The Knicks are one game away from an NBA title, and the Spurs have one last chance to earn a lifeline.

Game 5 takes place in San Antonio, and if New York pulls off a victory, they’ll be 4-1 and win the 2026 NBA Title. If the Spurs win on home turf, they’ll keep their NBA Title hopes alive and push the Finals to a Game 6.

So, what does New York have to do to finish off the Spurs sooner rather than later? It certainly can be done. The Knicks have bounced back before.

3 Things The Knicks Must Do To Finish Off The Spurs In Game 5

New York Must Start Strong

Anyone who watched Game 4 of the Knicks vs. Spurs series on Wednesday, June 10th, knows that it looked like a San Antonio blowout for much of the game. At one point, New York was trailing by 29 points. However, they didn’t give up, even when some of their fans did, and powered through to score the biggest comeback in NBA history, with a razor-thin 107-106 win.

Sure, it made for an exciting watch. However, it is a lot to ask for the Knicks to make another historic comeback when they’re on enemy soil. New York has to start strong in order to beat the Spurs, with a passionate San Antonio crowd doing everything in their power to keep these Finals going.

OG Anunoby And Jalen Brunson Has To Be At The Top Of Their Game

People can’t get enough of Jalen Brunson, and he’s no doubt a huge part of this team’s success. However, OG Anunoby has been an anchor in this series for New York and is one of the players who, in a way, stealing the spotlight. Anunoby is the one who scored the game-winning tip-in with 1.2 seconds left in Game 4 to take the series to 3-1. Over the past four games, Anunoby has averaged 23.5 points on 58% from the field, according to NBA stats, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks.

All of the stars on New York’s roster have to play tight and smart ball on Saturday, but the responsibility is especially on Anunoby’s shoulders. He can handle it.

Brunson also has to deliver. He’s had a strong showing in the NBA Finals, but what’s really been impressive is that the star player stepped it up when his team really needed him. In Game 4, when it became so easy to doubt New York as they were behind 29 points, Brunson delivered his strongest game of the Finals.

He totaled 36 points for the game on 12/25 shooting, and he was 3/7 on three-pointers and 9/11 on free throws. He also had seven assists, five rebounds, three steals, and only three turnovers. It’s that kind of performance under pressure that has gotten New York to the NBA Finals, and it’s that kind of showing that will get them over the finish line.

The Knicks Have To Be Emotionless

It’s difficult to separate sports and emotion. It feels so good when your team wins. However, the Knicks have to be emotionless going into this game.

They have to forget about their historic win on Wednesday. They have to follow the advice of Brunson, who said after Wednesday’s game, “There’s nothing to celebrate. It’s not over yet, not even close.” That’s the right attitude to have, and if New York goes into Game 5 with that attitude, they’re halfway there.

It’s not just about the attitude, of course. New York has to be on point on Saturday. It won’t be easy playing Game 5 in Texas. Sure, the Knicks have already won down there during the Finals, but when everything is at stake, the hometown crowd gets extra hungry. So, it’s time for New York to make some noise in San Antonio. If they do these things, their shot at making this a five-game series gets better.

Featured Image: Brad Penner-Imagn Images

The New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs are heading into another dramatic game on Saturday, June 13th.
