After a feisty seven-game series, the Oklahoma City Thunder are clearly right there with them. But two other Western Conference hopefuls have some work to do. Maybe the Houston Rockets and the Denver Nuggets could help each other out.

How A Rockets-Nuggets Trade Could Help Both Parties

The Rockets and Nuggets are both trying to build around offensively talented, but defensively turnstile-like big men. It goes without saying that the Nuggets’ version is better. Nikola Jokic’s three MVPs and 2023 Finals MVP say that pretty well on their own. But there is a caveat: the Rockets’ Alperen Sengun may be, very slightly, the less defensively turnstile-like of the two of them.

The eye test shows Sengun to be the nimbler and more energetic defender. Additionally, he averaged 1.1 blocks per game this season compared to Jokic’s 0.8 and had a Defensive rating of 113.7 compared to Jokic’s slightly less desirable 115.3. Because of Jokic’s size, strength, and steal-generating savvy, the difference is minimal. But the 23-year-old Sengun is also far more likely to keep improving on that side of the ball.

Of course, any slight edge Sengun has on defense doesn’t remotely account for the gulf between them on offense. Even so, it’s a distinction that the respective front offices should be mindful of. And yet, the Rockets and Nuggets’ drastically different approaches to roster construction fly in the face of it.

The Rockets have crammed their roster full of hard-nosed defenders, who Sengun isn’t talented enough to carry on offense. Meanwhile, the Nuggets have surrounded Jokic with finesse players who lack the defensive tenacity to keep him from getting exposed in the paint. Both franchises experienced first-round losses against injury-ravaged opponents as a result. The Rockets lost to the Los Angeles Lakers, missing Luka Doncic, because they couldn’t throw the ball into the Pacific Ocean. And the Nuggets lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves, missing Anthony Edwards, because they didn’t have the perimeter defense to keep the dinged-up Wolves from the door to the rim.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBW64ylxDJ" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2620px; aspect-ratio: 2620/1747;" ></smartframe-embed>

The Ideal Rockets-Nuggets Trade

Of course, if either team went too far the other way, they’d inevitably run into each other’s problems. But perhaps there could be a middle ground. There’s one Rockets-Nuggets trade of 6-foot-8 forwards that could get them there. The Houston Rockets could sign and trade Tari Eason to the Denver Nuggets for Cameron Johnson.

The Rockets’ Eason will be a restricted free agent this season with plenty of suitors at a price range of $20-30 million per year. The Nuggets’ Johnson will be on the final year of his contract and due to make $23 million in 2026-27.

Comparing the Two Forwards

Tari Eason

In 2025-26, Eason averaged 10.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game. After a hot start, he finished the year at 35.8% from three on 4.3 attempts per game. He played 60 games and averaged 25.8 minutes. It was the 24-year-old’s fourth year in the NBA, all with Houston.

Cameron Johnson

In the 30-year-old Johnson’s seventh season, he averaged 12.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.4 blocks per game. Brought in last offseason as a replacement for Michael Porter Jr, he played 54 games, all starts, and averaged 30.5 minutes. Crucially, Johnson shot 43.0% from three, albeit on a bafflingly low 4.7 attempts. For his career, Johnson averages 39.6% from three on 5.8 attempts.

Each player aligns nicely with the other team’s needs. Houston desperately needs shooting around its pre-gunpowder core duo of Sengun and Amen Thompson. Denver, on the other hand, needs perimeter defense and toughness to help alleviate the defensive pressure on Jokic at the rim. That need will be amplified if they lose the payday-due Peyton Watson this offseason to avoid the salary cap second apron.

Admittedly, from a Houston perspective, this Rockets-Nuggets trade might seem like a significant opportunity loss. The younger Eason certainly ought to have the most untapped potential of the two players. The trouble is that Houston’s current offensive ecosystem clearly isn’t going to tap it.

Why Eason Could Thrive In Denver

The Rockets should have Fred VanVleet back next season. If it’s anything like before he got injured, head coach Ime Udoka will be reluctant to ever have the 6-foot point guard off the floor. Eason already seemed to feel constrained by his role in Houston this season. Partly, that was a desire to maximize his next contract. But also, he’s an obviously talented young player who has yet to discover his true ceiling.

Sengun is a flashy passer and an excellent post scorer. Jokic is perhaps the best passer in NBA history. Eason’s effectiveness off-ball would be amplified immediately.

Jokic also doesn’t dominate the ball as much as Sengun. While Jokic leads the league with 100.2 touches per game compared with Sengun’s 71.1, Jokic’s average seconds per touch is just 2.74. Sengun’s 3.23 seconds per touch is still low, but along with 2.06 dribbles per touch compared with Jokic’s 1.32, it betrays the comparative ungainliness of Houston’s offense. Eason doesn’t project as ever being a featured creator, but he’d probably get more opportunities on the ball in Denver than he would in Houston as well.

Would It Be Worth It?

Nuggets fans might bemoan their own lack of shooting with this trade. But Denver just shot the highest 3-point percentage in the NBA. They had the fifth-highest offensive rating. With Jokic, they will always have a top-tier offense. It’s defense and toughness around Jokic that can help them survive the bludgeoning physicality that has undone them in recent playoff losses. This simple Rockets-Nuggets trade could give them that.

Houston and Denver both have significant flaws — ones that will probably need major work done for them to take a bite out of the West’s top contenders. In relation to those flaws, this Rockets-Nuggets trade would be more like using floss than getting new crowns. But if there’s one person on either team who seems like he’d know how to floss, it’s definitely Tari Eason.

© Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images

From a crowded field of Western Conference contenders and contender wannabes, the San Antonio Spurs have returned to the NBA Finals.
