This past underwhelming season highly exposed their structural weaknesses due to the absence of an elite player to dictate winning. But, before this dire draught, they had one in the form of Jimmy Butler. If not a superstar, then Butler was most definitely a guiding star and an elite player who carried the team to two NBA Finals appearances and surpassed expectations.

Since they have parted ways, Butler has gone on to unleash a new side of himself with the Golden State Warriors despite going down with a torn right ACL in January. Meanwhile, the Heat lived through a rocky season with questionable performances that ultimately led them to sit out of the playoffs for the first time in seven years. Hence, the question arises: Was Butler really the Heat’s saving grace?

How Jimmy Butler’s Departure Left the Miami Heat in Shambles

Prior to Butler’s season-ending injury, his arrival to Golden State saw his resurrection, exhibiting a great fit for the NBA’s treasure, Stephen Curry. But preceding that revival is a bad experience and bitter ending with the Heat, a team he called home for six years.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBJ58mCFlL" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2000px; aspect-ratio: 2000/1314;" ></smartframe-embed>

Jimmy Butler’s Uplifting Era With the Heat

Butler was among the most influential players Miami ever had. His ground presence and strength were commanding. He perfectly embodied the famous “Heat culture” through his committed work ethic, competitiveness and elevation of the team as a whole. Moreover, during his tenure, Butler historically took the Heat to the NBA Finals in 2020 and 2023, giving the team some memorable runs. He also led them three to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2020, 2022 — where he scored a momentous 47 points — and 2023. He earned the nickname “Playoff Jimmy” for supporting the team’s weight during postseason runs.

In his first five seasons with the Heat from 2019-24, Butler averaged 21.3 points, 5.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game. His talent shone under the guidance of head coach Erik Spoelstra. Such was his impact that Pat Riley was not ready to trade him even by December 2024. At some point, the Heat even attempted to make a “Big Three” consisting of Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Tyler Herro, but it didn’t work out.

However, by last January, Butler and the Heat fell off slowly in a saga that included multiple suspensions over detrimental conduct and Butler’s arising unhappiness playing for the team. He said he wanted to get his “joy back playing basketball,” something he no longer had in Miami. By then, the relationship had run its course, which ultimately led to a trade request and subsequent move to the Golden State Warriors at the 2025 deadline. After him, the Heat’s roster has been weaker than ever, which has left them desperate for another top acquisition.

The Miami Heat’s Struggling Season

This past year, many of Miami’s younger players struggled on the court. Forward Nikola Jović found it hard to fit into the new adapting system. Herro also didn’t meet expectations, playing only 33 games and believing his time in Miami could also run out. His pairing with Norman Powell didn’t produce any effective results, with failed shots and negative ratings. Starting small forward Andrew Wiggins — acquired in exchange for Butler — has also shown inconsistency. When Butler held that role, he provided all-around support as the shooting guard or power forward in times of need.

The Heat ultimately finished 2025-26 as the tenth seed in the East at 43-39, entering the Play-in Tournament for the fourth consecutive season. They fell to the ninth-seeded Charlotte Hornets in an overtime thriller, 127-126.

Jimmy Butler’s Glow Up After Leaving the Heat

With the Warriors, Butler found a new lease of life, thriving on court and providing veteran guidance to the younger players. Prior to his injury, he played 38 games in which he averaged 20.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists while serving as a dependable figure for the team in Curry’s absence.

Meanwhile, the Heat are having sleepless nights, and Pat Riley is ready to leave no stone unturned to improve his roster for better results. Butler may have had some disagreements with the Heat before his departure, but the team certainly feels an impactful void in his absence now.

© Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

The Miami Heat need a superstar; it’s a fact and the most crucial demand of the time.
