LeBron James<\/a> has turned the NBA upside down this offseason. Just as Jalen Brunson<\/a> and the New York Knicks and were basking in the spotlight, James<\/a> and the Los Angeles Lakers announced that they’re parting ways.<\/p>\n

So, pretty quickly, the talk went from celebrating the Knicks’ historic NBA title<\/a> to where James would end up next season.<\/p>\n

James has spent so much of his career linked to the same handful of destinations that it’s easy to overlook the teams nobody’s talking about. That’s where things get interesting. The Knicks, for one, would instantly become one of basketball’s biggest stories if the stars somehow aligned. There are other under-the-radar fits, too, where his playmaking, leadership and basketball IQ could reshape a contender overnight. At this stage, it’s less about building around LeBron and more about dropping him into the right situation. Sometimes the best landing spot is the one nobody sees coming.<\/p>\n

So, it’s time to ask why James might actually make sense for the Knicks<\/a> and why he may not. It would be a controversial move to see him going to the NBA title contender, but stranger things have happened.<\/p>\n

Why LeBron James Makes Sense for the Knicks \u2014 and Why He Doesn’t<\/h2>\n

The Case for LeBron James to Join the New York Knicks<\/h3>\n

So, why would James make a good fit for the Knicks? Even though this team seems pretty well set — especially after earning an NBA title — there are reasons James could be extremely useful in its lineup.<\/p>\n

According to a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania<\/a>, James is willing to take a minimum contract if it means joining a real, contending team. The Knicks certainly qualify as that.<\/p>\n

New York obviously can’t afford to pay James a max deal. He was making around $50 million a year with the Lakers, and that’s just not realistic for the Knicks. That number is also unrealistic for most franchises, which suddenly makes Knicks’ chances of attracting him higher. If nobody can pay, then suddenly, everyone is on an even playing field to get James, no matter what kind of funding they have available.<\/p>\n

But, it’s not just about getting him at a steal. James could slide into the small or power forward positions, which are current needs<\/a>, and work alongside Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns<\/a>. That would be a dream trio. Also, his elite passing skills could take the pressure off Brunson.<\/p>\n

The Case Against LeBron James Joining the Knicks<\/h3>\n

There are also reasons for both James and the Knicks to run away from this idea. For one, the Knicks have a good thing going without the NBA legend. They have their stars. Their players have a tight bond. Adding a superstar like James could actually hurt the chemistry of this team and overshadow current standouts like Brunson.<\/p>\n

Brunson has become the Knicks’ leader and helped them win a championship. If they add LeBron and win another championship<\/a>, that fanfare could go to the veteran and disrupt the story of Brunson and the Knicks.<\/p>\n

Adding James, even at a discount, could also hurt the purse strings of the Knicks. The team could do a $2.45 million veteran minimum exception, according to ESPN\u2019s Bobby Marks<\/a>, and even though that’s a deal for James, it’s not nothing. So, funding could be another challenge.<\/p>\n

So, there are arguments for James to join and not join the Knicks. It would obviously make a huge statement for him to come and bring even more excitement to the franchise. However, the Knicks don’t need James, and he may be a better fit elsewhere.<\/p>\n
