The Boston Celtics, meanwhile, have their own priorities. They are second in the conference at 53-25 and desperate to maintain their lead over the New York Knicks for home court advantage. Both teams need this win, but for very different reasons.

This is the third and final meeting of the season between these teams, with the series tied at 1-1. Their most recent clash ended 114-99 in Boston’s favor on March 29. Tuesday is Charlotte’s chance at redemption, and Miles Bridges made clear exactly what the mindset is heading into this game. “Physicality,” he said. “We came into their place and beat them. They came into our place and beat us. So we want to return the favor and start getting ready for the playoffs.”

Boston’s Season

When Jayson Tatum ruptured his Achilles in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals last May, few gave the Celtics a chance of being relevant this season. On top of losing their franchise star, they also parted with Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday over the summer. A rebuilding year seemed inevitable. Instead, Jaylen Brown put the team on his back and delivered one of the most impressive individual seasons in recent Celtics history, averaging 28.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists. Furthermore, Tatum himself made his improbable return in March, averaging 21.5 points, 10.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists across his 14 games back. The Celtics beat all expectations, and they are not done yet.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBqEtynWMb" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072/2048;" ></smartframe-embed>

Statistically, Boston is one of the most well-rounded teams in the league. They carry the second-best offense in the NBA and the fourth-best defense, making them exceptionally difficult to beat. They also commit the fewest turnovers in the league at just 12.3 per game, which forces opponents to earn every stop. Opponents shoot just 36.0% on three-pointers against them, a number that will concern Charlotte, one of the most prolific three-point shooting teams in the league this season. In addition, Nikola Vucevic recently returned from a finger injury, giving Boston additional frontcourt depth at precisely the right moment.

Charlotte’s Push

The Hornets enter TD Garden with something to prove and everything to play for. They currently sit eighth in the East at 43-36, but the standings remain fluid. They could climb as high as sixth or drop as low as tenth depending on how the final games play out. Given that context, this game carries considerably more weight for Charlotte than it does for Boston. The Hornets are two games behind the fifth-place Atlanta Hawks. A win in Boston would send a statement that this team belongs in the conversation for the playoffs instead of the play-in.

What makes Charlotte so dangerous is their three-point shooting. They rank second in three-point attempts with 43.1 per game and third in percentage at 38.1%. On a good night, they can outshoot any team in the NBA. Their off-ball movement and constant screening actions make them one of the hardest offenses to guard consistently. Notably, Charlotte also boasts the fourth-best road record in the East, proving they can perform away from Spectrum Center.

Nevertheless, the challenge is significant. Boston’s tight on-ball defense and low turnover rate will force Charlotte to work extremely hard for every basket. The Hornets average 14.4 turnovers per game; against a Celtics side that plays intelligent, disciplined basketball, those giveaways could prove costly. If LaMelo Ball and Kon Knueppel can stay sharp with the ball and get into their rhythm from three, the Hornets have the offensive quality to make this a real contest.

Injuries

Celtics: N/A

Charlotte Hornets: PJ Hall (ankle fracture) is out, and Coby White (left groin soreness) is probable.

Prediction

In the Celtics vs Hornets game, Boston is the clear favorite and with good reason. The Celtics’ depth and defensive intelligence, along with Brown’s elite scoring, give them the edge in almost every area. Tatum’s presence adds another dimension that Charlotte simply cannot replicate. Still, this Charlotte team has beaten the Celtics at home this season, and they arrive on the back of four straight wins with momentum firmly on their side.

The key factor in this clash is motivation. The Celtics need to protect second place and home court. The Hornets need a win that could define their seeding and prepare them for what comes next. As Bridges said, this game is about getting ready for the playoffs, and that hunger could keep Charlotte in this longer than Boston would like.

Pick: Over 217.5

Tip-off: Tuesday, April 8, 7:30 p.m. EST

© Brian Westerholt-Imagn Images

Tuesday’s Celtics vs Hornets matchup at TD Garden is a fitting way to highlight one of the most remarkable stories in the NBA this season.
