What looks like a luxury pick on paper with LaMelo Ball already leading the charge could quickly become a necessity if negotiations with White take an unexpected turn.

One of the most pressing questions for Charlotte is which position group they will target in the 2026 draft. Burries is a remarkably polished prospect who checks a ton of boxes. In a class this deep, it wouldn’t be shocking to see a player of his caliber slip a few spots.

If the draft board falls their way, the Hornets could walk out of draft night with both a long‑term building block and a safety net for one of their most important offseason decisions.

2026 NBA Draft: Hornets Could Be Massive Winners If Brayden Burries Falls

Burries is Perfect for Hornets After Play‑In Collapse

Physicality is the theme for the Hornets this offseason. This is where Burries comes in.

Burries has good size at 6’4” with a 6’6” wingspan. These aren’t incredible measurables, but boasting 215 pounds at the speed he plays at will intrigue scouts. For reference, he weighs just as much as Kon Knueppel, who is a few inches taller than him.

When it comes to his defense, his point-of-attack work really stands out. He’s also great at playing off-ball defense by disrupting passing lanes and not giving up easy buckets.

Players like this were exactly the reason for the Hornets’ demise in the play-in. Jalen Suggs was extremely effective at applying pressure and setting the tone during that matchup. The Hornets could use their own version of a Suggs‑type disruptor.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBwZsfI1ZJ" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4253px; aspect-ratio: 4253/2835;" ></smartframe-embed>

And with Burries, you’re not just getting that defensive edge—you’re adding a legitimate three‑level scorer who can space the floor, knock down shots with confidence, and operate as a secondary creator. He can handle the offense when Ball is off the court, complement him when he’s on it, and bring the kind of motor that energizes both teammates and the crowd.

Will Burries Actually Be Available at 14?

It would be very shocking if Burries were to fall this far. While he’s not projected as a lead guard, he’s a jack-of-all-trades and a perfect complement next to one. A few mock drafts have Burries falling later in the lottery, with reports suggesting he’s attempting to find a way to Dallas.

ESPN’s Bobby Marks has proposed a trade idea of packaging the No. 14 and No. 18 picks to the Mavericks. If the Mavs prefer quantity over quality in this draft, the Hornets should jump on that immediately to acquire a high-end prospect like Burries.

If Charlotte were to only come out of the first round with a guard, it would make Hornets fans scratch their heads. Rightfully so, as the frontcourt is the priority. However, the draft isn’t the only way to upgrade the roster.

There have been Domantas Sabonis rumors floating around, and there could be other bigs on the market in free agency. The Hornets have plenty of avenues to upgrade the frontcourt, so targeting Burries makes a lot of sense given the circumstances.

© Eakin Howard-Imagn Images

Believe it or not, the Charlotte Hornets are once again in the market for another guard in the 2026 NBA Draft.
