The Minnesota Timberwolves spent weeks trying to convince LeBron James<\/a> to join a team built around Anthony Edwards<\/a> and LaMelo Ball<\/a>. His decision to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers<\/a> ended that pursuit, but it also made one thing clear. Minnesota entered its biggest summer<\/a> knowing the LaMelo Ball trade<\/a> would leave holes on the roster. James would have been the easiest answer. Now the front office must find another one before those questions become problems.<\/p>\n

Lebron James Could Solve One Problem<\/h3>\n

The Timberwolves did not chase James only because of his resume. They also saw a player who could fit a roster that changed after the trade for Ball. Minnesota gave up Julius Randle<\/a> and Naz Reid<\/a> to complete that deal. The move gave the team another star guard, but it also removed two players who handled most of the minutes at power forward.<\/p>\n

Adding James on a minimum contract would have softened that loss. He could have played alongside Rudy Gobert<\/a>, created offense, and given head coach Chris Finch another experienced frontcourt option. Instead, Minnesota must enter training camp without that safety net.<\/p>\n

Chris Finch Has Fewer Choices<\/h3>\n

The roster now asks Finch to solve the same problem without adding another proven starter. That leaves several possibilities, but none carry the certainty that James would have provided. Trey Lyles<\/a> has the size to play the position and can stretch the floor. Josh Green<\/a>, Jaylen Clark<\/a>\u00a0and Terrence Shannon Jr.<\/a> offer different skills, though each would create smaller lineups. Rookie Joan Beringer<\/a> also spent time at power forward during Summer League, but pairing him with Gobert could limit floor spacing.<\/p>\n

Minnesota can mix those options depending on the opponent. It cannot expect one player to replace everything that left with Randle and Reid.<\/p>\n

Rudy Gobert Could Gain More Space<\/h3>\n

A smaller lineup could help Gobert play better near the basket. Ball has made his career by setting up easy shots for his teammates, and his passing could lead to more lob opportunities than the Timberwolves had last season.<\/p>\n

The offense will not rely solely on Gobert. Edwards and Ball will remain the main focus of the team’s attack. However, improved spacing could help Gobert finish better without requiring him to go beyond his strengths. Finch believes<\/a> Gobert has already adjusted to working with different frontcourt teammates over the last three seasons.<\/p>\n

Tim Connelly Still Has Work Ahead<\/h3>\n

The offseason is not finished simply because James picked another team. Timberwolves president Tim Connelly still has one open roster spot and a history of making moves after the market slows. He waited months before trading D’Angelo Russell<\/a> in 2023, showing that he does not rush when the right deal is unavailable.<\/p>\n

This approach could be important again. The team has enough talent to compete, but it still needs balance. Minnesota’s next frontcourt addition doesn\u2019t have to match James’ skills or reputation. He just needs to give Finch another reliable option for the 82-game season.<\/p>\n

The Timberwolves still believe that pairing Ball with Edwards will improve their team, even though they missed out on James. Now, the challenge is to build the rest of the roster around this decision. Minnesota’s season didn’t end when James chose Philadelphia. Instead, it lost the easiest solution to the big question raised by the Ball trade.<\/p>\n
