He set not only franchise history but league history with 12 blocks in one playoff game. Almost every shot taken near him was swatted away. He helped to set the tone for this sure-to-be defensive-focused series.

Victor Wembanyama Breaks Historic Record In 4th Playoff Game

Wembanyama Already Measures Up As An All-Time Great Defender

After achieving the first unanimous DPOY, Wemby adds another one-of-one accolade to his collection. Wembanyama surpassed the previous record of ten blocks in a playoff game, held by multiple players. By passing those players, he also passes Tim Duncan, who had nine. This performance caps off a year where Wemby actually averaged his fewest blocks per game. He was five blocks behind tying for the most blocks in a single game.

Wemby’s paint dominance is comparable to almost any NBA legend. He displayed this by blocking shots from centers, forwards, and guards in his first game against the Wolves. He is also reminiscent of old-school big men, with his tendency to block shots into the hands of his teammates for easy rebounds. Wembanyama also has an impressive wingspan, leading him to be able to block shots from outside the paint.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBeSKFfKHO" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072/2048;" ></smartframe-embed>

The Spurs Let Themselves Down On A Historic Night

San Antonio lost to the T-Wolves 102-104. The Wolves took their largest lead of the game with only a few minutes left. The Spurs rallied back but were unable to sink the game-winning shot. Young star Stephon Castle fouled out, adding to their late struggles. Players failed to box out, and shot-taking was questionable for a lot of the game. The Spurs also turned the ball over at a concerningly high rate. You may be thinking the team let Wemby down on his big night, but think again.

Wembanyama shot zero for eight from three-point land in the contest. He finished with only 11 points on poor shooting. Worst of all, he was an obstacle for his teammates and clearly slowed down a struggling offense. Although his impact on the game was still positive, more should be expected for the best player on a team in contention. The fact that the team could not capitalize on such a strong night defensively should be a wake-up call for the Spurs.

What Is Next For The Spurs?

San Antonio was without the talents of Carter Bryant. Bryant, the rookie forward, had the size and defensive skills to help his team out, as well as athleticism for fast breaks. Bryant was questionable and could return for the next game. If he does not play, the Spurs need to consider letting Harrison Barnes play more minutes. His shooting and size could shift the game two places the Spurs lost: rebounds and shooting. The Spurs got outrebounded and shot abysmally from three. The biggest change needs to be with Wembanyama. As great as he was, he needs to find his place on the offense once more if he wants to win.

Featured Image: Daniel Dunn-Imagn Images

At only twenty-two years of age, Victor Wembanyama has set a historic defensive feat against the Minnesota Timberwolves after defeating the Portland Trail Blazers in round one.
