The trade of Antetokounmpo brings a slow and disappointing conclusion to arguably the greatest era of Bucks basketball.

“The trade does not include any additional teams — it is a one-to-one move, sources said — but both the Heat and the Bucks will execute the deal July 6, which leaves the framework open to see whether there are opportunities to expand,” ESPN’s Shams Charania said. “Last June, the Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets agreed to a deal that ultimately increased to a historic seven-team trade.”

Antetokounmpo spent 13 seasons in Milwaukee and is unquestionably the greatest Buck in franchise history. The Greek Freak, who lasted until the 15th pick in the 2013 draft, led the Bucks to 10 playoff berths and, more significantly, an NBA title in 2021 — 50 years after their initial crown. During his tenure, the 31-year-old forward earned several NBA honors,s including being a two-time MVP, Finals MVP, and Defensive Player of the Year.

FWIW: Giannis Antetokounmpo is the first multi-time MVP winner traded away since Moses Malone.

— HoopsHype (@hoopshype) June 23, 2026

Since the start of the 2013-14 campaign, the Bucks have posted the eighth-best winning percentage at .575. Granted, the Heat did have to give up their young core and are only left with four first-round selections and one second-round pick from 2027 to 2033.

Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo will now be the face of the franchise for the foreseeable future. But the trade leaves the Heat with four or five open roster spots and some forthcoming decisions. Andrew Wiggins has a $30 million player option, which he will surely exercise, that he needs to decide by June 29.

Wiggins may decide to decline the option and work out a multi-year deal. Jahmir Young ($2.4 million) and Pelle Larsson($2.29 million) have club options. Larsson showed improvement in year two and will definitely return, though Young’s status is up in the air.

Let’s assume Wiggins opts in, and Young is also retained. That would mean the Heat’s player obligations would be about $191.93 million for the 10 players. So, not only did the trade cost the Heat most of the rest of their future assets, but it also increased their payroll by about $36 million. While the Heat traded away their first-round pick this year, they do still have their second-round selection.

The $191.93 million payroll would put Miami $9 million below the luxury tax threshold. More importantly, per ESPN’s Bobby Marks, it means the Heat won’t be able to afford to keep unrestricted free agent Norm Powell, who is likely to receive a huge payday after producing a career season. The Heat would also be about $17 million below the first apron, where they will be hardcapped when the trade goes through.

“Miami now becomes hard-capped at the first apron,” Marks said on SportsCenter early this morning. “They’re limited as far as what they can go out and offer Norman Powell and the deal. And when you look at their backcourt, their backcourt is a little bit depleted here. They need a little bit more front court help.”

With Powell unlikely to return, Miami’s biggest need will be shooting. And NBA Marc Stein believes that the Heat could dangle Nikola Jovic in a trade to help accomplish the feat.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBA4iDuMZr" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072/2048;" ></smartframe-embed>

What Does Trading Away Giannis Antetokounmpo Mean For the Bucks?

It means an end to an era. But Antetokounmpo put the Bucks in a no-win situation as he wasn’t going to re-sign with the organization, per Charania via the Pat McAfee Show.

“Giannis Antetokounmpo wasn’t gonna sign a contract extension in Milwaukee and he wanted out..

The Bucks were open for business and they’re moving forward after making this trade with the Miami Heat” ~ @ShamsCharania #PMSLive https://t.co/vxUmZkVeuf pic.twitter.com/UbnV2rNiWR

— Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) June 23, 2026

Milwaukkee currently has 15 players under contract, including the four incoming players. Gary Harris opted into his $3.8 million player option on Tuesday, though Kevin Porter Jr. ($5.3 million), Gary Trent Jr. ($3.8 million), and Jericho Sims ($2.8 million) still have upcoming decisions. Pete Nance ($2.49 million) has a nonguaranteed deal, and Andre Jackson Jr. ($2.4 million) has a club option, which won’t be exercised.

The Bucks own the No. 10 and No. 13 in today’s draft. The Bucks only have eight future selections (2027-2033), including six first-rounders.

Let’s assume all players with player options exercise them, and Nance and Jackson are shown the door. The Bucks’ obligations — including dead money and their two first-round picks — would be about $156 million or $9 million in cap space.

Herro is on a $33 million expiring contract, and while the Bucks value the Wisconsin native, they are fielding offers for the 26-year-old guard, per NBA Insider Jake Fischer. Fisher added that the Bucks don’t have any interest in trading Ware or Jakucionas.

I do believe Milwaukee has tried to package Nos. 10 and 13 to move up in tonight’s first round, but I don’t believe there’s going to be any trades in the top-10.

Sources say the Bucks, at this point, plan to keep Kel’el Ware, despite interest from rival teams like the Lakers.… https://t.co/0byAImAiox

— Jake Fischer (@JakeLFischer) June 23, 2026

Besides Herro, Myles Turner and Kyle Kuzma are other potential trade candidates.

Photo Credit: Sam Navarro, Imagn Images via Reuters Connect

The Giannis Antetokounmpo saga is finally over for the Milwaukee Bucks.
