With four players traded away, free agency has further cost them their most effective player of last season – Norman Powell.

Last year, Powell was among the exceptional players who carried the team’s burden and was their only All-Star. But now with the guard gone, how do things look for the Heat?

Will Norman Powell’s Departure Affect the Miami Heat’s Future?

Ever since the 2025-26 season ended, the real test of Miami has begun. Losing to the Charlotte Hornets was not as stressful as the recreation of the new roster has become. Had the circumstances been different, Powell would surely have been kept. But now he’s with the Chicago Bulls, basking in the security of a two-year, $45 million deal in the NBA free-agent market.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9" image-id="fwuQtAiBzSr2" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3900px; aspect-ratio: 3900/2700;" ></smartframe-embed>

Everything Powell Did for Miami

Powell’s time with Miami was one for the books. His contribution to the team, though time-restricted, was beyond ordinary. In his only year with the team, he shouldered the load in Tyler Herro‘s absence, made clutch shots, and proved himself a dependable wing scorer. Not only did he play the best basketball of his career, but he also became an All-Star for the first time in 2026, adding more flavor to his success.

Though Powell did see a decline in performance in the second half of the season owing to injuries and a change in his role, he also missed an extension of games. In total, he played 58 games and averaged 21.7 points, 2.5 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting 47.0% from the field.

After his departure last week, Miami was quick to replace him with Tim Hardaway Jr., who will handle shooting guard duties. As a veteran, Hardaway could benefit the Heat with experienced bench scoring and elite three-point shooting. Last season with the Nuggets, he played in an impressive 80 games and shot the 3-ball well. But whether he replicates Powell, outperforms him, or goes south remains to be seen.

Will History Repeat Itself After Powell?

A similar situation has occurred with Jimmy Butler in the past as well, whose skills maintained the Heat’s balance throughout the most dreadful years. But after his sudden, mid-season departure in February last year, the team’s core was badly shaken, leaving behind a gap that refused to be filled. It took the team one and a half years to restore it.

Currently, the roster is already shaken up with four players gone and four new faces added – Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis through trade, Ryan Conwell through draft, and Hardaway Jr. through free agency. But it might take them a while to find their footing here and fully embrace the ‘Heat Culture’ known for its intensity. But what’s done is done. For the upcoming season, Powell was hit-or-miss. Now, only time will tell whether the Heat can row their boat without him.

The Last Word

The Heat once had a reputation for being absolute cougars, featuring the cream of the crop in the NBA. But in the last half-decade, that image has been shattered with the questionable performance of good players. Moving ahead after creating a successful roster, winning a championship is the only and biggest agenda on their cards. Last year, a chance inclusion of Powell in a three-team deal bode well for them, but would it happen again?

The path ahead for the Heat is not easy, as it demands undoing every bad decision and performance. Their atonement without Powell could be taxing, but necessary for survival.

Photo Credit: Jim Rassol, Imagn Images via Reuters Connect

For the Miami Heat, acquiring a superstar was a very expensive gamble that has emptied their vault and wallet.
