The month sports fanatics love. The annual finale of March Madness, the beginning of another MLB season, the NFL Draft, the NBA playoffs, and so much more. For the Toronto Raptors, it’s a matter of life or death for their 43-win season, and after Sunday’s loss to the commanding Boston Celtics, the stakes couldn’t be any higher.

The squad is currently sitting at sixth in the talented Eastern Conference after the Philadelphia 76ers fell to the San Antonio Spurs. It’s hard to argue where the team is heading; however, we know their upcoming contest against the Miami Heat matters significantly. Here are three factors that could determine Toronto’s fate.

Three Keys to Triumph: Toronto Raptors vs Miami Heat

Quickley’s Awaited Return

Since Immanuel Quickley‘s last appearance on March 22 against the Phoenix Suns, the Raptors have struggled to find a consistent floor general. Without Quickley, the team’s offensive rating has fluctuated, going as low at 98.9 against the Clippers and as high as 132.4 against the Magic.

According to SN’s Blake Murphy (via X), Quickley “is questionable for Tuesday, following a few days of testing out his plantar fasciitis.” If Quickley can return to the hardwood for Toronto today against Miami, that would help the team significantly and add momentum to their playoff push.

Get Ingram More Involved Offensively

Brandon Ingram has been a major factor in the Raptors’ 43-win season. However, injuries have also affected his sudden drop off. Ingram’s most recent ailment is (right) heel inflammation, and it seems to still be affecting him. On Sunday against Boston, he had three points in the first half and finished with a quiet 15 points and four assists. If BI can get back to the 20-point threshold, especially tonight against the Heat, that would be huge for the Raptors.

We know Ingram dominates in the mid-range, though Miami holds an average defensive rating of 114.2, ranking 11th in the league. This presents a challenge for Ingram and will require him not to force shots, but to create open looks for teammates near the perimeter.

Reduce Turnovers

The Heat are sixth in the league when it comes to scoring off turnovers (19.8 points per game). We’ve seen how detrimental Toronto’s mistakes can be. When Scottie Barnes or Ingram gets trapped in the corner or near half court, this forces a Heat fast break, leading to easy points.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9" image-id="fwuQ6FNFmwwt" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3900px; aspect-ratio: 3900/2700;" ></smartframe-embed>

To reduce this element, players should use Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic’s 0.5 second rule, where a ball-handler makes a decision within half a second of the first touch. If the ball finds its way to multiple players during a possession, passing lanes stay open. The Raptors average 13.7 turnovers on the season. On Sunday at TD Garden, they produced 15 and lost in embarrassing fashion.

At the end of the day, this game will impact the standings if Toronto cannot find a way to win. The good news, though, is this is the first of a two-game mini series against Miami.

Score Prediction: Toronto – 108, Miami – 99

© Rhona Wise-Imagn Images

April.
