In a search for stability that the Friars have not had since Ed Cooley, the program opted to hire rising coach Bryan Hodgson.

Hodgson, once an assistant to Nate Oats at Alabama, also had successful head-coaching stints at Arkansas State and South Florida last year, where he went 25-9 and reached the NCAA tournament. Along with a new coach, the Friars have a whole new roster, like their conference foe, Xavier. Providence is also only returning one starter from last year. That is rising junior Ryan Mela, who averaged 9.9 points per game, 5.3 rebounds, and shot 50% from the floor. Mela looks to be a big part of Hodgson’s tough brand of basketball for the Friars.

The New Look Providence Friars Are Poised To Be A Force In The Big East

Providence’s Recruit

This may not be a big recruiting class for Providence, in terms of the number of recruits, but it is quality over quantity when it comes to this year’s class for the Friars. The lone recruit for Providence is G-League standout guard Dink Pate. Pate is 20 years of age and has played in the G-League for 3 years. Last year, Pate played for the Westchester Knicks, where he averaged 16 points per game, 6.7 rebounds per game, and 3.6 assists per game. He also participated in the NBA Rising Stars Challenge. Even though Pate played professionally in the G-League, many people expect Pate to be granted eligibility because he never officially signed a 10-day contract.

BREAKING: Westchester Knicks guard Dink Pate has committed to Providence, his agent Sam Permut of @RocNationSports told ESPN. G-League star turned down two-way and 10-day opportunities to maintain eligibility. Former top-30 recruit is averaging 16.0 PPG this season. pic.twitter.com/SNLnJV8zRH

— Jeff Borzello (@jeffborzello) April 10, 2026

The Friars Portal Haul

While Pate was a very big addition for Hodgson, the real damage was done in the transfer portal, where the Friars have added eight transfers so far. Hodgson started with a bang, adding consensus top 10 transfer portal target Miles Byrd. Last season, Byrd averaged 10.4 points per game, 4.7 rebounds per game, and 1.9 steals per game. He is known for his defensive prowess and should thrive in Hodgson’s up-tempo and high-pressure system. This will be Byrd’s final season. The next addition for Providence was Hodgson’s backup freshman point guard at South Florida last year, Gavin Hightower. Hightower played in 26 games, averaging 10 minutes a game and 4.1 points per game. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

Hodgson stayed in the American Athletic Conference with his next addition, adding the AAC’s most improved player as well as FAU’s leading scorer from last year, Devin Vanterpool. Vanterpool is a very solid defender and versatile scorer, averaging 15.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game last season. He will have two years of eligibility remaining. The Friars then added Ryan Sabol, who set the single-season record for most threes in a season for The University of Buffalo last year with 122 threes. Sabol averaged 18.8 points per game, shot 40% from three, and has one year of eligibility remaining.

A three-point marksman was followed up by adding a strong rim protector in Yale’s starting center, Samson Aletan. Aletan averaged 1.4 blocks, 7.8 points, and 5.8 rebounds per game last season. He has one year of eligibility remaining. Next, Hodgson added who looks to be his starting center in Arrinten Page. Page started 16 of Northwestern’s 29 games last year, averaged 10.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game. This will be Page’s fourth school in four years, having previously played at USC and Cincinnati. Page has one year of eligibility remaining.

After adding two centers, Hodgson found his starting point guard in Georgetown’s Malik Mack. After winning Ivy League rookie of the year at Harvard, Mack has spent the last two seasons starting at Georgetown. He averaged 13.6 points, 4.1 assists, and shot 38% from the floor with the Hoyas last year. Mack will have one year of eligibility remaining. The Friars then added a power forward from UNLV, Jacob Bannarbie. Bannarbie started in 15 out of the 30 games from UNLV last year, averaging 5.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and shooting 52% from the floor. He does virtually all of his work on the offensive end from inside the three-point line and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBFcURt3Vu" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5283px; aspect-ratio: 5283/3522;" ></smartframe-embed>

Projected Depth Chart

PG: Mack, Hightower

SG: Pate, Sabol

SF: Byrd, Vanterpool

PF: Mela, Bannarbie

C: Page, Aletan

The Last Word On Providence’s Offseason

This looks to be a very strong roster for Hodgson in his first year with the Friars. The strength of this team looks to be their wings. The combination of Pate, Byrd, Vanterpool, and Sabol could be lethal in the Big East. The offensive and defensive versatility of these players should fit perfectly into Hodgson’s up-tempo system.

This roster looks very talented; however, questions remain. First and foremost, will Pate be cleared to play by the NCAA? Mack has struggled with consistency and handling the physicality of the Big East, only shooting 38% from the floor the past two seasons. He won’t be asked to have as big a scoring role at Providence, but his ability to control the offense for the Friars and limit turnovers will be a big question. Can Page and Aletan provide the Friars with a solid anchor at the center position?

While it does not appear that Providence will have any more major additions, there are still roster spots available to shore up the rotation. The Friars will be relying heavily on their wings, and although questions remain for the two most important positions, center and point guard, Providence should once again be competing at the top of the Big East conference.

Featured Image: David DelPoio/The Providence Journal / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Kim English’s time at Providence did not go according to plan.
