Now, perhaps the greatest dunker in dunk contest history has nothing to show for his herculean efforts.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Aaron Gordon Should be a Two-Time Dunk Contest Champion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Highway Robbery<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In 2016, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lavinza01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach LaVine<\/a><\/strong> took home the dunk contest title in perhaps the greatest showdown since <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jordami01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Jordan<\/a><\/strong> took on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wilkido01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dominique Wilkins<\/a><\/strong> in 1988. Gordon came in as the runner-up, despite having one of the greatest dunks in contest history. The contest came down to a &#8220;dunk-off&#8221;, and LaVine edged Gordon out at the last second.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon posted one of the most memorable dunks of all-time when he went underneath his legs and over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprobasketball.com\/nba-teams\/orlando-magic\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Orlando Magic<\/a> mascot, but it was all for naught.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In 2016, Aaron Gordon gave us one of the best dunk contest performances ever \ud83e\udd2f<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, he gets another shot at the title. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iwT5U75XYT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/iwT5U75XYT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NBA on ESPN (@ESPNNBA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ESPNNBA\/status\/1228808705111711745?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">February 15, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It was an absolute travesty that Gordon walked away empty-handed, though LaVine put on a performance for the ages.\u00a0In 2020, Gordon had the chance to redeem himself and earn a long-coveted dunk contest title.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>History Repeats Itself<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For the 2020 version of the contest, there were two rounds. Of four contestants, the two with the highest scores in the first round would advance to the championship. They would then dunk twice to determine the winner. Gordon posted a perfect score of 100 (50 points for each dunk) in the first round to advance to the finals. He would take on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jonesde02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derrick Jones Jr.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0who posted a solid 97 in the opening round.<\/p>\n<p>Both contestants would go on to post a perfect 100-point round in the Finals. That brought Gordon&#8217;s total to an unprecedented 200-for-100, while Jones scored 197. However, the first round numbers didn&#8217;t count towards the final tally.<\/p>\n<p>The disappointment was in Gordon&#8217;s eyes before the &#8220;overtime&#8221; period. He stood to the side, signaling his belief that he should have to prove no more to earn the crown. With one dunk to go, both players still sat in a tie.<\/p>\n<p>Jones notched a 48 in his final outing, bringing his dunk contest total to 295. Gordon &#8212; despite jumping over 7&#8217;6 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/f\/fallta01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tacko Fall<\/a><\/strong> &#8212; only earned a 47 on his final dunk, falling a single point short of hoisting the trophy. Overall, he earned 297 of 300 possible points.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Aaron Gordon: Greatest in Dunk Contest History<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Gordon may very well be the greatest dunker in dunk contest history. Full stop. He is overwhelmingly the greatest since <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cartevi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vince Carter<\/a><\/strong> wowed the world nearly 20 years ago.
