Now they face another important offseason decision, but this one is different. Before Minnesota decides whether to chase another blockbuster trade or reshape its veteran core, it first has to determine how much of its future belongs to Ayo Dosunmu. That choice could influence every major move that follows.

Why Ayo Dosunmu Is Minnesota’s Ultimate Offseason Priority

Minnesota Needs Dosunmu to Stay

Minnesota enters the summer with a roster that remains competitive but carries far less flexibility than most contenders. Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert, Julius Randle and Jaden McDaniels are already under contract, while several future draft obligations continue to limit the front office’s ability to build through trades. That reality makes Dosunmu more important than a typical free agent.

When Minnesota acquired the guard from Chicago before the trade deadline, the move looked like a short-term effort to strengthen the bench. Instead, Dosunmu quickly became one of the roster’s most reliable two-way contributors.

He averaged 14.4 points while shooting 52.1% from the field and 41.4% from 3-point range in 24 games after the trade. His production gave Minnesota another creator alongside Edwards and added the stability the backcourt needed.

Donte Divincenzo’s Injury Changed the Equation

The Timberwolves were built around continuity. They used fewer starting lineups than any other team during the regular season and leaned heavily on a core group that understood its role.

That plan changed when Donte DiVincenzo suffered a torn Achilles during the playoffs, creating uncertainty around one of Minnesota’s most important perimeter players. Suddenly, Dosunmu was no longer simply valuable depth. He became a potential long-term starter.

Minnesota’s need for another ball-handler already existed before the injury. The roster lacks a true reserve lead guard, and veteran Mike Conley is also entering free agency. Replacing both players externally would be difficult given the team’s financial position and limited trade assets.

Keeping Dosunmu and not letting him walk solves part of that problem immediately.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBNoqPgbhL" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072/2049;" ></smartframe-embed>

Why the Front Office Cannot Afford Another Loss

Last offseason, Minnesota made difficult financial decisions while trying to maintain a championship-caliber roster.

Those choices eventually led to the departure of Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who later became one of the league’s most improved players. Losing another productive guard entering his prime would create a similar problem.

Dosunmu is only 26 years old. He fits Edwards’ timeline, can play on or off the ball, and has already shown he can thrive in head coach Chris Finch’s system. Most importantly, Minnesota controls the process.

Because the Timberwolves acquired Dosunmu’s Bird rights in the trade, they can exceed the salary cap to retain him. The organization can also negotiate an extension before free agency begins. That flexibility is rare for a team operating so close to the luxury tax.

The Giannis Question Comes After Ayo Dosunmu

Much of the offseason discussion around Minnesota centers on a possible pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo. The interest is understandable. President Tim Connelly has never been afraid to make franchise-altering moves, and previous reports have linked Minnesota to discussions around Antetokounmpo.

However, a trade of that magnitude becomes far more complicated if the Timberwolves create another hole in the backcourt.

A roster built around Edwards and Antetokounmpo would still need perimeter defense, secondary playmaking and reliable shooting. Dosunmu provides all three. That makes his situation less about retaining a useful rotation player and more about preserving roster balance before exploring larger opportunities.

Minnesota already has limited draft capital available for future trades. Losing a productive contributor and then searching for a replacement would only create another problem to solve.

A Decision That Reveals Minnesota’s Priorities

The Timberwolves can spend the next several weeks exploring blockbuster possibilities and evaluating major roster changes. But the first decision may also be the easiest.

Dosunmu has already shown he can contribute to winning basketball. He fits the age profile of the franchise’s core players and fills a position of need that became even more important after DiVincenzo’s injury.

For a front office searching for ways to maximize the Edwards era, retaining proven production may be just as valuable as pursuing the next headline move.

Minnesota’s biggest offseason story may not be whether it can acquire another star. It may be whether it recognizes that one of its most important pieces is already on the roster.

© Jesse Johnson-Imagn Images

The Minnesota Timberwolves spent the last two years proving they can survive major roster changes.
