go out in style.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Best Player: Dwyane Wade<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Perhaps he doesn\u2019t have the longevity of other stars\u00a0or the ultimate hardware (see <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/leebu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Butch Lee<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/ellisbo02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bo Ellis<\/a><\/strong>), but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wadedw01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dwyane Wade<\/strong><\/a> was a player that had a <span class=\"pwa-mark\" data-pwa-id=\"pwa-7A329E49CAB310FBBEC3E76DD04061DD\" data-pwa-rule-id=\"SIMPLE_SPELLING\" data-pwa-category=\"spelling\" data-pwa-hint=\"Unknown word: skillset\" data-pwa-suggestions=\"skill set~skillet~skill-set~Skillset\" data-pwa-heavy=\"false\" data-pwa-dictionary-word=\"skillset\">skillset<\/span> that perhaps no one before him rivaled. He led the Golden Eagles to the 2003 Final Four in his brief two-year career at Marquette. He was a consensus first-team All-American in 2003 and Conference USA Player of the year.
