In the grand scheme of the NBA, Summer League is not very important for teams. However, it provides a platform for young players to showcase their talents and make a case for inclusion on a team’s roster.

Some players on the Pacers Summer League team — like Braden Smith, their second-round draft pick and all-time NCAA Men’s assist leader — as well as returners like Taelon Peter and Jalen Slawson — who earned minutes during the 2025-26 season — are getting most of the attention as the players to watch. This leaves the opportunity for some unnoticed players to surprise viewers and the team, making a case to earn a roster spot in Indiana.

The Pacers play their first game on Friday, July 10th, at 4:30 p.m. ET against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Throughout the Pacers’ Summer League games, here are three underrated players who could be worth watching.

3 Pacers Summer League Players Flying Under the Radar

Tamin Lipsey

Tamin Lipsey, an undersized guard at 6’1″ and 200 pounds, was a four-year starter at Iowa State. Lipsey comes into the NBA as a very strong defensive guard, with the ability to produce consistently on offense as well. Starting all 137 games played at Iowa State, Lipsey quickly established his role as a primary ball handler and defensive anchor for the Cyclones. During his time in college, Lipsey was recognized for his level of play and finished his career with a plethora of accolades. From his sophomore to senior year, he earned three consecutive Big 12 All-Defensive Team selections, three All-Big 12 nods, and finished 25th in NCAA history for career Defensive Box Plus/Minus (5.8). He also holds the Iowa State record for career steals (314) and steals per game in a season (2.7 in 2023-24),

As a senior, Lipsey led the Big 12 in steals (77) and steals per game (2.3), all while averaging 13.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists. Notably, he also had a great offensive rating of 122.9 and a standout defensive rating of 96.3, showing how versatile he is, especially on the defensive side of the ball. With numbers like this, it is clear that Lipsey was one of the best defensive guards in all of college basketball.

Tamin Lipsey ranks as one of the top defenders in all of college basketball. He’s in the 97th percentile in overall defense, holding opponents to just 31.7% shooting. Where he truly excels is guarding P&R ball handlers, ranking in the 94th percentile and allowing a PPP of just… pic.twitter.com/Lp0aWZwnuE

— the center hub (@thecenterhub_bb) October 3, 2024

Lipsey can disrupt offenses by generating steals and breaking up passes. His smaller size never seems to be an issue, as he always plays up-tempo and with plenty of physicality, which fits in perfectly with the Pacers’ play style. Lipsey plays on-ball defense at a very high level, never allowing a player to gain space and create an open shot. He fights through screens and always makes ball handlers work, attempting to force a turnover.

Offensively, similarly to fellow rookie Pacers guard Braden Smith, Lipsey shows high basketball IQ and makes the correct reads when passing. He is a selfless player and always looks to create scoring opportunities for his teammates. Lipsey is also dangerous from the mid-range and can create space with quick ball handling.

Lipsey can be compared to the Pacers undersized guard T.J. McConnell. They both share the ability to play relentless defense, disrupt offenses, and create plays through ball handling. Lipsey will have to make a strong case to earn a roster spot and will need to showcase his ability to play both ways. He is already behind Braden Smith, which makes his path to the team more complicated; however, he creates good competition for Smith. Lipsey could easily earn a two-way contract with Indiana and develop into a replacement for the aging McConnell in the years to come.

Rienk Mast

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBfKqNFcdM" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5200px; aspect-ratio: 5200/3826;" ></smartframe-embed>

The center from Nebraska played a huge part in the Cornhuskers’ path to March Madness and helped prove that Nebraska should be taken seriously. Rienk Mast, in his final season there, started all 34 games and averaged 13.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game while shooting 44.2% from the field.

Mast was much more of a role player for the Cornhuskers, but his effect on the team’s production was crucial to the team’s success. He proved to be a good passer and often assisted teammates on open threes, being recognized as one of the better passing bigs in college basketball. He is a capable rebounder and had a career-high 8.4 rebounds per game in 2021-22 when he played for Bradley. Mast has a good frame for the NBA level, at 6’9″ and 240 pounds. He can set screens and use his size to play solid defense, while also breaking free for baskets inside the arc. He can also shoot the occasional three and isn’t afraid to jump at the opportunity when he has space. Mast is a very experienced player, having spent five seasons in college, refining his skills before entering the NBA.

Rienk Mast is returning to @HuskerMBB next season.

The 2024 Third-Team All-B1G selection missed 2024-25 while recovering from knee surgery.

Relive his career-high 34-point night in a 2024 win over Ohio State 👇 #B1GMBBall pic.twitter.com/dg0CLNQCAe

— Big Ten Men's Basketball (@B1GMBBall) March 25, 2025

Mast has the chance to display his skills with the Pacers Summer League team. However, he may have a difficult time finding his way onto the main roster. Indiana already has centers Ivica Zubac, Jay Huff, and Micah Potter. Mast could make the team through a two-way contract if he stands out during Summer League, or he could be added later in the season if the Pacers need extra depth at center. Otherwise, Mast will more than likely spend time on the Pacers’ G League team, the Noblesville Boom, further developing as a player.

Yuki Kawamura

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBEqPuRZkC" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072/2048;" ></smartframe-embed>

Often considered a “fan favorite” of his past teams, the Memphis Grizzlies and Chicago Bulls, guard Yuki Kawamura is the third Pacer to watch in Summer League. Kawamura, yet another undersized guard on Indiana, is only 5’7″ and 159 pounds. Beloved by the Bulls’ fanbase for his high energy and physicality, as well as his shooting and playmaking, Kawamura now has the ability to showcase those talents on the Pacers.

Kawamura is one of the most experienced players on the Pacers’ Summer League roster and hopes to get another chance in the NBA. He played for the Grizzlies in 2024-25 and for the Bulls this past season, earning his way onto Chicago’s roster after impressing in the G League. So far in his NBA career, he’s averaged 2.5 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists while only seeing an average of 7.6 minutes per game.

Kawamura has been considered a fun player to watch. He makes creative, highlight-worthy passes on offense while being fast and physical on defense, which fits right into the Pacers’ style. Kawamura is never afraid to defend a bigger player and has the courage and determination to stop whoever he guards. However, his size has been a major obstacle that limits his abilities, ultimately leading to his struggles to remain on an NBA roster. Kawamura will have to rely on his impressive playmaking, ball handling, shot creation and court vision to find a way onto the Pacers.

Yuki Kawamura.
NBA Assist Week.

Enjoy. pic.twitter.com/67oUWsYzfe

— NBA (@NBA) August 19, 2025

Kawamura‘s passion and flair will lead to more exciting plays that will win over the hearts of many Pacers fans, who will cheer for him to succeed just as Grizzlies and Bulls fans did. In reality, his path to a guaranteed spot is not in his favor. His size limits him significantly, and he will also be challenging other guards on the Pacers Summer League team. Kawamura could find himself on the Pacers’ G League squad and eventually work his way to a two-way contract if a spot opens up.

The Last Word

The Pacers Summer League team has some intriguing prospects. Some are getting the attention of the media, and others have quietly made the roster and hope to impress when they get their moment. Lipsey, Mast and Kawamura all quietly possess the skills needed to make a splash on the Summer League team and prove themselves worthy of roster spots. Do not be surprised if these three impress viewers and the Pacers organization alike.

© Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images

Summer League is now underway, and before the Pacers Summer League team tips off, some players may not be getting the attention they deserve.
