The longtime assistant coach has earned his spot as the new Blazers coach. He will be the person in charge of Portland’s system as they try to navigate the Blazers’ future in the 2026-27 season.

How Micah Nori Impacts Trail Blazers’ System and Future

After being in the league since 2009 as an assistant coach, Nori finally has his big break after the Blazers’ extensive search. He has some experience with the role, as he filled in for the injured Chris Finch during the Minnesota Timberwolves’ 2024 postseason run.

For a long time, Nori has worked as one of the league’s top assistants. In fact, he has worked on staffs under some elite coaches like Finch and Michael Malone. Now, he will be in charge of Portland’s future, at least for the 2026-27 season, due to the unique terms of his contract: one guaranteed year plus two one-year options for the next two seasons.

Nori Is Committed To Being the Blazers Coach

Now that Nori is the Blazers’ head coach, he seems focused on doing a good job. General manager Joe Cronin and new team owner Tom Dundon were impressed, and it seems Nori is ready to step in.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to lead the Trail Blazers and want to thank Tom, Joe, and the Rip City Rising ownership group for their trust. From my conversations with Tom and Joe, it was evident that there is a strong commitment to building a culture that values accountability, development, and team success,” Nori said in the official Blazers press release.

Everyone: "How are the Wolves so good in the 3rd?"

Micah Nori at halftime: pic.twitter.com/XakJEJdD66

— BalloftheWild (The Artist fka /r/Timberwolves) (@BalloftheWild) December 19, 2023

For the longest time, the Blazers have had issues with their offense. Now that Nori is in charge, he will be taking care of that problem. He has been a veteran offensive coordinator for across multiple teams. Now leading the Blazers, he is the key to finally improving their offense, which was the team’s weak point this past season.

With Damian Lillard leading the charge, Nori can be much more imaginative with his sets. Having talented players like Deni Avdija, Scoot Henderson, and Shaedon Sharpe is also a big deal because more inventive offensive sets can unlock this team’s potential.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBgwmEWKm9" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072/2161;" ></smartframe-embed>

Portland’s System Needed a Revamp

After running with Chauncey Billups’ system for a few years, the Blazers are now in a new era with Nori. This past season, Splitter did not run much of his own sets because the team had a full training camp with Billups before the gambling probe that saw him relinquish his role as head coach.

Splitter got the Blazers into the playoffs, and they even got a win against the San Antonio Spurs. However, it was clear that Dundon and the front office were ready to look for coaching candidates, even during the postseason.

This is why the Timberwolves broadcast is GOAT'ed.

Look at this segment explaining the Dubs' "Gaggle" split action: pic.twitter.com/zfbiSnpdok

— Joe Viray (@JoeVirayNBA) November 13, 2023

With Nori in charge, there is a new system in place for the Blazers. This will likely take advantage of the talent on the roster. They have defensive phenoms with Donovan Clingan in the paint and Toumani Camara at the perimeter.

Since they already have a good foundation for defense, improving the offense is a priority for Portland. Nori can easily handle that. Portland’s future will rely on this offense, but it could get better if they diminish the shooting struggles that have plagued them over the past few years.

The Blazers’ Future Is Still Uncertain

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBCVj1BSLL" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5487px; aspect-ratio: 5487/3658;" ></smartframe-embed>

Even with a new Blazers coach, it seems there is still uncertainty in Portland. Nori’s contract is unique, as it feels like a “prove it” deal more than anything. If he impresses, the Blazers can pick up the team option for the second year, and they can do it again with the third.

At the same time, Portland is also active in the trade market. The Blazers may have some new players come training camp because of trade rumors floating around.

There are good fits around the league, including Trey Murphy III, who could be a good fit with the Blazers. The same can be said about superstar Jaylen Brown, who can significantly elevate Portland’s future.

While Nori getting hired is a great development for the Blazers, some fans are still unsure about what to make of their team. However, it is fair to be optimistic about their chances now that they have a good head coach at the helm.

© Jesse Johnson-Imagn Images

After weeks of speculation, the Portland Trail Blazers have found their new head coach in Micah Nori.
