After developing into one of the Lakers’ most important players, Reaves is expected to attract major interest in the open market, with the Nets prepared to offer him a four-year max contract.

For the Nets, the appeal is obvious: Reaves is a proven scorer and secondary creator who can help accelerate their rebuild. Despite this, the question is whether it would be wise to pay Reaves like a franchise cornerstone, or whether Brooklyn would be making a costly mistake — handing max money to a player who’s more of a high-level complementary piece.

Should the Brooklyn Nets Offer Austin Reaves a Max Contract?

Why It Makes Sense for the Nets

Reaves makes sense for the Brooklyn Nets because he has already proven he is a high-level NBA player. His performances throughout the season highlighted his value, especially during stretches when LeBron James and Luka Doncic were injured. In those moments, Reaves stepped up, took on more responsibility, and helped keep the Lakers steady instead of allowing their season to fall apart. He can score the ball at a high level, create for others, and has also shown flashes of defensive impact when fully engaged. For Brooklyn, that type of player matters because the Nets currently don’t have a true number one option or a young piece who clearly projects as a future franchise star.

Furthermore, with the implementation of the new draft lottery system, the Brooklyn Nets cannot simply rely on being one of the worst teams in the league and being rewarded with a top draft pick. The goal now becomes to win as many games as possible and remain outside the bottom three teams in the NBA. Pairing Reaves with Michael Porter Jr. would immediately give the Nets more offensive firepower, help them win more games, and move them away from the bottom of the standings. For a franchise trying to find direction, Reaves would at least give Brooklyn a building block to help make them competitive again.

The Risk With Paying Reaves

The concern for Brooklyn is that paying Reaves this much money would mean treating him like a number one option before he has truly proven he can be one.

Although his numbers and impact with the Lakers have been impressive, they have come in a much different role than the one he would likely have with the Nets. Playing next to Doncic and James naturally means defenses are not always built around stopping Reaves first. In Brooklyn, that would change.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBkJGcrlWW" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4887px; aspect-ratio: 4887/3258;" ></smartframe-embed>

The question becomes whether Reaves is capable of stepping into a larger offensive role, facing more defensive attention, and still being efficient. This is part of a wider trend around the league, where teams are increasingly paying players based on what they could become rather than what they have already shown consistently.

That is dangerous because in a few years, Brooklyn could be looking at this contract as a drastic overpay. If Reaves does not develop into a true lead option, the Nets could be stuck with a player whose value no longer matches his salary, making the contract extremely difficult to move in a trade.

In addition, the Nets drafted three guards in the first round last year. They also possess the sixth pick this year, and the projected prospects in this section of the draft are mostly guards. With highly touted prospects such as Darius Acuff Jr and Mikel Brown available, the Nets must ask themselves whether taking a swing for Reaves is really necessary. At the same time, the combination of Reaves and the Nets’ sixth overall pick seems like a promising backcourt and turning point in their rebuild.

The Last Word

Overall, the Nets should attempt to pursue Reaves, but they should also be wary about treating him like a franchise guard. The NBA has reached a stage where winning has become incredibly important during a rebuild. Reaves’ offensive firepower gives the team a legitimate long-term guard who can help facilitate these victories. However, a max contract only makes sense if the Nets believe his Lakers production can scale into a bigger role.

© William Liang-Imagn Images

Austin Reaves is one of the more premier players potentially available this offseason, and the Brooklyn Nets are reportedly interested in making him part of their long-term core.
