With Robert Williams III‘s return to the Blazers, Portland’s big man rotation is improving. Williams’ impact might be the best out of any backup big, which is huge for Rip City.

Why Robert Williams III’s Blazers Return Is A Crucial Move

While the current Trail Blazers roster is quite guard-centric, Portland’s big men rotation is solid. They have four centers on the roster, but Donovan Clingan headlines them as the starter, and Williams as his backup. In terms of big man depth, that is one of the best center duos in the league.

Head coach Micah Nori might have his hands full with the rotations between Damian Lillard, Ja Morant, Scoot Henderson, and Jrue Holiday, but he does not have to worry about Portland’s big men. They have the depth they need, especially with Williams’ impact being evident back in the 2025-26 season. Nori is ready for the challenge, which will be exciting for Portland’s future.

Williams Making His Blazers Return Matters

When the offseason rolled around, a lot of Blazers fans were worried about Williams leaving the team. Both the Los Angeles Lakers and his old team, the Boston Celtics, showed interest in getting him. However, it seems Williams returned to the Blazers because he knows he will have a big role with the team.

They have also done well with handling his health, as he is often dealing with injuries. He does not play back-to-backs often, which is why the Blazers also scooped up Branden Carlson on a one-year deal.

Robert Williams III ‘25-26 defensive tape

3rd in blocks/4th in total rebounds per 100 possessions. What team needs him most? pic.twitter.com/Qj6cibiulC

— Role Player Performances (@BenchHighlights) June 26, 2026

Williams’ Blazers return ensures that Portland will always have a decent big man in there, which doubly matters because of how important the bigs are to their defense. The rest of the team is still quite decent on that end, especially with Holiday and Toumani Camara having momentous roles.

However, they needed stability in the paint, as they always need a rim protector present on the floor. With Clingan and Williams coming in for each other, the Blazers will always have a reliable center. Offensively, Williams will also do well as the premier lob threat, and he’s also a decent connective passer.

Williams’ Impact Will Be Felt Throughout The Team

Aside from being a backup big man, Williams has emerged as one of the team’s leaders. He has experience in high-pressure situations from his Celtics days, and will continue in that role with the Blazers.

Nori sees him as a valuable piece because he is an impressive athlete who makes the Blazers more dangerous on both ends of the floor. At the same time, he has all the intangibles that any coach would love to see from his team. The hustle, heart, and leadership are all on display in Williams’ impact.

pic.twitter.com/MrOkJQG8iZ

— basedketball (@basedketball95) June 22, 2026

Players like Lillard and Holiday will also love having Williams. The big man might not be the most vocal of players, but he always exudes that quiet confidence that is needed from a veteran center. Clingan is the franchise center, but he is still quite young, as he enters his third NBA season.

As long as the Blazers can balance the rotation, they have their centers to back them up. Whether it’s a game that fits Clingan more or Williams more, the Blazers have a two-headed beast at the center position. Nori will find it easier to scheme against teams, knowing that he has this kind of reliability.

Portland’s Big Men Will Need Support From Other Players

Williams, Clingan, Carlson, and Yang Hansen will serve as the primary rotation in the center position. Even though they are fantastic players, they might struggle throughout the season, especially defensively.

After the blockbuster trade, the Blazers are navigating a backcourt of Lillard and Morant, so their defensive workload will increase. The rest of the team must step up if they want to be more successful in the 2026-27 season. It is up to Nori to help Portland’s big men in that department by developing schemes that cover all their bases.

At the same time, general manager Joe Cronin and the front office still have time to make the right moves to boost the team. The power forward position is lacking in quality, so if they can get better players to improve the Blazers’ depth, they could pull off a stronger season than before.

Photo Credit: Jaime Valdez, Imagn Images via Reuters Connect

Amid all the big moves throughout the NBA, the Portland Trail Blazers are continuously building a solid team for themselves.
