Throughout the postseason, Detroit are wearing themselves out thanks to long, difficult series. And they will eventually run up against a team that won’t let them dig themselves out of the hole they created, keeping in mind that Cleveland could be that team.

The Detroit Pistons Can’t Win Titles By Falling Behind In Every Series

Detroit fans love basketball, and they love the Pistons. They were incredibly excited when their hometown team took the number one seed in the Eastern Conference after the regular season. Unfortunately, Detroit hasn’t been playing like that team in the postseason.

Their first round matchup was against the Orlando Magic, who had to fight their way into the playoffs through the Play-In Tournament. Detroit quickly found themselves down three games to one, largely thanks to not taking the postseason seriously. Honestly, it’s hard to say if that was really the case or not, but Tobias Harris sure seemed to think so. He accurately called his own team out for being too casual.

The Pistons would go on to win three straight games against the Magic, ultimately taking the series four games to one. Cade Cunningham led the charge with players like Daniss Jenkins at his back. It also didn’t hurt that Orlando’s Franz Wagner was out for those three games.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBgCJQNzty" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072/2048;" ></smartframe-embed>

Round Two Ends Up Being The Same As Round One

After making a historic comeback against the Magic, fans had big expectations for the Pistons in round two. The Cleveland Cavaliers had their own first-round war against the Toronto Raptors. It was a hard-fought victory, but the Cavs made it through. Then, Detroit dropped the hammer and took the first two games from Cleveland in Little Caesars Arena. The Pistons had just won five playoff games in a row.

Then, they turned around and dropped the next three to the Cavaliers, who now lead the series three games to two. Making the situation even worse is the fact that Game Six is in Cleveland, meaning the Cavs have a hometown advantage in a matchup that could end the series. If Detroit don’t show up with “play or go home” energy, that’s exactly what will happen.

This collapse has been largely due to issues with fouls and turnovers, problems that have meant the difference between winning and losing throughout Detroit’s postseason run. Cleveland is not a team the Pistons want to give an opening to. Players like Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, and Jarrett Allen are more than happy to take advantage of them, and have frequently done so in these last three losses.

Detroit Will Not Win An NBA Championship This Way

The Pistons won three games in a row to complete the comeback against the Magic. As such, winning two games to win their series against the Cavs isn’t exactly out of the question. When Detroit locks in, they are capable of beating any team in the league.

Even if they make it past Cleveland, the dominant Knicks are waiting for them in the Eastern Conference Finals. New York just swept the 76ers so savagely that they fired their President of Basketball Operations. If Detroit gets behind in a series against the Knicks, there’s no coming back. New York is playing incredible playoff basketball and could easily end the Pistons’ season if Detroit isn’t careful.

If Detroit keep it together long enough to get all the way to the NBA Finals, they definitely can’t let OKC, San Antonio, or Minnesota get ahead. None of those teams will let Detroit get away with getting down in the count, then fighting their way back in a championship series. The Pistons need to start playing every game like an elimination game. For the rest of the Cavs series, that’s exactly what’s happening.

Featured Image: Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images

The Detroit Pistons once again find themselves playing from behind in a playoff series, which makes winning an NBA title incredibly difficult.
