With Scoot Henderson‘s performance and Shaedon Sharpe‘s potential, the Blazers still have promise.

The Blazers’ Postseason Needs More Henderson And Sharpe

After a 42-40 regular season, the Portland Trail Blazers are now playing in a series against the San Antonio Spurs. This is a massive return to the postseason after five years. However, it is hard to gauge their chances of beating the Spurs because of San Antonio’s team.

That was evident in Game 1 of the first-round series between the two teams. Victor Wembanyama proved he is a superstar with his fantastic debut performance. However, the Blazers did have some flashes, proving they could keep up with the Spurs. Deni Avdija was the star of the show for Portland, but other players stepped up as well.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBgwmEWKm9" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072/2161;" ></smartframe-embed>

The Blazers’ Postseason Goals Should Not Hinge On Avdija Alone

Avdija played his first postseason game in Game 1, and he was hanging around with Wembanyama. The Blazers’ All-Star forward finished with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. It was a remarkable night for him, but it is clear that the Blazers need more players to step up.

Most NBA fans would expect that from veteran guard and two-time champion Jrue Holiday. Unfortunately for Portland, Holiday did not have a good night on Sunday. He did dish out 11 assists, but he was horrible with his scoring. Holiday shot 4-for-15 from the field, scoring only nine points.

Jrue Holiday tonight:

9 PTS
4/15 FGM (26.7%)
1/7 3FG

CUE THE MUSIC‼️pic.twitter.com/dBKk5OBzut

— NBA Tour Dates (@NBATourDates) April 20, 2026

The Blazers can have a much higher ceiling when the ball is moving, and everyone is contributing. That was not the case against the Spurs because it felt that Avdija was the only player trying at times.

Of course, that was not the case for the whole game because there were some players who were trying hard. This includes Scoot Henderson, who was brilliant, especially early in the third quarter. They managed to cut the lead to only a one-possession game, but turnovers kept killing the Blazers.

Henderson’s Performance Showed Flashes Of Brilliance

Ever since Henderson returned to the Blazers’ active squad, he has done a great job of contributing. His return in early February made Portland’s offense much more dynamic, but unfortunately, that is not enough. His speed and willingness to drive helped the Blazers against the Spurs.

Considering Wembanyama’s presence intimidates almost every player who dares to go into the paint, Henderson’s performance was refreshing. He was quite aggressive in that run in the third quarter. They almost managed to take the lead, but Portland’s season-long turnover problems continued.

Scoot Henderson 18 PTS, 3 REB, 3 AST, 1 STL, 7/11 FG, 2/4 3FG, 75.8% TS vs Spurs pic.twitter.com/tJunHT6SXd https://t.co/P3gJYdx07h

— Basketball Performances (@NBAPerformances) April 20, 2026

Acting head coach Tiago Splitter has vowed to solve those turnover issues. Unfortunately, that work has not bled into the games. The Blazers could have made some noise in this game, but they continue to be their worst enemies. The turnovers killed their momentum, eventually leading to San Antonio dominating the game.

If Splitter trusts Henderson more, that could be much better for Portland. Holiday proved that he might struggle against the Spurs, while Henderson shone. By giving Henderson more minutes, it might be best for Portland because he can play well against the Spurs.

Portland’s Offense Still Needs Some Work

Apart from Henderson, the Blazers have more weapons on the roster. One being Sharpe, who only played 22 minutes on Sunday. Despite that, he did show some potential with his contributions to Portland’s offense. He brings unique athleticism and shot-making, which the Blazers desperately need.

To resolve some of the issues with Portland’s offense, playing Henderson and Sharpe together can be helpful. They both have elite athleticism, and they have proven to be good shot-makers. With that combination, they can catch the Spurs’ defense off guard.

It is challenging to find the right mix in the playoffs, especially against this Spurs team. However, Game 1 proved that Portland has more weapons than most people give them credit for. While Avdija will always do his best to perform, he has young teammates in Henderson and Sharpe who can contribute.

Ultimately, it will be up to Splitter, but everyone can see that Portland’s offense needs work. If they want to resolve that issue, choosing Henderson and Sharpe is the boost they need to steal a game.

Featured Image: Scott Wachter-Imagn Images

The Portland Trail Blazers’ postseason run got off on the wrong foot in Game 1.
