Memphis Grizzlies fans are outraged after the newly approved NBA lottery reform reduced the value of Memphis\u2019 future draft assets tied to the Utah Jazz. Following the NBA’s Board of Governors’ passing of the new \u201c3-2-1\u201d lottery system<\/a>, it was revealed that Memphis was the only team to vote against it.<\/p>\n

Before the vote, details surrounding one of the Grizzlies’ new picks from the Jaren Jackson Jr.<\/a> trade caught attention around the league. The NBA sent its final version<\/a> of the proposal to teams about a week before the vote. The proposal created a scenario where the Grizzlies could lose value on a critical pick if Utah has a disappointing season.<\/p>\n

While the worst-case scenario feels unlikely to play out, Grizzlies fans are outraged by the possibility of it.<\/p>\n

Why the Utah Pick Situation Makes Grizzlies Fans Outraged<\/h3>\n

Under the new lottery system, Utah\u2019s 2027 first-round pick<\/a> cannot land inside the top five selections. The Jazz had a top-five selection last year and have another one this season, and the new system doesn\u2019t allow teams to pick in the top five in three consecutive drafts.<\/p>\n

How does this affect the Grizzlies? They received three first-round picks from the Jazz in the Jackson Jr. trade<\/a> in February. One of those picks will be the most favorable of Utah, Cleveland, or Minnesota’s 2027 picks. If the Jazz finish poorly enough to end up in the top five of the next drawing ahead of those teams, the pick will automatically go to number six.<\/p>\n

Many fans and analysts are outraged at the fact that the trade wasn\u2019t grandfathered in, and for good reason. The Grizzlies losing access to a potential top-five pick after making a trade based on another system that would\u2019ve given them that pick is hard to fathom.<\/p>\n

Especially when considering that Memphis is the only team that is directly affected by the new lottery system. That scenario immediately angered fans because it essentially penalizes Memphis for circumstances outside its control.<\/p>\n
