The Philadelphia 76ers have made a few big moves this summer<\/a> and will likely make several more roster decisions in the coming months.<\/p>\n

76ers Expected to Move Off Young Forward to Open Roster Spot for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope: What Does KCP Bring to Sixers<\/h2>\n

One such decision will likely come today when Kentavious Caldwell-Pope,<\/a> who has agreed to sign with the 76ers<\/a>, clears waivers. The Sixers have 14 players on standard contracts with salaries totaling $206.8 million, thus leaving them $2.12 million below the first apron, where they are hardcapped.<\/p>\n

As a result of their financial constraints, the Sixers will have to make a roster move before signing Caldwell-Pope. According to Adam Aaronson of the Philly Voice, the Sixers have four options involving two players\u2014Jabari Walker<\/a> or Johni Broome<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Broome has a fully guaranteed $2.1 million contract this year as part of the four-year deal he signed after being selected in the second round last year out of Auburn. Broome, who received 55 minutes of playing time with the 76ers, spent most of last year with the G-League Delaware Blue Coats, where he excelled. The 2025 NBA G-League Showcase first-team selection had a strong Summer League showing, compiling 14.7 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.0 steal, and 1.0 block in three games. However, he struggled with turnovers and didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, with shooting splits of 45.2\/13.3\/25.0.<\/p>\n

Walker is an experienced player with 230 NBA games played over his four seasons. While the 23-year-old hasn’t been able to carve out a major role the last two seasons, he had a pretty strong 2023-24 campaign and was productive last season when he received significant minutes. He averaged 4.3 points on 45.5% shooting from the field and 3.0 rebounds in 12 minutes over 64 games, including six starts. He also produced two double-doubles and scored in double figures six times, topping the 20-point mark twice.<\/p>\n

Keith Smith of Sportac<\/a> previously reported that the 76ers were trying to find a trade partner for Broome. Which makes sense, because the 6-9 two-way center figures to have more appeal around the league due to his defensive abilities. But with the Sixers’ recent moves, he figures to be their fourth option at center at best — behind Joel Embiid,<\/a> Adem Bona<\/a>, and Ariel Hukporti<\/a>, and further down the depth chart in the frontcourt overall. Dean Wade<\/a>, LeBron James,<\/a> and Dominik Barlow<\/a> can also play the 5.<\/p>\n

While Broome has more upside, Walker is more versatile and more polished on the offensive end. Walker can play both forward spots and is a more capable floor spacer than Broome. Plus, it will cost the Sixers almost the identical cap hit to waive Broome as it would to waive Walker. As Aaronson said, if the Sixers stretch Broome’s contract over seven years, their salary cap hit will only be $300,000 this year.<\/p>\n

What Does Kentavious Caldwell-Pope Bring To the 76ers?<\/h3>\n

Caldwell-Pope exercised his $21.61 million player option in late June. But Caldwell-Pope wasn’t expected to suit up for Memphis this year, and the 33-year-old and the Grizzlies negotiated a buyout on Saturday afternoon, so he could play for the Sixers and reunite with James.\u00a0 He and James<\/a> spent three years together with the Lakers.<\/p>\n
