In an offseason that has already seen significant roster reconstruction across the league, Philadelphia’s move may be one of the most important. With the Eastern Conference changing quickly, the question now becomes whether this trade has made the 76ers the team to beat in the East.

Are The 76ers Favorites In The East Post Jaylen Brown Trade

What Jaylen Brown brings to the 76ers

Jaylen Brown gives the 76ers one of the best two-way wings in the NBA. As a former Finals MVP coming off arguably the best season of his career, Brown brings the type of playoff-proven production Philadelphia has needed for years. His fit alongside Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid also makes a lot of sense. Brown’s ability to attack the rim, play through contact, and score in transition should pair extremely well with Maxey’s speed and downhill pressure, creating a nightmare for NBA defenses.

Philadelphia needed another player it could consistently rely on in high-level playoff moments. As talented as Maxey is, he is not necessarily a number-one option on a championship team, and Embiid’s availability is always a concern. Brown gives the 76ers a reliable star who can carry offensive responsibility, defend elite wings, and produce deep into the postseason. Furthermore, if VJ Edgecombe can also make some sophomore jump, Philadelphia may have enough talent, athleticism, and two-way balance to become the best team in the Eastern Conference.

The only real question is whether the 76ers have enough depth and bench production to make a serious run. Adding Brown gives Philadelphia elite top-end talent, but with Brown, Embiid, and Maxey all on major contracts, filling out the rest of the roster becomes more difficult. If the supporting cast is not strong enough, they could still run into the same problems that have limited them in previous playoff runs.

There is also the motivation factor. Brown will seemingly arrive in Philadelphia with a chip on his shoulder after Boston was willing to move on from him without receiving a massive return. Despite coming off an incredible season, reports suggested that his value around the league was lower than expected, which should only add fuel to his next chapter. Given the mentality Brown has shown throughout his career, his decision to remain in the Eastern Conference makes this even more interesting. If the 76ers and Celtics meet in the playoffs, Brown would have the chance to prove directly to his former team and the rest of the league that they made a mistake by giving him up.

The Eastern Conference still has serious competition.

Despite Philadelphia making such a significant move, the Eastern Conference is far from straightforward. Several teams have undergone major roster changes, so the 76ers cannot be automatically crowned favorites. Kawhi Leonard‘s return to Toronto makes the Raptors difficult to ignore, especially given the defensive identity they appear to be building. A healthy Leonard still gives Toronto an elite two-way wing, and if the rest of the roster buys into that defensive foundation, they could become one of the most difficult matchups in the East.

Miami also becomes a serious threat after landing Giannis Antetokounmpo. A healthy and rejuvenated Antetokounmpo instantly changes the ceiling of any team, and his arrival gives the Heat the type of superstar presence they have been searching for. With Miami’s culture, defensive structure, and playoff experience, adding Giannis makes them a contender immediately.

Of course, the Knicks cannot be ignored after coming off a championship. Until someone knocks them off, they deserve to be treated as one of the teams to beat in the conference. That is what makes the East so fascinating. The 76ers may have made one of the biggest moves of the offseason, but Toronto, Miami, and New York all have legitimate arguments as threats to Philadelphia’s path.

Photo Credit: Bill Streicher, Imagn Images via Reuters Connect

The 76ers shocked the NBA world when they traded Paul George and draft compensation for Jaylen Brown.
