{"id":24437,"date":"2019-08-05T19:40:23","date_gmt":"2019-08-05T23:40:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/?p=24437"},"modified":"2019-08-05T19:41:59","modified_gmt":"2019-08-05T23:41:59","slug":"eastern-conference-title-contenders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2019\/08\/05\/eastern-conference-title-contenders\/","title":{"rendered":"Eastern Conference Title Contenders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The probable Eastern Conference title contenders have shifted during the NBA&#8217;s wild offseason. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/leonaka01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kawhi Leonard<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>left the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/TOR\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Raptors<\/a>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/irvinky01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyrie Irving<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Durant<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/NJN\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brooklyn Nets<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/PHI\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia 76ers<\/a> revamped their roster. These moves, alongside others, changed the landscape of the Eastern Conference for next season.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Eastern Conference Title Contenders<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Milwaukee Bucks<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/milwaukee-bucks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Milwaukee Bucks<\/a> will always be a contender as long as\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/antetgi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>remains in their city. Antetokounmpo is the reigning MVP of the league, and arguably the most unstoppable player in today&#8217;s game.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/middlkh01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Khris Middleton<\/a><\/strong> was Antetokounmpo&#8217;s sidekick last season. Middleton had a terrific season, accompanied by his first All-Star appearance. He was handed a massive extension this offseason, keeping the Bucks alive as a championship threat. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lopezbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brook Lopez<\/a> <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hillge01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Hill<\/a><\/strong> also stayed with the team this summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bledser01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Bledsoe<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is an integral piece to the Bucks&#8217; backcourt, but <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brogdma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malcolm Brogdon<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s departure leaves question marks at the other guard position.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/matthwe02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wesley Matthews<\/a><\/strong> will likely start, but his decline has already begun. Time will tell if Matthews can make up for the loss of Brogdon.<\/p>\n<p>The Bucks still have a solid bench featuring names like\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/korveky01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Korver<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lopezro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robin Lopez<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/ilyaser01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ersan Ilyasova<\/a><\/strong>. The recent signing of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bendedr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dragan Bender<\/a><\/strong> can prove to be a shrewd pick up for the Bucks as he was a top-five pick just a few drafts ago. Milwaukee will need Bender to carve a niche as a productive stretch-four to ease the loss of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mirotni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikola Miroti\u0107<\/a><\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Philadelphia 76ers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The 76ers lost one of the NBA&#8217;s superstars in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/butleji01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmy Butler<\/a><\/strong>. Normally this would stifle a team&#8217;s chances as contenders, but the 76ers reloaded quite well.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/embiijo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joel Embiid<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/simmobe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Simmons<\/a><\/strong> are still on the team. Both are among the top players at their position. Embiid is a bonafide superstar while Simmons is a triple-double threat who can join the elite tier if he develops a better jump shot.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harrito02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tobias Harris<\/a><\/strong>, a fringe All-Star and great scorer, opted to re-sign after being traded to the 76ers midseason.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of losing Butler for nothing, the 76ers acquired\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/richajo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Richardson<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>in a sign-and-trade with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/MIA\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miami Heat<\/a>. Richardson is a decent shooter and a very solid backcourt sidekick to Simmons. In a surprising move, the 76ers also managed to sign\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/horfoal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Horford<\/a><\/strong> away from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/BOS\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Celtics<\/a>. Horford can stretch the floor playing with Embiid and is a strong defender. Horford won&#8217;t light up the stat sheet but is one of the more impactful big men in the league.<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia has one of the best starting fives in the league. There are plenty of questions surrounding their bench, however. The main contributors are likely to be\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithzh01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zhaire Smith<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/ennisja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Ennis<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/burketr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trey Burke<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=scottmi01,scottmi02&amp;search=Mike+Scott&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Scott<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/o\/oquinky01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle O&#8217;Quinn<\/a><\/strong>. The 76ers are banking on a big jump by Smith for their bench to be somewhat competitive.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Potential Eastern Conference Title Contenders<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Boston Celtics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Celtics lost Irving in the offseason to the Nets. They remain a threat, however, due to them picking up the best replacement available in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/walkeke02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kemba Walker<\/a><\/strong>. Walker is a proven All-Star with a desire to win. He was a great addition to a team with plenty of young talent.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatumja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jayson Tatum<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownja02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaylen Brown<\/a><\/strong> are both studs. Both players have future All-Star potential but need to make that jump this season. Tatum had a stellar rookie season but didn&#8217;t show much improvement the following year. Brown is entering his fourth professional season and needs to prove he can be more than a third or fourth option.<\/p>\n<p>The Celtics still have their dark horse in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/haywago01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordon Hayward<\/a><\/strong>. He was on the cusp of stardom before his gruesome leg injury a few seasons ago.<\/p>\n<p>Losing Horford was a major blow to the Celtics, as they replaced him with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kanteen01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Enes Kanter<\/a><\/strong>. Kanter is, by all means, a decent center, but better suited off the bench. Kanter is looked at as more of a spark plug than someone to protect the paint.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smartma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Smart<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is a strong option off the bench, but much of the bench remains unproven. The Celtics have a strong crop of rookies in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/langfro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Romeo Langford<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willigr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grant Williams<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/edwarca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carsen Edwards<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/tacko-fall-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tacko Fall<\/a><\/strong>. If these players are immediate contributors then the Celtics may be better than some think.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Indiana Pacers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The league won&#8217;t truly know how good these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/IND\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indiana Pacers<\/a> can be until\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/o\/oladivi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Victor Oladipo<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>returns to the lineup. Oladipo has shown that he has the potential to lead a team to a deep playoff run.<\/p>\n<p>The Pacers lost\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bogdabo02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bojan Bogdanovic<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngth01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thaddeus Young<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/collida01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darren Collison<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/josepco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cory Joseph<\/a><\/strong> this offseason. They did a strong job finding replacements, however.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/warretj01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T.J. Warren<\/a><\/strong>, an underrated scorer, came in to replace Bogdanovic. Young was replaced by\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sabondo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Domantas Sabonis<\/a><\/strong>. Sabonis was already on the roster and ready to improve his role for a couple of seasons now. Adding Brogdon from Milwaukee was an upgrade over Collison, while <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lambje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeremy Lamb<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mccontj01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T.J. McConnell<\/a><\/strong> provide backcourt bench help. Lamb was already an NBA starter, and should decently fill the void for Oladipo until he returns.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/turnemy01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Myles Turner<\/a><\/strong> remains the team&#8217;s center. He has continued to improve and has future All-Star written all over him. Behind him, the team has <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bitadgo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Goga Bitadze<\/a><\/strong>, a rookie with potential from the country of Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>Indiana does not have a star-studded roster, but should not be slept on when healthy.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Fringe Eastern Conference Title Contenders<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Brooklyn Nets<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Nets had the best off-season in the league behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/los-angeles-clippers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Clippers<\/a>. This, of course, is due to them adding Irving and Durant. The league will have to wait to see the true potential of this duo, however, as Durant is likely to be sidelined all of next season.<\/p>\n<p>With that being said, the Nets will still be a solid team. Irving is going to have a great supporting cast around him in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/leverca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caris LeVert<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harrijo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Harris<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/princta02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taurean Prince<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dinwisp01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spencer Dinwiddie<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kurucro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rodions Kurucs<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jordade01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DeAndre Jordan<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/allenja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarrett Allen<\/a><\/strong>. LeVert continues to improve despite dealing with injury concerns. Harris is one of the league&#8217;s elite three-point shooters. Prince, Dinwiddie, and Kurucs are excellent role players who fill their niches quite well. Jordan remains one of the top rebounders and shot-blockers in the league, while Allen becomes the top big man bench option in the league.<\/p>\n<p>After his stint with the Celtics, there are questions surrounding Irving&#8217;s ability to be a leader. He&#8217;s one of the most talented players in the league, but the Nets aren&#8217;t likely to be an immediate threat as Eastern Conference contenders next season.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Toronto Raptors<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Raptors lost Leonard, but they are still the defending champions. The team kept a large portion of their players from last season, and they know how to win.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lowryky01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Lowry<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gasolma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marc Gasol<\/a><\/strong> are two of the best veterans in the league. Lowry&#8217;s stats dipped last season with Leonard taking over a lot of duties, but he&#8217;s still an above-average point guard. Gasol is a strong presence inside, but also a modern center with great vision and the ability to stretch the floor.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/siakapa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pascal Siakam<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>won the NBA Most Improved Player award last season, and should only get better as he is likely to become the team&#8217;s number-one option. Don&#8217;t be surprised if Siakam becomes an All-Star. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anunoog01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OG Anunoby<\/a><\/strong>, a terrific defender, returns after missing the playoffs as well.<\/p>\n<p>Another big loss for the Raptors was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greenda02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danny Green<\/a><\/strong>. Green is an elite three-and-d player and will be replaced by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/powelno01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Norman Powell<\/a><\/strong>. Powell has been a solid bench option, but it remains to be seen if he can become a successful starter.
