Now it all comes down to a huge clash. The Thunder vs Lakers showdown is coming in hot. But what should fans expect heading into the West Semis featuring LeBron James and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander?

But there’s actually a whole lot more to expect in the coming battle. OKC is heading into the series as favorites, having swept LA for the whole season with massive margins of victory. But that doesn’t predict the series overall. In fact, there are high stakes for both teams heading into the clash.

Thunder vs Lakers Round 2 Preview: What’s at Stake?

The West Semis are as stacked as they can be. The Spurs-Wolves showdown has injected a very fun and competitive start. Now the expectations for the Thunder-Lakers series seem to be the same. However, given the history of these two teams, it seems we’re going to be locked in for a treat of impressive games to watch.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB3Qx5iMYq" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4688px; aspect-ratio: 4688/3126;" ></smartframe-embed>

The Last Time Thunder Vs Lakers Matchup Happened In The Playoffs…

The last time OKC faced the Lakers in the playoffs also happened to be in the West Semis. In 2012, Oklahoma City took down Los Angeles in five games, sending the late Kobe Bryant home in what became his final playoff series as well. That was capped by the iconic flip shot by Russell Westbrook in Game 5. It was the series that defined the Thunder as a contender in the NBA.

May 21, 2012: WCSF G5, The Russell Westbrook Flip Shot. pic.twitter.com/pYudt0R8Dl

— This Day In Sports Clips (@TDISportsClips) May 21, 2021

Coincidentally, it is also the same year that OKC played its first and only playoff series against James. It cannot be denied that there were glimpses of a rivalry that time, had the Thunder also made it to the NBA Finals in 2016. Now, it seems that fans are renewing that feeling, especially in coming up against the player who denied them their first title.

A lot of media personalities have picked OKC to win in this series, with most saying it would be over in five or six games at least.

Thunder Players To Watch Out For

With Jalen Williams out with a hamstring injury, Ajay Mitchell is definitely due for a starting role. He averaged 15 points, five rebounds, and 3.8 assists in the series against Phoenix, with the final two games being a starting role. Mitchell’s rise has been quite comparable to the 2012 version of James Harden, and now it seems that he’s getting his big chance to prove his worth.

In fact, Mitchell may well be a powerful weapon for OKC, given how he can easily blitz the Lakers’ defense and find buckets in the mid-range or the paint. He’s also got to find ways to create plays and generate assists for his teammates as J-Dub does, especially when SGA sits.

Isaiah Joe against LAL this season:

19.5 PPG
1.3 SPG
5.0 3PM
84.1% TS
4-0

What do you expect from him this series? pic.twitter.com/Oac7AvUui5

— Thunder Muse (@ThunderMuse_) May 3, 2026

Then there’s Isaiah Joe, who has averaged 19.5 points per game on 84.1% true shooting in all four games against Los Angeles. There are many critics who say that the Lakers can expose OKC’s lack of defensive coverage on open threes. But when the Thunder has its own weapons activated, they make you pay for it. Joe coming alive off the bench in this series is a crucial point in whether OKC dominates or not.

LeBron Legacy Watch In Thunder Vs Lakers

If there was ever a talk of James retiring, it’s definitely shelved for now. In this year’s playoffs, the King is averaging 23.2 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.2 rebounds in six games. That’s a massive stat line for a 41-year-old, let alone LeBron. The fact that he’s able to come up with big games against Houston is just impressive.

However, remember that James has played in only two games vs OKC this season. He averaged 17.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists. In fact, you could consider him the only positive that the Lakers had in all those games they played against the defending champs. Expect him to pop off with Luka Doncic out and maybe Austin Reaves not playing at a higher level due to an injury.

LAKERS VS. THUNDER IN ROUND TWO 🍿

The King challenges SGA's reign in OKC ⛈️ pic.twitter.com/7Mp9H2Yoju

— ESPN (@espn) May 2, 2026

However, there’s just one thing about NBA legends playing against OKC. Bryant played against the Thunder in 2012, and that was his final playoff series; he later retired in 2016. OKC also eliminated Dirk Nowitzki in 2016, then Tim Duncan in the next round after that. With this, you can expect that there will be a lot of talk about James potentially retiring if the Lakers drop this series.

Thunder Defense Will Suffocate Lakers

What most fans don’t realize is that Houston is a bad team overall — and definitely leagues behind the Thunder. The Lakers have the most turnovers in this year’s playoffs at 17.7 per game, and they were playing against a poor defensive team in Houston. Matching up against an OKC team that has the best defensive rating for the whole season shouldn’t be ignored at all.

With Los Angeles missing one key scorer in the series, it goes without saying that OKC has one less player to worry about on the defensive end. That said, Cason Wallace, Lu Dort, and Alex Caruso all get strong defensive stops in this series to corral the Lakers’ passing lanes. It also doesn’t help that SGA is a massive defender in his own, and Chet Holmgren manning the middle with Isaiah Hartenstein seals off LA down low.

Playoff Turnover Rate…

What stands out? pic.twitter.com/HxrKmbby2I

— Basketball University (@UofBasketball) April 28, 2026

If anything, the only thing the Lakers can try to maximize is their three-point shooting. Everyone’s well aware of OKC’s lone flaw on their defense, but it is so hard to do that when they cut off the passing lanes to begin with. Expect Oklahoma City to harass Los Angeles for most of their possessions and force plenty of turnovers at a historic rate.

Thunder Vs Lakers: The Last Word

By now, it is safe to say that SGA and the Thunder would likely be dominating the series. Given that neither Doncic nor Williams will be back for each squad, it does seem like OKC would be winning this one well. In fact, some critics say that Oklahoma City taking more than five games to take out the Lakers is already an embarrassing thing to begin with.

But then again, it’s the playoffs. The Lakers have defied the odds with their series win against Houston. Oklahoma City should not take this one lightly. Whether it would be the final playoff series for James with a Thunder win, or another historic, odd-beating finish for LA, it’s one you should not miss.

Featured Image: Mark J.
