But ultimately, if we\u2019re being completely honest, we were \u2018out-talented.\u2019 We were not outworked. They didn\u2019t out-physical us. They didn\u2019t outsmart us. I feel like we were just out-talent[ed] by OKC. They just possess so much more talent. \u2026 I feel like there\u2019s times where we had moments where we out-IQ\u2019d them. But at the end of the day, we failed in talent.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can\u2019t get caught up in that when you\u2019re undermanned for sure,\u201d he concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though James\u2019 blunt assessment of the series could easily be construed as a shot to some of his teammates, it doesn\u2019t change the fact the Lakers (like most of the league) were at a disadvantage against the defending champions. That reality has made their offseason pursuit of such talent all the more critical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: 800px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOB23IeVUl2\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2665px; aspect-ratio: 2665\/1777;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<h3>Lakers Free Agents Who Could Return<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James is one of eight <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nba\/free-agents\/_\/year\/2026\/team\/lal\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free agents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Lakers will need to worry about this summer, with him and four teammates (<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rui Hachimura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kennalu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luke Kennard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/klebima01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maxi Kleber<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hayesja02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaxson Hayes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) being unrestricted. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smartma01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcus Smart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aytonde01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deandre Ayton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all have player options, though Reaves is all but confirmed to be opting out for a hefty payday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the team has expressed a desire to retain James and Reaves, players like Smart, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2026\/05\/13\/rui-hachimura-lakers\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hachimura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Kennard have promising cases to come back as well. Whether it was the veteran defender taking charge on the court and in the locker room, the starter-turned-reserve embarking on a playoff run to remember, or the perennial perimeter marksman keeping his shooting touch alive in LA, those three could easily retain their roles heading into next season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there are the question marks surrounding the team\u2019s big men. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7127470\/2026\/03\/18\/deandre-ayton-lakers-nba\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s late-season epiphany contributed to the Lakers\u2019 success, though they could (and should) still look elsewhere for a better starting center. Likewise, his backup Hayes has said he\u2019d <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/jaxson-hayes-would-of-course-want-to-return-to-lakers-next-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201clove to stay\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the Lakers, though his case is as much of a coin flip as Ayton\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>James Once Again Puts Pressure on Lakers Brass<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although they were <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/47949695\/why-los-angeles-lakers-quiet-nba-trade-deadline-explosive-offseason-lebron-james-luka-doncic-giannis-antetkounmpo\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a host of pending free agents from rival contenders\u2014<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/watsope01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peyton Watson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/easonta01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tari Eason<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kesslwa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walker Kessler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, among others\u2014a May 16 <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/los-angeles-lakers\/nba-trade-rumors-big-board-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Heavy\u2019s Sean Deveney has tempered Lakers fans\u2019 expectations.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasingly, it looks like the massive changes fans want for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lakers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aren\u2019t quite what the team has in mind. The plan appears to be to keep <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at something less than the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/lakers-austin-reaves-receives-240m-050011713.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maximum $240 million-plus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and to seek solutions at the center spot, an annual tradition in LA. Beyond that, dreams of adding restricted free agents <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walker Kessler or Peyton Watson or Jalen Duren<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are almost certainly not happening.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, LeBron James\u2019 statements should turn the tide and send a clear message to president\/GM Rob Pelinka: surround him, Reaves and Doncic with the right talent, or he moves onto greener pastures after a storied eight-year tenure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After all, James later told Nash he\u2019d \u201cabsolutely\u201d want to keep playing in a positive environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWinning is most important because you want to be excited about going to work every day. You want to be excited about \u2026 winning the day and being around a group of guys that feel the same way and trying not to take steps backwards. \u2026 I\u2019m not going anywhere where it\u2019s a \u2018start over at year 24\u2019 or things of that nature.
