Luckily, there are many variations for an OKC lineup this coming season as they seek redemption and a chance at bigger glory. With the new season presenting different challenges and a much more intense competition, there are expectations that they will be gunning for a title once more.

The Thunder have been seeking answers this offseason, and so far, they’ve made some impressive additions, including Aday Mara, a generous selection with the 12th pick. Nonetheless, they’ve also made moves to keep Isaiah Hartenstein for a few more years, which says a lot about how they expect to field a team with size in the coming campaign.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBOGHGWTjw" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2712px; aspect-ratio: 2712/1808;" ></smartframe-embed>

The Best OKC Lineup for the 2026-27 Season

Now more than ever, Oklahoma City is expected to go with some brand-new lineups this season. However, not everything will stick around for so long, and there will always be something new to look out for from the team. Considering the brilliance of Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault, it’s highly likely the Thunder will have a different look heading into the 2026-27 season.

A ‘Battering Ram’ Lineup

One thing that the Thunder boasts at this point is its size. Keeping Chet Holmgren and Hartenstein pairing was a start, and now having Mara on the OKC bench is a solid win for the team. Assuming Thomas Sorber returns at full strength, the frontcourt will be a strength for Oklahoma City.

One idea for Daignault to try is a “battering ram lineup” featuring Mara, Holmgren, Jalen Williams, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Ajay Mitchell. This lineup projects to pack a strong offensive punch.

The Chet-Mara combo will definitely lock down the paint with spacing, allowing cutters like J-Dub to thrive and SGA to dominate with his iso plays. On the other hand, there’s also the fact that Mitchell will be able to create well in this lineup. Imagine all the lobs he can throw and the assists he can generate with all the offense surrounding him.

2025-26 Oklahoma City Thunder Most Frequently Played Lineups… pic.twitter.com/eHsyZG43hf

— Basketball University (@UofBasketball) July 6, 2026

It’s a battering-ram lineup because they pack a strong offensive punch that would give OKC options all over the floor. It’s expected that they can definitely generate points, and they won’t run out of offensive options, as they can also shoot. What makes it better is that they don’t lose size or flexibility.

‘Two-Way’ Works Best for All

Perhaps one strength to ponder is the OKC bench, which says a lot about how they are expected to be used in a very tight rotation. Well, the Thunder has players who stand out with two-way impact to begin with. Alex Caruso is the main player for this lineup, followed by Cason Wallace, with the Cookies and Cream duo capable of wreaking havoc on both ends of the floor as we’ve seen in the past few years.

The Thunder can add their big three of SGA, J-Dub, and Holmgren to that, and they now have a strong, competitive lineup that adds a two-way punch if size is an issue. IHart’s muscle will be a big help should Holmgren’s defense fail to deter opponents in the paint. But the thing is, having Caruso and Wallace — who should get extended — on the floor negates the ball from reaching the paint as they clog the passing lanes with their active hands.

OKC Thunder current roster

Alex Caruso
Lu Dort
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Isaiah Hartenstein
Chet Holmgren
Aday Mara
Jared McCain
Ajay Mitchell
Thomas Sorber
Bennett Stirtz
Nikola Topic
Cason Wallace
Jalen Williams
Jaylin Williams
Kenrich Williams
–
Brooks Barnhizer
Josh Dix
-…

— Brandon Rahbar (@BrandonRahbar) July 2, 2026

Considering that this OKC lineup would work, this should be a go-to for the Thunder for most of the time. In the playoffs, this would be an ideal five to play at any given time, with the bench supplanting whatever they need. Mitchell can go in for playmaking without losing defensive presence, while Jaylin Williams can also add size and provide shooting off the bench as well.

Shooting the Lights Out

While three-point shooting is a major weakness for the Thunder, they have taken steps to improve in this area. It’s obvious why they drafted Bennett Stirtz and Otega Oweh and signed Josh Dix to a two-way deal — it’s all for three-point shooting.

With the Thunder shipping Isaiah Joe to Detroit, it means that Jared McCain will have bigger responsibilities after his playoff rise, and either SGA or J-Dub can come in for paint deterrence and additional shooting.

Jared McCain delivering on the biggest stages…

Incredible spatial awareness. Elite movement/spot shooting. Clearly has a mentality that’s built for the moment. Will be an additive player for a long time. pic.twitter.com/NMbZA6vtAh https://t.co/KwIDl2SAi6

— Basketball University (@UofBasketball) May 22, 2026

Both Mara and Holmgren can space the floor, which makes it an impressive lineup to have them both in. Stretching the floor is crucial, and having big men who create huge spacing means they can draw paint defenders, allowing cutters to score and even run-and-gun without sacrificing their rebounding.

Takeaways in Finding the Best OKC Lineup

OKC has one of the most versatile lineups in the NBA, and it’s hard to deny they have plenty of talent to fit into their rotation. For instance, Mitchell is a key rotation player who fits well in almost every lineup the Thunder can field. His playmaking makes him an asset on offense, and his ability to stay in front of ball handlers makes him a good defensive player as well.

Mara also fits in most lineups, and he may well be as lethal as Holmgren from deep. The SGA-J-Dub combo also works for all, but availability hampers their effectiveness on the floor. Still, OKC has plenty of talent to work with in creating the best possible lineup.

At the end of the day, they still have a lot of months to figure out just how they will present themselves on the court. For all we know, Daigneault may cook up a much different combination that fans wouldn’t expect in the first place.

Photo Credit: Jerome Miron, Imagn Images via Reuters Connect

As the Oklahoma City Thunder offseason continues, there are many expectations that the team will have a different look in the upcoming campaign.
