Following the NBA’s Board of Governors’ passing of the new “3-2-1” lottery system, it was revealed that Memphis was the only team to vote against it.

Before the vote, details surrounding one of the Grizzlies’ new picks from the Jaren Jackson Jr. trade caught attention around the league. The NBA sent its final version of the proposal to teams about a week before the vote. The proposal created a scenario where the Grizzlies could lose value on a critical pick if Utah has a disappointing season.

While the worst-case scenario feels unlikely to play out, Grizzlies fans are outraged by the possibility of it.

Why Grizzlies Fans Are Outraged About the NBA’s Lottery Vote

Why the Utah Pick Situation Makes Grizzlies Fans Outraged

Under the new lottery system, Utah’s 2027 first-round pick cannot land inside the top five selections. The Jazz had a top-five selection last year and have another one this season, and the new system doesn’t allow teams to pick in the top five in three consecutive drafts.

How does this affect the Grizzlies? They received three first-round picks from the Jazz in the Jackson Jr. trade in February. One of those picks will be the most favorable of Utah, Cleveland, or Minnesota’s 2027 picks. If the Jazz finish poorly enough to end up in the top five of the next drawing ahead of those teams, the pick will automatically go to number six.

Many fans and analysts are outraged at the fact that the trade wasn’t grandfathered in, and for good reason. The Grizzlies losing access to a potential top-five pick after making a trade based on another system that would’ve given them that pick is hard to fathom.

Especially when considering that Memphis is the only team that is directly affected by the new lottery system. That scenario immediately angered fans because it essentially penalizes Memphis for circumstances outside its control.

Adam Silver doing everything he possibly can to get the Memphis Grizzlies to relocate…

I cannot get over how badly they are getting screwed over here… OF COURSE they voted no – There's not a single reason on Gods green earth for them to have voted yes. They got SCREWED. https://t.co/aoWBAQITWd

— Josh Reynolds (@JoshReynolds24) May 28, 2026

For a city and team that has taken a lot of negative publicity recently, it feels like another slap in the face. That is exactly why Grizzlies fans are outraged at the specifics of that pick.

Small-Market Teams Depend on Draft Stability

Another major reason Grizzlies fans are outraged is that Memphis has historically depended on smart drafting more than most organizations. The franchise built its previous era largely through internal development. Players like Jackson Jr., Ja Morant and Desmond Bane became foundational pieces because Memphis consistently extracted value from the draft.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBLW5R5eap" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3600px; aspect-ratio: 3600/2400;" ></smartframe-embed>

That reality makes future first-round picks especially important. Unlike larger markets, the Grizzlies rarely attract star free agents. A recent anonymous poll of where NBA players would not want to be traded was led by Memphis, which received 35.8% of the vote among 120 players polled. That means they must build patiently through young talent selected in the draft, and any proposal that weakens that naturally creates frustration among the fan base.

The proposed system feels like another example of small-market concerns being overlooked during league-wide decision-making.

Why the New Lottery System Likely Won’t Matter

The Jazz added Jackson Jr. to a talented roster that was expected to be in play-in contention next season. Now, the Jazz will add the No. 2 pick to that equation, with many predicting them to make the playoffs outright. If that scenario plays out, Memphis would be the winners as the new lottery system evened out the odds for teams finishing fourth through tenth.

Also, Memphis has three first-round picks in next year’s draft. Although the Lakers’ pick they have is top-four protected, the Grizzlies could conceivably receive another top-five selection through their own pick. Cleveland or Minnesota could also finish worse than Utah, propelling the discussed pick.

Ultimately, Grizzlies fans are outraged because the situation feels unfair on multiple levels. The franchise followed the rules and planned around existing protections at the time of the trade. Now, an adjustment potentially reduces the value of one of its most important assets — all before the pick even conveys. For a team relying heavily on long-term planning, that possibility feels like a legitimate reason for concern.

© Rob Gray-Imagn Images

Memphis Grizzlies fans are outraged after the newly approved NBA lottery reform reduced the value of Memphis’ future draft assets tied to the Utah Jazz.
