Time and time again, rebounding seemed to be a huge issue for the Thunder, and they’ve got plenty of time to fix that. Aday Mara seems to be a buzzing name for this year’s Draft, and he may be the gem that Oklahoma City needs to elevate its game.

Aday Mara Solves OKC’s Frontcourt Problems

So much has been said about how the Thunder are nearly a piece away from becoming a dynasty in the NBA. Make no mistake, they earned their chip in 2025, but not without hiccups along the way. Not everything can be solved through Sam Presti’s magnificent trades, but drafting notable players seems to be their good edge as well.

For what it’s worth, Mara seems to be one of the most reasonable picks for the Thunder, albeit at a price of a few assets. He does seem capable of complementing Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein on paper, but his game may be something that will help them win it all once more.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBBcit7Gv8" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6307px; aspect-ratio: 6307/4205;" ></smartframe-embed>

Mara Can Play on Both Ends of the Floor

If there’s one thing to know about OKC, it’s that they prioritize a player’s ability to play on both ends of the floor. That’s why they traded Josh Giddey for Alex Caruso back then, and everyone knows how much of a beast the Bald Mamba is on both ends. Mara fits that label well. He helped the Michigan Wolverines win the national championship and was even named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

aday mara defends near the level of the screen in drop, instantly reacts to the pass and times up an off-hand block. abnormal defender pic.twitter.com/3Mn6Zp7hxf

— Ben Pfeifer (@bjpf_) June 14, 2026

But what’s good is that he also averaged 12.1 points on 66.8% shooting, to go along with 6.8 boards and 2.6 blocks. Had he not moved to Michigan, Mara would have remained a reserve at UCLA and would not have discovered his immense potential. So what does this mean for OKC?

We’ve all seen how Holmgren struggled hard in the Western Conference Finals, and IHart wasn’t just enough of a scorer to put against Victor Wembanyama all the time. This is where Mara comes in. He’s a capable shot creator who also knows how to move faster in the paint — actually quicker than Cheddar does. Adding him gives Holmgren more flexibility in his spot, while also giving Mara the leverage to play his length.

Mara’s Size is a Huge Need for the Thunder

Speaking of length, Mara is a hulking dunk machine at 7-foot-3, which is quite enough to rival Wemby at this point. With Thomas Sorber being likely a reserve power forward who can take over Jaylin Williams‘ minutes when needed, the double big scheme for OKC isn’t really much of a big threat if they can’t take on the tallest player in the NBA right now.

If Aday Mara falls to OKC at 12 I’m on board!

No one would score on him and Chet!#Thunderup pic.twitter.com/6YgsacpBzJ

— ΑDH ⚡️ OKC (@UknowADH) June 11, 2026

Considering how Wembanyama’s length exploited the Thunder’s defense, Mara offers a great solution and a scoring punch with his size and strength. Holmgren is staying with OKC, and his game centers on being more of a defender than an offensive scorer, but Mara’s presence should also allow him to space the floor even better, making it easier for him to score at will.

OKC May Have to Move Up for Mara

By now, fans and experts should know that Mara’s stock is high enough to be on the lottery. However, chances are, Mara may get drafted long before OKC is on the clock at No. 12. That being said, the Thunder are in prime position — more than anyone else in the league — to make a very enticing trade to move up in the draft order.

Aday Mara has been the most commonly linked player to the Thunder & I’m not sure how I feel

I don’t love overconsidering fit, but drafting Mara does feel like you’re anchoring Chet as a 4 long-term, I’m fine with OKC drafting another big but I don’t want that to come with the…

— Gur Singh (@HoopFocusX) June 16, 2026

Expect some key packages in that regard. ESPN’s latest mock draft puts Mara at No. 11 with the Golden State Warriors, which is just slightly out of reach for them. That being said, the Thunder holds the No. 12 and No. 17 picks, quite a valuable deal for moving up if Mara is truly worth the gamble. The worst-case scenario here is that they may have to let go of some of their expiring players if they really want to capture the Wolverines product.

Photo Credit: USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

If there’s one thing that proved to be a big problem for OKC, it’s their frontcourt.
