While the future of their big three remains in limbo, new reporting indicates the team is interested in retaining two key role players around them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Report Hints at Lakers\u2019 Stance on 2 Key Free Agents<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a Monday morning story outlining the unanswered questions around <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 future, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7359073\/2026\/06\/15\/lebron-james-nba-free-agency-questions-lakers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Athletic\u2019s Dan Woike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealed the Lakers\u2019 internal beliefs about <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rui Hachimura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hayesja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaxson Hayes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The belief is that Rui Hachimura and Jaxson Hayes are players the Lakers would prioritize bringing back as they try to best fit a roster around Don\u010di\u0107. And each piece of the puzzle the Lakers feel they need to add into their cap space takes up a slice that could go to James.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Rui Hachimura<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2026\/05\/13\/rui-hachimura-lakers\/\" target=\"_self\">Hachimura<\/a> is coming off his fourth year with the Lakers after the best postseason of his career\u2014one in which he shot the lights out from distance to rewrite the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leaders\/fg3_pct_career_p.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">playoff history books<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His red-hot scoring came amid dire straits for the purple and gold, who largely navigated the playoffs without <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luka Doncic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and\u2014up until Game 5 against the Houston Rockets\u2014<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In ten playoff games, Hachimura boasted a career-best 17.5 points per game while shooting 54.9% from the field, 56.9% from deep and 72.9% from the free-throw line. That production built on his regular-season success, where in 68 games (41 starts), he put up 11.5 points and 3.3 rebounds on .514\/.443\/.694 splits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: 800px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBBRwd2jGa\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4488px; aspect-ratio: 4488\/2992;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although he shifted to a reserve role midway through the season, it didn\u2019t diminish his effectiveness as a scorer, which proved vital for a second unit that could barely throw a pea in the ocean. From opening night last October to mid-January of this year, the team\u2019s bench ranked <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/teams\/traditional?DateFrom=10\/21\/2025&amp;DateTo=01\/12\/2026&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;StarterBench=Bench&amp;amp;SeasonType=Playoffs&amp;amp;dir=-1&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=PTS\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dead last in scoring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (25.1 PPG) on 46.1% shooting from the field. Since Hachimura\u2019s move to the bench on Jan. 13, the Lakers\u2019 second unit gradually improved to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/teams\/traditional?DateFrom=01\/13\/2026&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;StarterBench=Bench&amp;amp;SeasonType=Playoffs&amp;amp;dir=-1&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=PTS\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27th in points per game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (32.6) while shooting a respectable 50.9% from the field and 37.4% from three.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the acquisition of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kennalu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luke Kennard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clearly helped, Hachimura did his part as well. In 26 games off the bench in that span, he averaged a modest 8.7 points per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 39.6% from deep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6998028\/2026\/01\/26\/hachimura-lakers-bench-role-reaves-lebron-doncic\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hachimura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s efficiency with the second unit and his playoff breakout in a time of need, it\u2019s no wonder why the Lakers may look to keep him around. If the 28-year-old is still willing to serve as LA\u2019s sixth man, there\u2019s no reason to deny him that opportunity, giving the Lakers their desired continuity in a player who fits their culture and playing style.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Jaxson Hayes<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From highlight-reel slams to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/lakers\/comments\/1pxxlbx\/jaxson_hayes_202526_interior_defense_grades\/#lightbox\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improved defensive effort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2026\/03\/06\/jaxson-hayes-resurgence-perfect-time-for-lakers\/\" target=\"_self\">Jaxson Hayes<\/a> was solid as the Lakers\u2019 backup five. In a time where the position reeks of uncertainty, it may be worth keeping the 26-year-old as the second- or third-string center next season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 66 games (nine starts), Hayes averaged 7.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.8 blocks. He also shot a career-high 75.6% from the field and even went a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/lakers-analysis\/118553\/lakers-season-review-jaxson-hayes-luka-doncic\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hayes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> proved his worth as a valuable lob threat out of the pick-and-roll, enhancing his chemistry with Doncic and Reaves while steadying the ship amid <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aytonde01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deandre Ayton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s rollercoaster campaign. While foul trouble continued to plague him defensively (1.9 per game in the regular season, 2.7 in the playoffs), <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/lakers-analysis\/110596\/jaxson-hayes-lakers-film-room-breakdown-defense\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hayes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also showed more discipline on that end of the floor and helped Ayton shut down <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sengual01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alperen Sengun<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in LA\u2019s first-round series against Houston.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 26-year-old is up for his third contract with the Lakers this summer, and he\u2019s done enough to earn it with his consistent growth and energizing play.
