Losing their top two players has forced the Lakers to endure their biggest \u201cnext man up\u201d test yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though several key contributors could take up the mantle with <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, could the teams\u2019 2024 draft picks get meaningful minutes as well?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>With Doncic and Reaves Down, Could Lakers Sophomores Step Up?<\/h2>\n<h3>Bronny James<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the most scrutinized players outside of the big three, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesbr02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bronny James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/lakers-analysis\/112292\/lakers-bronny-james-nets-lebron-assist-recap-pacers-jj-redick?utm_campaign=dhtwitter&amp;utm_content=%3Cmedia_url%3E&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earned the trust of the Lakers\u2019 coaching staff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014whether fans like it or not. The team\u2019s recent stretch without <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smartma01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcus Smart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ankle) has forced James Jr. to enter the rotation. And while the numbers don\u2019t always show it (2.4 points, 1.1 assists in 37 games), he has developed well in year two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James has made a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Underdog\/status\/2038077772585992538\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tangible impact with LA\u2019s G League affiliate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the South Bay Lakers, and he is bringing the same two-way mentality to his time in the NBA. Thursday\u2019s game against OKC was his best scoring performance <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask\/bronny-james-stats-since-march-22-2026\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Smart\u2019s absence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; he tallied 10 points on 4-8 shooting from the field (2-4 3PT) in 18 minutes. Beyond that, he has hit timely shots to settle the Lakers\u2019 offense against subpar opponents and given the backcourt some life amid another injury-riddled period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The absences of Doncic, Reaves and Smart could be a blessing in disguise for Bronny, who\u2019s <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7148215\/2026\/03\/26\/lebron-james-lakers-depth-chart-rotation-bronny\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continuing to live out his dream<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after various setbacks along the way. He adds solid athleticism, shot creation and defense to the Lakers\u2019 guard rotation and could showcase those skills with extended minutes going forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Dalton Knecht<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: 800px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBAw7GKD4y\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3651px; aspect-ratio: 3651\/2434;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s been an otherwise forgetful season for sharpshooting wing <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/knechda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dalton Knecht<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who also found himself <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/12\/15\/lakers-bold-decision-dalton-knecht-g-league\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shuttling between the NBA and the G League<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and part of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2026\/01\/28\/insider-tabs-lakers-forward-candidate-for-fresh-start\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trade rumors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that ultimately bore no fruit. He has averaged 4.0 points across 50 games on .446\/.304\/.700 splits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like James Jr., however, Knecht\u2019s time on assignment has been a completely different story. He recently dropped <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LakersLegacyPod\/status\/2040295483621748772\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24 points<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and 13 rebounds to lead South Bay to the Western Conference Finals.
