He emphasized that he was “locked in” on encouraging his teammates and getting back on the court.

“He can have any conversation he wants about it. At the end of the day, I don’t work for my agent; my agent works for me. And there’s going to be conversations that are going to be made between him and the Bucks, and him and his other players, and him and other teams and other GMs, executives around the league.

Antetokounmpo’s relationship with the Bucks’ front office deteriorated notably over the past few months, as Milwaukee did not clear the Greek superstar to play, despite his claims of being healthy.

In addition, Bucks co-owner Wes Edens confirmed earlier this year that the Bucks would face an ultimatum this off-season. As Antetokounmpo entered the final year of his contract, the Bucks would be forced to extend him or trade him, as it would not benefit the team to let the superstar walk for nothing.

However, with Antetokounmpo traded to the Miami Heat, what are the details surrounding the trade? And how does it impact the Heat?

A Blockbuster Transaction

The Bucks receive guards Tyler Herro and Kasparas Jakučionis, forward Jaime Jaquez Jr, and center Kel’el Ware. They also receive three first-round picks (2026, 2031, 2033), a 2030 first-round pick swap, and a 2033 second-round pick.

The Heat receives big man Bobby Portis, as well as Antetokounmpo. There is potential for this deal to expand and include other players, as it can only be finalized on July 6th.

Concerns Surrounding Antetokounmpo?

Despite being a top-tier player that many teams would like to have, several concerns shroud the Greek superstar. Despite being a two-time MVP and a former DPOY, Antetokounmpo has largely been injured for the past few seasons. Antetokounmpo has played in just 20 playoff games since 2022.

Additionally, the Bucks have not advanced past the second round since their championship in 2021. While some of this can be attributed to the Bucks’ inability to build a solid roster around him, Antetokounmpo’s injuries late in the season have often derailed the Bucks’ playoff hopes.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBPLaV7Cfy" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2400px; aspect-ratio: 2400/1350;" ></smartframe-embed>

Fit, Signings, And Roster

As it stands now, a potential starting five for the Heat will include Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins, Norman Powell, and Davion Mitchell. While Powell is a free agent, Mitchell is a defensive guard with a somewhat limited offensive skill set. Additionally, Antetokounmpo’s fit with Adebayo is something Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra must figure out before the season begins. With both of them doing most of their work closer to the basket, the Heat should prioritize signing or trading for good shooters to pair with their twin towers. However, both of them are more than adequate to anchor their interior defense, which will be rock solid with two of the best defensive big men in the NBA.

Aside from beginning their search for good shooters and playmakers, the Heat must make signing Powell a priority. Powell was the team’s leading scorer over the past season and a half and was acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers in 2025. He averaged 21.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists. He will serve well as a secondary or tertiary scorer for the Heat, alongside the one-two punch that is Adebayo and Antetokounmpo. The Heat have his Bird Rights, which allow them to exceed the cap to sign him. A short-term deal would be ideal for the Heat, given that Powell is 33 and dealt with multiple injuries this past season.

The Heat will likely be interested in bringing back Wiggins. The veteran forward may opt in to his player option or opt out and sign with the team later. It would be ideal for Miami to retain him, as he is a versatile player on both offense and defense, despite his underwhelming performance of late.

Does This Trade Make The Heat Contenders?

Despite adding a two-time MVP, the Heat have several roster issues to address before they can be seen as true contenders. Losing their depth in this trade will hurt them badly in the long run. It will be vital for Miami to sign some good players for cheap this offseason to ensure that they will be ready to contend this coming season.

Potential candidates include unrestricted free agents Coby White, Anfernee Simons, Tim Hardaway Jr., Tobias Harris, and Kelly Oubre, amongst others. Not only will such signings give them good shooters and playmakers, but they will also give the Heat a solid supporting cast alongside Powell and Wiggins, whom they will try to bring back.

While Antetokounmpo might be the star that the Heat have been looking to add to their team, the trade for him has left a hole in their roster. And if they truly want to be contenders, the Heat will have to find a way to put together a solid roster despite cap constraints.

Jeff Hanisch, Imagn Images via Reuters Connect

Despite years of rumors and speculation surrounding the Milwaukee Bucks‘ homegrown superstar, Giannis Antetokounmpo has denied the notion of him being traded from Cream City.
