Over the past year, the NBA world witnessed many career-altering injuries to its biggest stars. Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving<\/a> suffered a torn ACL<\/a> in March 2025. In that same postseason, Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard<\/a> –then a member of the Milwaukee Bucks —tore his Achilles tendon<\/a>. Only having recently come back<\/a> from injury, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum<\/a> tore his Achilles tendon in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Then, Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton<\/a> tore his Achilles tendon in Game 7 of the NBA Finals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

These injuries decimated the championship aspirations of those players and their teams. Similarly, the injury status of a certain Eastern Conference<\/a> superstar remains unclear, as does his franchise’s intentions.<\/p>\n

Are The Milwaukee Bucks Holding Giannis Antetokounmpo Hostage?<\/h2>\n

Salt On The Wound?<\/h3>\n

Partly due to his own unavailability, this past NBA season has undoubtedly been one of\u00a0Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/a>‘s <\/span>toughest yet. Injuries are the main reason why the two-time MVP has missed so many games. A knee hyperextension, a bone bruise, and multiple calf strains have contributed to him playing just 36 games this season.<\/p>\n

However, Antetokounmpo has been telling the media that he’s healthy and ready to play<\/a>. That sitting out is “against [his] nature.”<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know who you are dealing with. So for somebody to come and tell me to not play or not to compete, it\u2019s like a slap in my face. So, I don\u2019t know where the relationship goes from there. I\u2019ve never seen a case of a player saying, my caliber of player, that\u2019s like \u2014 I\u2019m saying it publicly \u2014 I want to f\u2014ing play. You know what I\u2019m saying? I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve seen this. So, if there needs to be an investigation, great. There should be. I don\u2019t know. There should be. Despite this, he’s yet to see the floor for Milwaukee since he went down with a hyperextended left knee during a March 15 win over the Indiana Pacers.<\/p>\n

The NBA Investigation<\/h3>\n

The league is currently investigating the matter. In a recent statement, an NBA spokesperson noted that “certain facts remain in dispute” (h\/t Steve Megargee of The Associated Press):<\/p>\n

\u201cT<\/span>he NBA\u2019s Player Participation Policy investigation into the Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo is ongoing and certain facts remain in dispute… The investigation has found that the Bucks scheduled Giannis to work out last week in three-on-three scrimmages as part of his return-to-play process, but he declined to participate. There is a disagreement as to whether the team requested that Giannis participate in a group workout earlier this week, and the league is continuing to monitor the situation.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The NBA is currently engaged in conversations with the Bucks.<\/p>\n

Foul Play?<\/h3>\n

Antetokounmpo’s own statements may not be the only evidence he’s healthy enough to play. Others have suggested that the Bucks organization is keeping the star power forward off the hardwood as well.<\/p>\n

According to a statement released by the NBPA in late March, Antetokounmpo is “healthy and ready to play<\/a>” (h\/t ESPN’s Shams Charania). The insinuation is that he’s being withheld from playing games as part of a tanking effort by the Bucks. Keeping that in mind, the Bucks allegedly approached Antetokounmpo with a proposal for him not to play for the remainder of the season. However, the Greek superstar rejected that idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had an initial conversation with who I should be talking to, which is coach Doc (Rivers) \u2014 let\u2019s just keep it at Coach Doc and (general manager) Jon (Horst) \u2014 and the initial conversation is that I want to play. And after that, I\u2019ve never had a conversation again. Nobody has ever approached me (about) not playing or whatever the plan is.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to Antetokounmpo, no one in the Bucks organization has approached him about when he would play since then.<\/p>\n
