Returns to the Miami Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers have been mentioned, as well as a potential move to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Are the Philadelphia 76ers a Serious Contender for LeBron James?

However, another notable name is the Philadelphia 76ers, who recently made a trade for 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown. With this deal, the Sixers have assembled a big three of Brown, former MVP Joel Embiid, and All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey.

So, if James chooses the Sixers, how would he fit with them?

Dropping Hints

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBtaczZ3NS" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072/2048;" ></smartframe-embed>

ESPN recently reported that the Sixers are still in pursuit of James through their big three, with whom James has notable connections.

Maxey is a Klutch Sports client who has trained with James in previous offseasons. Embiid was James’ teammate during the 2024 Paris Olympics. And Brown, a notable foe of James from their past Eastern Conference battles, was praised as an MVP candidate by James earlier this year.

“JB is playing great basketball, man. This whole MVP thing, I don’t understand why his name is not getting talked about some, as well. Nobody gave them a shot to start the season. He’s averaging, what, 30? Just under 30. It’s a popularity contest sometimes.”

However, his connections to the Sixers go much farther than fellow players. In addition to Maxey, head coach Nick Nurse is also a client of Klutch Sports. The team’s general manager, Jameer Nelson, spent 14 seasons in the NBA, playing against James for a number of years in the Eastern Conference.

Additionally, Sixers president of basketball operations, Mike Gansey, played against James in high school and was an executive with the Cavaliers during James’ second stint with the franchise. He recently stated that the Sixers would “love to have LeBron.”

“We’ve had conversations with Rich, really since the Jaylen trade. LeBron and his camp have kept quiet, and there has been speculation for different teams. But we’d obviously love to have LeBron. I respect the heck out of him. In my opinion, he’s the best player of all time. I think his decision is dragging out because he has a lot of good options and he wants to figure it out. He would obviously add a lot to our team. But at the end of the day, I know he’s going to make the right decision for him and his family.”

Former Golden State Warriors general manager and now president of Harris and Blitzer Sports, Bob Myers, has also made the case for James to join the Sixers. In a recent appearance on the “Game Over” podcast, Meyers kept his pitch simple: “You can win here in Philadelphia.”

More recently, James made an appearance at Fanatics Fest, where, according to ESPN reporter Dave McMenamin, he used the phrase “trust the process,” which has long been tied to the Sixers’ rebuild around Embiid during the late 2010s. However, when the large crowd reacted, James — alongside others on stage — denied that he was talking about the Sixers.

“I don’t think Embiid was even born yet,” James said, noting the phrase was something he had used since he was drafted in 2003.

Fitting In

Like many of the other teams on James’ list, the Sixers can offer James a starting roster spot as well as adequate playing time. James is an excellent passer who can facilitate and make full use of Philadelphia’s offensive firepower — which they now have a lot of thanks to Jaylen Brown.

The Sixers have fortified their depth with Dominic Barlow, VJ Edgecombe, Anfernee Simmons and Dean Wade. This means that James will not have to shoulder all of the offensive responsibility, allowing him to focus on other aspects of the game, such as playmaking and defense — both of which he’s still capable of doing at a high level.

Taking a step back offensively is something James has willingly done over the past season, allowing Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves to shine as the Lakers’ primary offensive options.

Edgecombe had this to say on James potentially joining the team:

“I think it’s been fun. If we do get him, we’ll be happy. If not, we’ll still be happy. But it would be great if we do get him.”

With the legend’s offseason looming over the NBA, and Adam Silver waiting on his decision, the question of where James will go leaves plenty of room for speculation.

© Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images

Despite being 41 years old and just wrapping up his 23rd season in the NBA, LeBron James‘ entry into free agency has been met with a lot of buzz.
