In his Western Conference Finals debut, he broke personal records and recorded stats that haven’t been posted in over 50 years. His domination over the defending champions on both sides of the ball is not just impressive, but also a testament to his willpower after he played every minute in both overtime periods.

Victor Wembanyama is the Best Player in the World

Wembanyama’s Performance of the Year

Wemby dropped 41 points, 24 rebounds and three blocks. However, the stats on paper don’t tell the whole story. The OKC Thunder not only have the best record in the league, but star Jalen Williams played phenomenally after missing most of the season with injuries. Alex Caruso was a beast, causing a plethora of turnovers and shooting lights out from three. Despite the loss, OKC was arguably at the highest level we have ever seen them. Wembanyama was getting double-teamed, and no effort was spared to knock the ball out of his hands and play him tough.

With only three turnovers, Wembanyama was able to deny the Thunder their ideal game, despite his struggles with swarming defenses. This was a pattern that continued into the fourth quarter and both overtimes. Playing a career high 49 minutes, his consistency was nothing short of mind-boggling. We have seen Wembanyama gas out early in games; for instance, in Game 1 against the T-Wolves, Wemby partially attributed the loss to his energy management. Yet he was still creating highlights late in the game.

Dropping an efficient 41 points on the best defense in the league isn’t easy, but Wembanyama also hit huge clutch shots. In the first overtime period, he took a huge 3-pointer from near mid-court to tie the game at 108. Before the shot, the game looked over. The Thunder’s defense was clicking and MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was finally playing like himself.

“It felt like he dropped a nuke down on the court,” Spurs’ forward Keldon Johnson said.

This amazing performance was all without his running mate and fellow All-Star De’Aaron Fox, who missed the game due to a right ankle sprain.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBdDN8op7P" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4988px; aspect-ratio: 4988/3327;" ></smartframe-embed>

A One Of A Kind Defensive Impact

At one point in the second quarter, a shocking stat was mentioned on the broadcast. With Wembanyama on the floor at that point, the Thunder were shooting 32%. With him off the court, the Thunder were shooting 62.5%. One man was effectively shutting down the defending champions. Although the Thunder picked things up later, the game ended with a dominant block from Wembanyama to stun fans at Paycom Center.

Writing His Name In The Record Book

Wemby is the first player since Wilt Chamberlain to record over 40 points and 20 rebounds in his conference finals debut. Not only was Chamberlain’s debut more than half a century ago, but it was a completely different era. 3-second violations didn’t exist, and neither did the 3-point line. Most importantly, the sport was smaller. Players who could have dominated in the era from other countries did not even play basketball. Today, we live in a world where any athletic 7-footer would have a scholarship for basketball. Wembanyama did what he did against the best competition possible.

The Last Word on Wemby

Wembanyama left it all out on the court. Often thought of as the future of the league, Wembanyama made his case being the face of it right now. A 22-year-old dominating a healthy team that cruised through the playoffs last year is something that has never happened before. The only comparison is a second-year Tim Duncan sweeping the Shaquille O’Neal Lakers (who had not won a championship at that point).

Wemby’s competition for best player in the world looks thin. Nikola Jokic had his worst playoff performance since 2022 against the Timberwolves. SGA just won his second MVP and struggled mightily against “The Alien.” The French center even laughed at him after he missed a close shot. Gilgeous-Alexander shot a horrendous 30.4% from the field. And if Wembanyama wins a ring this year, Luka Doncic has absolutely no argument as to being the better player.

One thing is for sure. After it was all over and Wembanyama started to greet his team’s bench, he struck a pose. He held his shoulders high and looked off to the side, like he was standing on top of a mountain and looking at what he had accomplished. Meanwhile, his teammates looked at him with a variety of shocked faces. That image will live on in basketball history.

Victor Wembanyama striking a pose in front of the Spurs bench

This is amazing pic.twitter.com/dVFa97WcCU

— Hoop Central (@TheHoopCentral) May 19, 2026

Later stating as he walked to the locker room that he might “fall over,” Wembanyama’s raised shoulders looked like they had carried the weight of the hardest game anyone on the court had played.
