So far, Morez Johnson Jr. seems to be the best pick that the Thunder should get as a replacement for Luguentz Dort if they let him walk this offseason. It may be a long shot, but nothing looks to be impossible with Sam Presti and his trade history.

Dort has been one of the core players in the Thunder roster. OKC has been very patient with his development, turning him into one of the best three-and-D players at one point. However, with Dort’s value slowly depreciating, it seems that drafting Johnson Jr. may be in their best interest.

Morez Johnson Jr. Is A Perfect Lu Dort Replacement

As far as the Thunder are concerned, next year is a must-win for them. Bowing to the San Antonio Spurs in seven games was not part of the plan when they reached the Western Conference Finals. However, Dort’s sudden struggles on both ends of the floor have got OKC fans thinking that they may be able to find a replacement for him when he moves on from the team.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBo2MNyHGk" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072/2048;" ></smartframe-embed>

Johnson Jr.’s Two-Way Game Fits With OKC

Oklahoma City takes pride in finding talent that can play both ends of the floor. Dort was one of those notable players who made his name known as a reliable two-way, three-and-D player, and has become a prominent icon as the defensive “Dorture Chamber” in his time with the Thunder. However, then again, Johnson Jr. has shown flashes that he can potentially offer the same level of play.

A national champion with the Michigan Wolverines, Johnson Jr. is a much bigger player than Dort, who stands at six-foot-four but offers massive bulk for his size. Dort can stay in front of star players and was definitely a deadly shooter from deep whenever he had the hot hand. So far, the Michigan forward is capable of those as well, being a six-foot-nine rebounding machine who can score and defend. It seems that OKC could use his services moving forward.

“I was fortunate we're watching the combine… and Sam Presti was sitting just a couple of seats away. His eyes were locked in on this guy: Morez Johnson Jr.” – @SeanFarnham pic.twitter.com/gqdlRehcdn

— NBA Base (@TheNBABase) June 17, 2026

Imagine having a taller, more agile, and much more consistent version of Dort. For what it’s worth, the Dorture Chamber is already a nightmare for many players. Johnson Jr. being added to the already defensive Thunder squad can be a scary one in the long run. The only upside here is that the Wolverines product has a strong offensive game, adding depth to OKC once more.

Cheaper Contract Wins For The Thunder

Oklahoma City is heading well beneath the second apron at this point as the extensions for Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren start to kick in. With that, Dort’s extension may well be a huge talking point for their future. As cautious as Presti has been in managing his assets, Dort will not walk from OKC without them getting something in return.

Morez Johnson Jr has NBA Champion written all over him 🏆 pic.twitter.com/A8EABb6lFN

— ItsAllLove (@nbanerdd) June 12, 2026

Johnson Jr. has shown that he has the potential to replace Dort’s role within the team. The Thunder guard is coming into the final year of his five-year, $82.5 million deal with the team, and he is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. As OKC leans toward not letting Dort walk, at least without proper compensation, it may seem that drafting a talent like Johnson Jr. may be one of their best moves to consider this summer.

Will OKC Gamble Lu Dort’s Future With Morez Johnson Jr.?

At this point, it’s hard to predict whether or not the Thunder would opt to draft Johnson Jr. and move on from Dort. The recent draft selections from OKC haven’t actually blossomed into promising talents just yet, with both Thomas Sorber and Nikola Topic yet to bring a big game coming off their injuries. For OKC to consider replacing Dort with Johnson Jr. is a long shot — at least until you see them trade up for him, or bring him in with the 12th or 17th pick at most.

Johnson Jr. does show high potential for Oklahoma City, and his upside is definitely impressive for the team. However, that isn’t enough of a promise for the team to actually decide to jump ship from Dort and see how they fare in the next season.

Featured Image: Bob Donnan-Imagn Images

With the Aday Mara buzz going around for OKC, it seems that it’s worth looking into their other options at this point.
