The 22-year-old signed a two-year deal with LA in February. However, he had inconsistent reps despite the team\u2019s injury crisis\u2014particularly with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2026\/04\/06\/luka-doncic-expedite-lakers-return-injury-update\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">absences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luka Doncic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In 7.4 minutes across 16 games (one start), Bufkin averaged 2.9 points, 0.8 rebounds and 0.6 assists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With one roster spot open ahead of the Lakers\u2019 postseason run, two possible candidates are right under their noses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Lakers Have Two Prime Candidates to Replace Kobe Bufkin<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head coach JJ Redick said he wanted players who\u2019d be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/jj-redick-focused-on-finding-players-that-are-all-in-on-fighting-for-lakers-in-playoffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201call-in\u201d for the postseason<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Luckily for him, two other young standouts may fit the bill perfectly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Nick Smith Jr.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coming off a garbage time heater against Golden State, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithni01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nick Smith Jr.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reminded Laker Nation why he\u2019s a positive asset to the purple and gold. In 11 minutes of action Thursday, Smith scored 12 points on 4-5 shooting from three\u2014all of his buckets coming from fourth-quarter target practice. That followed a modest 11-point outing in LA\u2019s Tuesday loss to the OKC Thunder, where he went 4-6 from the field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/11\/05\/lakers-two-way-nick-smith-jr-breakout-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breakout game in November<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a decent stretch in December, Smith Jr. largely became an afterthought in LA. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kennalu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luke Kennard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has unexpectedly become <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2026\/04\/06\/lakers-decision-on-luke-kennard-just-got-a-massive-reality-check-after-first-career-triple-double\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the Lakers\u2019 primary facilitators<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/laravja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jake LaRavia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has re-emerged as a solid guard\/wing hybrid, their promotion to the first five has left the bench bereft of ball handlers\u2014a role Smith Jr. could easily fill. The 6\u20192\u201d guard has started to prove his worth to Lakers coaches and fans. Giving him a true shot in time for the postseason seems like a worthy move.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: 800px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOB3GM6S8lW\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072\/2060;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<h3>Drew Timme<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the Lakers\u2019 frontcourt faces just as much uncertainty, second-year forward <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/timmedr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drew Timme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has admirably answered the call. Like Smith Jr., Timme was productive in Tuesday\u2019s loss to the Thunder, which also marked his first start of the season. He put up 11 points (4-9 FG, 2-4 3PT), three rebounds and two assists in 26 minutes\u2014doing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kunmie9000\/status\/2041721138280055269\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most of his damage in the first quarter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Timme has become a pleasant surprise as a playmaking stretch big.
