With the first seed nearly in their grasp, there are other problems worth worrying about. As the season winds to a close, OKC needs to figure out its final rotation. But which Thunder bench player deserves more minutes?

We all know how deep and talented this roster can be, but not everyone can play 30 minutes per game. This is what makes Oklahoma City a dangerous opponent to face. Their flexibility and willingness to let each other shine are a start. But the way they blend, no matter who sits and plays, is just mind-boggling.

As the best team in the NBA, there’s a certain set of expectations for the Thunder. The OKC bench, for starters, is a notable piece of the team that completed the puzzle last season. Now that there’s a new playoff push coming in, fans are keen to know who gets to play more and who will make an impact in the coming games. It’s a new race to the top of the NBA world, and Oklahoma City wants to make history with the hopes of a repeat.

Which Thunder Bench Player Deserves More Minutes?

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault is still figuring out his rotation this late into the season. Of course, it’s easy to expect that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and Jalen Williams would be getting the most of the playing time available. However, we would have to consider a few tweaks for both Isaiah Hartenstein and Lu Dort, who are starting to get back to their consistent form. Still, a huge question mark looms over Daigneault’s elite bench that has been incredibly worth praising this season.

So, which Thunder bench player will get to shine on the big stage regularly?

1. Ajay Mitchell

For what it’s worth, Ajay Mitchell would have been the Sixth Man of the Year had it not been for his injuries. This season, he is averaging 13.9 points, 3.6 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per game, a huge leap from his rookie year. Mitchell has been a revelation so far. In fact, the Santa Barbara product is one of the most efficient players in the squad. If you’re not impressed, you may be shocked to learn that he is OKC’s third-leading scorer so far, even with only 54 games played.

Ajay Mitchell has posted the second-best defensive field goal percentage among NBA sophomores this season.

1) Ariel Hukporti — 38.5%
2) Ajay Mitchell — 40.1%
3) Yves Missi — 42.9%
4) Jaylen Clark — 43.3%
5) Stephon Castle — 43.9%
T5) Karlo Matkovic —… pic.twitter.com/YWTcD1w4s1

— SleeperThunder (@SleeperThunder) March 29, 2026

This says a lot about Mitchell’s emerging role within the roster. After all, it’s been a while since they’ve had a truly remarkable sixth man since James Harden in 2012. Now, it seems the sophomore guard will see a lot of playoff action as the Thunder will need more of his production. As we’ve seen this season, Mitchell has provided an additional spark for the squad with his ability to drive and create plays inside the paint. In fact, he is capable of drawing a lot of defenders in the paint and coming up with an acrobatic finish. That’s a promising skill to look out for, especially if the Thunder end up facing notable shot-blockers like Victor Wembanyama.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9" image-id="fwuQBsLPZ6DC" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3900px; aspect-ratio: 3900/2700;" ></smartframe-embed>

2. As one of only three players to shoot above 40% from three for OKC, Joe is definitely getting more minutes to provide the hot shooting they need. It cannot be denied that three-point shooting is a big weakness for the Thunder. With Joe shooting the lights out, he will play a vital role in helping them thrive in games. As a threat from deep, Joe can space the floor and keep defenders close to him on the wing, drawing them away from cutting teammates.

Isaiah Joe 20 PTS, 1 STL, 6/8 3PT, 0 TOVs, 111% TS on 7/9 FG vs Lakers

Only 13 minutes played 😳 pic.twitter.com/xFClaH60Df https://t.co/RmRr3wYa1C

— NBA Performances (@NBARewinds) April 3, 2026

Oklahoma City is not a great three-point shooting team, sure. But when you combine the Thunder’s defense with excellent shooting, now that’s a recipe for success. After all, Joe has been at his best in the second half of the season. Whether he brings it into the playoff stage is a big question, but Joe will play a huge role in OKC’s success.

3. Alex Caruso

Speaking of the OKC bench’s defense, Alex Caruso is the first who will come to mind for fans and critics. Caruso shut down Nikola Jokic in a crucial Game 7 of the West Semis last year. While he may not be the most explosive scorer among the players on this list, defense is his main contribution. You can expect him to come up in the closing possessions of a tight game. We have seen SGA trust Caruso in crucial moments, often taking a corner three.

Alex Caruso can lock up both Jokic and Wemby as a 6’5” guard LMFAO

— 🌩️ (@twowayshai) December 14, 2025

Caruso has missed a huge chunk of the season as well. We all know how he’s leading the steals department this season. His raging game is highly underrated. Had it not been for Wemby and Chet’s antics, Wallace may have been at the top of that list. His ability to wreak havoc on defense is a boon for OKC. The fact that he’s still young makes it even better, meaning he can improve a lot of things in his game.

Cason Wallace, guaranteed to give ball handlers a really REALLY unplesent evening…

Non-stop low-mistake pressure defense wins titles. He turns opponents’ mistakes into easy buckets. The fact that Wallace can sprint for a layup is quite promising. His offensive capabilities are the cherry on top of his strong defense, which the Thunder value. Considering how he’s grown year after year, it’s easy to expect him to thrive again.

5. Jared McCain

After coming to Oklahoma City at the trade deadline, Jared McCain continues to prove his worth. A meager reserve in Philadelphia turning into a productive scorer in OKC was not in anyone’s cards. Just like Joe, McCain is one of the Thunder’s prolific shooters. Since moving to the Thunder, he has been averaging 10.7 points in 25 games, along with a massive 40.2% shooting from three.

McCain is showing why he has more value than most people think. Some critics even recognize him as another trade steal for the Thunder, much like how SGA and Caruso have been so far.

JARED MCCAIN DOES THIS pic.twitter.com/Mp6nQ2vHS3

— 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒆 🌩 (@Three_Cone) March 15, 2026

McCain’s ability to shoot is undoubtedly big for the defending champs. He’s playing the most minutes of his career at 18.2 minutes per game, rivaling his rookie season. The Thunder’s need for a spot-up shooter (aside from Joe) is met through him. McCain is also good at slashing through the paint — with or without the ball. That makes the rest of the team’s jobs easier and more flexible. If anything, McCain is showing why he deserves minutes and how much more trust Daigneault is putting in him moving forward.

Honorable Mention: Jaylin Williams and Aaron Wiggins

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://lastwordonsports.com/basketball/wp-content/uploads/sites/9/2026/03/USATSI_28451148_168402037_lowres-1024x683.jpg" alt="Mar 9, 2026; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA; Oklahoma City Thunder forward Jaylin Williams (6) is fouled by Denver Nuggets guard/forward Tim Hardaway Jr. (10) as he shoots during the second half at Paycom Center.
