After yet another heartbreaking loss, 127-126 in overtime, to the Charlotte Hornets, it has been a wake-up call for the team and president Pat Riley, who sharply addressed his retirement and future franchise strategy recently. As the roster heads into the offseason, upgrades will be targeted, and better options with big names like <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/antetgi01.html" List

The Heat are gearing up for aggressive offseason changes in the summer of 2026, as promised by Riley, with the roster standing the chance to see some promising new names around Adebayo in the upcoming season.

2026 NBA Draft

The Heat are expected to have the 13th overall pick in the soon-to-arrive 2026 NBA Draft. Their 13th seed has a 4.8% chance of making their top four<span circle around prospects like freshmen <a the current roster, who is also secured with a solid contract till 2028-29. The defense is strong with him, but the team is still in need of another scorer for playoff settings. The addition of talented players through the draft who provide strong defense and offer resistance could also assist.

The Heat have a 1.0% chance to win the NBA draft lottery on May 10. In the past, the Heat have never improved their position in the lottery, usually sticking to their usual prediction or falling off multiple times. This time, they will again be represented by team executive Alonzo Mourning, and on their heels, they are followed by the Charlotte Hornets at No. 14, who could gain up on them if they slip. Lots depend on that day, as this NBA Draft will provide a loose structure to the team, with careful selection lessening the scope for mistakes.

Riley has accepted that the NBA is upgrading with young and talented additions, and Miami needs to keep up with rising talent. Back in 2019, when the Heat finished 39-43 at the 10th spot, the team was quick to put in the work and wrapped the next season with a 44-29 record, bagging the 5th seed and heading as Eastern Conference champions to the NBA Finals. However, in the last three seasons, they haven’t had the same success. Bringing in young talent through the draft could get the franchise the push it needs to get back into contention.

Free Agency

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB2t78LCcB" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3000px; aspect-ratio: 3000/2148;" ></smartframe-embed>

As the NBA steps into the offseason, the Heat will have a bunch of free agents it could choose to retain based on their performances this season. Players like Powell, Trevor Keels, Andrew Wiggins, and Keshad Johnson are on the verge of free agency or restricted free agency. The Heat have a window till June 29 to make Keels a restricted free agent; if not secured by them, he will become unrestricted. If not offered an extension, then Powell will be enjoying the status of a free agent, though he has been a major supporting figure at this season’s beginning and contributed strongly with 39.6% shooting until injuries held him back.

Wiggins’ future depends on his decision, as he has the liberty to pick a $30.2 million offer till June for next season, or he could be a free agent. Johnson is also slated to be a restricted free agent if the team extended their offer of $2.7 million. The addition of top-notch talent is high on the agenda for the franchise, which, besides Antetokounmpo, is also said to be in pursuit of Kawhi Leonard or Donovan Mitchell, trading them in for weak links.

Guard Tyler Herro, alongside Adebayo, has maintained the offense this year, but the season was full of many absences due to injuries. No confirmation about his extension has been made yet. Forward Jaime Jaquez Jr., who finished second as the NBA Sixth Man of the Year, has improved his game and is also the leading face in NBA points off the bench. Pelle Larsson, who played in 70 games and had a breakout season and was a solid part of the rotation, is under a rookie contract with the window open to get an extension for another year. Davion Mitchell, who served as the best defender, is under contract for one more year.

For this season, their roster was full of seasoned players, yet they went down in front of the Hornets, who led with a young, less experienced roster. During his end-of-season press conference, Riley was clear about reevaluating every match, every performance of the team, taking strong measures to eliminate every hindrance, big or small, holding them back.

Additional Moves

Following these shake-ups, the Heat’s depth chart could look like this in 2026-27:

C: Kel’el Ware, Bam Adebayo

PF: Andrew Wiggins, Nikola Jovic

SF: Jamie Jaquez Jr.

SG: Tyler Herro, Pelle Larsson

PG: Davion Mitchell

Featured Image: Benny Sieu-Imagn Images

The Miami Heat ended their season with a disappointing finish, as for the first time in seven years, they missed the playoffs since 2019.
