Despite many injuries this season, Oklahoma City remains at the top of the NBA world. However, some are skeptical of whether they can retain the same pace from last year’s title run. In fact, one of their star players may not be at full strength. With plenty of absences, many are wondering if Jalen Williams‘ injury may prevent him from having elite postseason performances.

J-Dub missed 49 games in 2025-26. After recovering from offseason wrist surgery, he made his season debut in November before injuring his hamstring in January — the first of two strains before the All-Star break. Williams then came back in late March, and while he showed some glimpses of his All-NBA self, he also struggled at times.

Will Jalen Williams’ Injury Affect His Playoff Performance?

That being said, J-Dub still has a lot to work out in his game. His last six appearances were a mixed bag, but definitely more on the good side. There’s more to expect from the star guard as OKC steps into another playoff run. After all, they wouldn’t have won their first title without him, and they certainly won’t repeat with him playing inconsistently.

Williams’ Playoff Inconsistency

Consistency has been a key issue for Williams in the postseason. Sure, he was superb in the first round against Memphis, but a bit average against Denver. We saw him struggling from time to time, even having three of his worst shooting games in that series. But just as OKC never lost consecutive playoff games, Williams also showed he could bounce back.

In that series, there were plenty of criticisms thrown his way. And yet on the biggest stage, J-Dub was rocking the rim and scoring buckets. The same can be said in the NBA Finals, where he went off for 40 points in Game 5.

Jalen Williams 40 PTS, 6 REB, 4 AST, 1 STL, 14/25 FG vs Indiana (2025, Finals Game 5)

pic.twitter.com/LFGY4dXSmW

— Playoff Performances (@plfperformances) April 10, 2026

And after all that, OKC revealed he had a wrist injury for the whole playoff run. For one to sacrifice that much for a title run is definitely selfless. Williams is proving that he’s willing to do everything for the team. And when it comes to reducing his minutes, he may not have qualms about that, either. Considering the depth of this Thunder team, bringing in the likes of Cason Wallace, Ajay Mitchell, Isaiah Joe, Jared McCain, and Aaron Wiggins could make up for his struggles.

A Deja Vu of Injuries?

Last season, Chet Holmgren missed 50 games due to a pelvic injury. He sat out most of the previous season before coming back and playing in the final 22 games for OKC. In that span, it was Shai Gilgeous-Alexander carrying the load along with Williams. It was the best Thunder season ever, and Holmgren ended up being a key player in the postseason.

All time hilarious possession pic.twitter.com/hpSjPV2GCT

— 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒆 🌩 (@Three_Cone) April 9, 2026

Flashing forward to the present, Williams didn’t play in nearly the same number of games. Much like Holmgren last season, J-Dub was hurt for many contests. Sure, several players went down this season, but everyone got healthy at the perfect time.

Holmgren was crucial for the Thunder in the playoffs. His defense was astounding, and he has proven he deserves more respect. The same can be said for J-Dub, who has been quietly getting back into his groove so far.

J-Dub is Playoff-Ready

Towards the end of the season, most players are usually complaining about fatigue. Williams, however, has had nearly the same amount of rest that Holmgren did last season. He’s played fewer games than both SGA and Holmgren, meaning he’s got to have fresher legs at this point.

Jalen Williams on how he physically feels heading into the playoffs: “I feel extremely fresh because I played like 12 games.” pic.twitter.com/U0PtU7KNms

— Clemente Almanza (@CAlmanza1007) April 14, 2026

If you don’t believe it, just think about both Chris Youngblood and McCain playing more games than him this season. In fact, two-way big Branden Carlson has 42 games to his belt, and even rookie Brooks Barnhizer has more at 40. When it comes to minutes, J-Dub is at 11th overall with 936 this season. For context, McCain came swinging into OKC at the deadline and had 540 minutes overall.

Williams’ injury may not be a relevant issue at this point. He is gearing up for one of the biggest runs in his career. The fact that he’s recovering well and entering the postseason without any signs of injury is a win for the team. After all, the Thunder need all hands on deck if they’re going to repeat as champions.

© Bill Streicher-Imagn Images

The defending champion Thunder are heading into the playoffs as the favorites to repeat.
