Now, he is ready to be the star again, making Portland’s future even brighter. With the Blazers’ coach not decided just yet, at least fans can always look forward to Lillard’s return.

How Damian Lillard’s Return Will Improve The Trail Blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers are coming off a promising season. They faced plenty of problems, including an early-season coaching change. Tiago Splitter took over and led the Blazers to their first postseason appearance in five years. Now, they can keep building on their success in the 2026-27 campaign.

While the decision for the Blazers’ coach is still left in limbo, Lillard’s return is an exciting part of Portland’s future. He has been the franchise’s biggest star in the modern era, so his presence is quite welcome. Despite his prolonged absence, he should be able to help the Blazers when he takes the floor again.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBk3cI7jqU" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 1600px; aspect-ratio: 1600/1210;" ></smartframe-embed>

Lillard’s Return Is Most Impactful On Portland’s Offense

The Blazers had a good ’25-26 campaign because they relied on Deni Avdija‘s rise to stardom. At the same time, the Blazers improved their defense, thanks to Donovan Clingan and Toumani Camara serving as leaders. They have become much more well-rounded, which is a huge step in the right direction.

Unfortunately, Portland struggled on offense outside of Avdija, Shaedon Sharpe, and Jrue Holiday. Thankfully, getting Lillard back helps the Blazers because he is an offensive engine on his own. Of course, he will need to adjust after an Achilles injury, but he is ready to lead the charge.

"We had a great season, in my opinion… There were a lot of opportunities for us to fold and we didn't."- Damian Lillard

— Brenna Greene (@BrennaGreene_) April 30, 2026

Considering the Blazers had plenty of offensive issues, Lillard is a godsend. Not only did he score all the time when he was active, but he was also a high-level playmaker.

Now that he has better teammates around him, Lillard could generate higher-quality offense. He might be a bit older, but Portland’s future also involves some younger players like Scoot Henderson, who can learn a lot from Lillard and Holiday.

Lillard Will Be Ready To Help The Blazers’ Next Coach

Splitter did a wonderful job as the Blazers’ acting head coach. Now, he is one of the candidates to formally lead the team, but it looks unlikely based on reports. What is set in stone is that Lillard will be a big presence in the locker room.

Not only will he lead by words and example, but he will also be a valuable presence for the next head coach. Every coach needs someone who can lead the offense, and Portland has two veterans to do that.

Scoot on his fit with Dame: "I've been playing off the ball more. It'll be special to see how that pans out. Dame was one of my favorite players growing up. I used to play 2K and have 50 or 60 with him. It'll be special for Rip City to see that."

— Sean Highkin (@highkin) April 30, 2026

No matter who that coach will be, they can expect Lillard to be the focal point of the offense. Considering he will be playing with some talented players like Avdija and Sharpe, the offense could be much better in the 2027-28 season.

Lillard’s shooting will be a massive addition for this team. Depending on how General Manager Joe Cronin builds on this season, they could even add to that major weakness. Taking advantage of Avdija and Sharpe’s slashing can pay off whenever they have elite shooters like Lillard around.

Portland’s Future Is Brighter With Lillard’s Impact

Now that Lillard is ready to be Portland’s star player again, the future is even brighter than before. It will be an adjustment for most of the team, but it seems they have fostered a strong culture over the past year. Since Lillard has been in the locker room, he is quite familiar with how the team works now.

Sharpe and Jerami Grant are familiar faces, so he has natural chemistry with them. Clingan is the type of player Lillard thrived with during his first stint with the Blazers. Lastly, Avdija and Camara are the type of wings that Lillard loves playing alongside. The nine-time All-Star’s return has brought new life to the Blazers, and they should be a team that people are looking out for next season.

© Jaime Valdez-Imagn Images

Damian Lillard sat out the 2025-26 season after rupturing his Achilles tendon in the 2024 playoffs.
