And it isn’t likely to stop anytime soon. While the Knicks are enjoying their parade today, they have some important business to tend to, starting with next week’s draft.

Knicks Need to Hit on Their 2026 Draft Picks

The Knicks own three draft picks in the 2026 draft. It is the third time in the last five seasons that the Knicks have owned three or more draft picks and the fourth occasion in the last eight. However, the Knicks haven’t had much success in the draft, so they need to hit on their trio of picks.

Since the 2018 draft, New York has held 17 draft picks. Mitchell Robinson, who was the No. 36 pick in 2018, and 2024 first-round pick Pacôme Dadiet are the only players who remain on the team. Speaking of Dadiet, he was always known as a long-term prospect, but he has only appeared in 47 games over the last two seasons as he has struggled mightily to shoot the ball. While Dadiet has shown signs of development in the G-League, the Knicks had the opportunity to draft Baylor Scheierman, Isaiah Collier, Ryan Dunn, Jonathan Mogbo or Kyle Fillipowski instead of the 20-year-old Frenchman.

Dadiet isn’t the only draft pick the Knicks have missed on over this stretch. The Knicks also missed on Trevor Keels and Kevin Knox. More significantly, the Knicks have traded away 10 of their draft picks on draft night — Ajay Mitchell and Kyshawn George — and didn’t receive anything of substance in return. On the plus side, they did flip former first-round selection RJ Barrett, in a package deal, for OG Anunoby.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBAHixqLxE" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2000px; aspect-ratio: 2000/1334;" ></smartframe-embed>

Why Is the Knicks’ 2026 NBA Draft Important?

New York is coming off its first NBA championship since 1973. But the Knicks have a lot of roster work to do to put themselves in a position to repeat.

The Knicks have nine players under contract with a salary cap hit of $205.4 million. Jose Alvarado has a $4.5 million option, and his decision will play a significant role in the Knicks’ plans this offseason. If Alvardo opts in, it leaves the Knicks $3.5 million below the first apron and $16.5 million under the second apron.

Alvarado was a big addition at the trade deadline as the 28-year-old increased the Knicks’ depth at guard. Alvarado played an important role for the Knicks off the bench during the regular season and playoffs, taking over backup point guard duties when Miles McBride was injured or ineffective. The 6-foot point is key to the Knicks bench as he brings defensive pressure, pace disruption, and energy.

“If Alvarado opts in, the Knicks get a useful guard at a clean number and can focus their larger money decisions elsewhere,” Alexander Wilson of Empire Sports said about Alvarado’s decision. “If he opts out, Leon Rose has another bench slot to solve while already trying to keep the title group together.”

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB5aqTIK8z" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2000px; aspect-ratio: 2000/1334;" ></smartframe-embed>

Knicks Free Agent Decisions

Mitchell Robinson and Landry Shamet are the Knicks’ top free agents. The problem for the Knicks is that both players are in line for a slight pay raise. Robinson is expected to garner plenty of attention this summer on the open market.

Robinson made $12.9 million this past season and is projected to receive between $13 and $15 million this year as part of a multi-year deal. Meanwhile, Shamet is coming off a career season and came up big several times for the Knicks in the playoffs. Shamet made $2.29 million this past season and is projected to make between $3 and $4 million this upcoming campaign.

If Alvardo opts in and Robinson and Shamet re-sign, it will likely put the Knicks at or over the second apron with at least two open roster spots. Jordan Clarkson and Jeremy Sochan are also unrestricted free agents. Meanwhile, Mo Diawara and Ariel Hukporti will be restricted free agents if they are offered a QO. The Knicks own the No. 24, No. 31 and No. 55 picks.

Don’t expect the Knicks to go over the second apron. While the Knicks could start the season over the second apron, it would not be ideal as it would limit their ability to make moves during the season. Also, the owner, James Dolan, wants them to avoid that realm.

“There’s certain things in the NBA that you’d have to be suicidal to do,” Dolan said on the CartonShow on WFAN yesterday. “One of them is the second apron. Alvarado and Robinson’s decisions will dictate what the Knicks will do the rest of the summer. But given Dolan’s feelings about not wanting to go over the second apron, it feels that Robinson won’t likely return.

Regardless of the upcoming decisions, the Knicks will need to add depth to the frontcourt and backcourt. Let’s assume Robinson walks and Alvarado and Shamet return. That should give the Knicks about $13 million of wiggle room with three spots to fill, as they don’t project to fill out all 15 spots to start the season.

With Robinson not on the squad, the Knicks will need to add a veteran backup. The Knicks could pursue Andre Drummond, Nick Richards, or maybe be able to entice Brooklyn to trade Day’Ron Sharpe — if his club option isn’t declined, which is unlikely — or New Orleans to deal Yves Missi for the No. 24 pick and a 2027 second-round pick.

Perhaps, instead of using the No. 24 pick, maybe the Knicks could package Diadet with the No. 31 pick this year as well as a 2027 selection for either Sharpe or Missi. Trading for Missi seems the most realistic trade possibility.

The Knicks have been linked to Allen Graves, Koa Peat, and Joshua Jefferson with the 24th pick. Of the three players, Jefferson makes the most sense as a plug-and-play. But he isn’t a great fit for the Knicks.

Another option for the Knicks here is trading down a couple of slots and still keeping a first-round pick, adding a future second-round selection as well.

Or trade out of the first round altogether for a high-second-round pick or two this year and a future first-round pick. San Antonio (No. 32, 42, 44), Brooklyn (No. 33, No. 43), and Sacramento (No. 34, No. 45) have multiple second-round selections this year.

Why would the Knicks trade down? By doing so, the Knicks could save cap space this year and increase their draft capital. Over the next six drafts, the Knicks only have three future first-round selections (2028, 2030, 2032) and as many as five second-round picks.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB8PFB3nLF" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3744px; aspect-ratio: 3744/2496;" ></smartframe-embed>

Knicks 2026 Draft Targets: Sharpshooting Forward and 2 Local Products?

The Knicks’ priority in the draft should be shooting, a combo big, a big combo guard who can handle the ball, and a 3-and-D wing. He averages 1.9 threes for his career with shooting splits of 46.8/37.4/84.4.

Mitchell is a potential second-round pick with the likelihood of receiving a two-way deal. Mitchell is an athletic, defensive-oriented forward with a high motor and high vertical pop. He is also a good passer, though shooting is a major concern.

Mitchell is not the only Johnie who has worked out for the Knicks. Six-foot-9 forward Zuby Ejiofor, who is projected to go late first-to-early second in the draft, also had an individual meeting with the team. While smaller than Robinson, Ejiofor would be the ideal replacement due to his elite defensive versatility, physicality, and offensive feel.

Last Word

So, yes, it is imperative that the Knicks hit a home run with this draft. Now, this home run doesn’t mean they have to select three players, as a trade could be even more important, as long as it fits their needs. Ejiofor and Karaban would be excellent fits for the Knicks if they are available. While Mitchell is a long-term product, he figures to be a good fit as well.

Brad Penner, Imagn Images via Reuters

The shine is still illuminating brightly around the New York Knicks and their 2026 NBA championship.
