With the way the series is going, it seems that OKC vs LAL is showing why depth is the biggest key to success that the Thunder are riding into the sunset with. The Lakers have locked down Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for two games: first with turnovers, then foul trouble in the previous game. Yet, unsurprisingly, they’re still winning big.

Say what you will about the officiating, it’s not really the biggest factor here. It’s more of what Oklahoma City has built over the years that is starting to pay off in the long run. Criticism is just another proof that they’re succeeding, just like how many great NBA teams and players have been subject to criticism from fans and analysts alike. Now more than ever, the OKC bench deserves its flowers and a bigger spotlight.

OKC vs LAL Shows Value Of Depth For Oklahoma City Thunder

By now, we have seen the defending champions take care of business for two games in a row. That’s also a winning streak of six games to begin the playoffs. However, with Jalen Williams still recovering from his hamstring injury and SGA apparently not playing his best basketball so far, depth has been the key to success for OKC. Now they’re going to have to carry that same pace heading into the road in Game Three.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBzKVq0Mub" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 1024px; aspect-ratio: 1024/683;" ></smartframe-embed>

OKC Bench Has Been Special In The Playoffs

Bench power is one of the key strengths that OKC has relied on since its rise to prominence in the SGA era. Names such as Cason Wallace, Jared McCain, Isaiah Joe, Jaylin Williams, and Alex Caruso are names not really known by many. But somehow, fans watching the Thunder playoffs this year are getting to know them better. Then there’s still the likes of Aaron Wiggins, Kenrich Williams, and even Nikola Topic just waiting for their numbers to get called.

Six of the Thunder’s top 10 points total against the Lakers in this series have come from players off the bench. There’s even a technicality in that, considering that Ajay Mitchell was upped to a starting role in J-Dub’s absence. Had it not been for the Oklahoma City star’s injury, Mitchell would also be coming off the bench.

Now, McCain is getting all the love with his explosive performances in the first two games. However, it’s worth noting that he’s logged only 22 minutes in the first round. McCain’s value suddenly rose in the OKC vs LAL series, but there’s more to expect from the rest. Defense has also been generated by this bench, and those 20 turnovers didn’t come from nothing.

The OKC bias HAS to stop…

The refs made the Lakers turn the basketball over TWENTY TIMES tonight 🤯 pic.twitter.com/m7N6XlxZ2b

— NBA Tour Dates (@NBATourDates) May 8, 2026

In fact, Caruso leads the Thunder bench points in the whole playoffs so far. For a player expected to be more focused on the defensive end, the Bald Mamba is indeed shining bright. Unexpectedly, McCain comes second — quite a surprise, considering he averages 9.1 minutes per game in the rotation. That just means he’s making his minutes count, and the OKC bench is shining whenever he’s on the floor. For context, the Thunder are ranked fifth among active teams in the playoffs for most bench points.

A Perspective In Thunder Dominance

Contrary to the social media discourse, Oklahoma City dominates through its sheer depth, and not with the help of referees — or even getting to the line. Those two cases are easy to debunk at this point. First of all, most critics are claiming that Game Two was a sham – a game given by the refs to OKC. You know it got worse when you’ve seen Foot Locker – a shoe store – join in on the rounds of criticizing the so-called unfair officiating with now-deleted tweets. Right now, it’s hard to blame anyone for thinking that way until they check the facts.

The Lakers were called for 26 fouls, and the Thunder had 21. That’s also the same differential in free throws — with OKC going 21/26, and LAL at 18/21. Sure, there were egregious calls and even flop attempts from Oklahoma City, but there were a lot of missed calls going their way.

Since drawing fouls tend to differ in judgement depending on which side you’re rooting for, the numbers are the safest way to go. In fact, Los Angeles has the most free throw attempts for this season, including the playoffs. They also boast the seventh-most free throw attempts in the postseason at 192. For context, they’re a mile ahead of the Thunder, who sit with 137 attempts at 13th place.

Teams with most free throw attempts per game this season, including playoffs:

1.
2. Thunder pic.twitter.com/TXlwjo2wMb

— StatMuse (@statmuse) May 8, 2026

Now, the biggest reason why the Lakers lost in Game Two was the turnover game. OKC forced 20 turnovers and scored 26 points off them. The Thunder also finished with 12 steals and five blocks. But perhaps the most overlooked thing about this game was the bench battle. Oklahoma City’s reserves outscored the Lakers’ bench 48-20. Now that’s a glaring talking point. That’s mostly ignored by critics who only focus on the officiating side of the game. As we’ve mentioned before, and as many critics have, OKC shines with its rich pool of talent. It’s coming from years of planning by Thunder GM Sam Presti, and now they’re reaping the rewards from it.

OKC vs LAL Highlights Thunder Bench’s Power

Don’t let the officiating talk distract you. Oklahoma City’s bench has proven itself time and time again. It’s all about playing what’s in front of you. The Thunder, so far, has played all the cards it can to respond to the Lakers. SGA had seven turnovers in Game One, and they couldn’t beat OKC. Gilgeous-Alexander gets into foul trouble, and yet the champs still win by 18.

Now, what are the Lakers going to do when SGA goes on fire, and the Thunder bench keeps up? It’s absolute mayhem. They may blame the refs again, or probably face the fact that the OKC bench is definitely something else to contend with.

Featured Image: Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images

The Oklahoma City Thunder have grasped a 2-0 series lead after yet another 18-point win in Game Two against the Los Angeles Lakers.
