As the Lakers head into the second round against the defending champion Thunder, it seems <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won\u2019t be the only one required to set the tone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Locked In&#8217; Deandre Ayton Vital for Lakers&#8217; Second Round Hopes<\/h2>\n<h3>\u201cGet Every Damn Rebound\u201d<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The eighth-year big man was responsible for nearly a third of LA\u201ds 54 rebounds Friday night, displaying aggression and activity that wasn\u2019t always present in the regular season. After the Lakers\u2019 win, Ayton <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LALMuse\/status\/2050479366631518279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outlined his mentality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou have to match their physicality in a way where it\u2019s contagious to your teammates as well. I just tried to play as I am, the biggest dude on the court, and just go and get every damn rebound. \u2026 When there were switches, I took advantage of the glass, and when I\u2019m in pick and roll, I had position to box out and grab an O-board as well. It was just things I was really picking out throughout the series of where I could really affect the game if I couldn\u2019t score.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayton\u2019s success beyond scoring was evident in the back half of the series. Through Games 4, 5 and 6, he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/UnderdogNBA\/status\/2050433895972085885\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">averaged<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14.7 points, 14.3 rebounds<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and one block on 62.5% shooting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His defense on two-time All-Star <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sengual01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alperen Sengun<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was just as impressive. Throughout the series, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iztok_franko\/status\/2050527662288826715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayton held Sengun to 13-35 shooting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the field (37%), forcing a 20-point-per-game scorer into botched layups or awkward turnaround jumpers.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cJJ really challenged me about guarding Sengun one-on-one \u2026 We just wanted to go back on how we guarded them if KD were out there. He kept his composure, and he really set the tone for us on the defensive end. It allowed me to do what I do, and everybody else to galvanize, come together, and do our thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart also revealed Ayton\u2019s bold message to the team: \u201cWait \u2018til I get to the playoffs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a different side of him that fans haven\u2019t seen, that we expect, that we know he can give. He knows it, and he\u2019s ready. \u2026 He\u2019s huge, man. I have nothing more to say. I could sit here and talk all day about DA. I love him, I\u2019m proud of him, and I\u2019m proud to see that he\u2019s finally getting that confidence that he\u2019s been looking for and playing very well.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Ayton Must Right the Ship as Lakers Battle Thunder<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the Lakers once again being written off in the postseason, the team must lean on the same skills and mentality that allowed them to survive Houston\u2019s comeback attempt. Ayton needs to stay hungry heading into Paycom Center against OKC\u2019s standout bigs, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holmgch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chet Holmgren<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harteis01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah Hartenstein<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In their first-round sweep over Phoenix, Holmgren averaged 17.3 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game, while Hartenstein put up 11.0 points and 8.3 rebounds\u2014including 4.5 on the offensive end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the regular-season series, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask?q=deandre+ayton+stats+vs+thunder+2025-26\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thunder limited Ayton<\/a> to 5.8 points and 4.8 rebounds on 52.4% shooting. But after gaining momentum in the playoffs, he should be chomping at the bit to prove doubters wrong and help the Lakers make a statement. Limiting two 7-footers who grab boards for breakfast is a tall task.
