Following a decisive victory against the Lakers, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is finally ending the MVP race and all debates for good. It’s definitely something that many fans were looking forward to. After all, SGA is now good to sit out the final games of the season. What makes it even more interesting is that Shai has a very great case to win the award.

In a game where Los Angeles was expected to put up a fight, OKC was bombarding them from start to finish. Luka Doncic was expecting to go head-to-head against SGA. Instead, it was another blowout win. The Thunder were drilling their threes, crushing their opponents’ will. Their defense was forcing a whole lot of turnovers, and LA simply didn’t have an answer. To make it even worse, Doncic was playing horribly while SGA was thriving for the entire night.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Is Ending The MVP Race For Good

By now, it’s safe to say that the MVP race is definitely over. No bursts from candidates should definitely shake up the ladder at this point. Even with Victor Wembanyama making waves in the final stretch, there shouldn’t be any more discussion at this point. In fact, what fans should be discussing now is how historic a feat it is for SGA to win the MVP in back-to-back seasons. There’s no point in arguing, especially with the reigning MVP being consistent from start to finish.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9" image-id="fwuQKQaZELyw" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3900px; aspect-ratio: 3900/2700;" ></smartframe-embed>

A Nail in the Coffin for the MVP Race

We’ve seen how the disrespect has been louder against SGA this season. He’s being criticized as a free-throw merchant — even when Doncic is a mile ahead of free-throw attempts. We’ve seen comparisons about Wemby being more impactful — and yet Gilgeous-Alexander is still leading in clutch points and is on fire in the fourth quarters he’s playing in. Of course, the reigning MVP has shown that he can meet the moment with a brilliant performance against his fiercest rival in the MVP ladder, Nikola Jokic.

By now, there’s no argument left worth discussing. Of course, you can always point out that the Thunder aren’t done securing the first seed in the West. However, SGA has been lighting it up night in and night out, even continuing his streak of 20-point games afloat. Heck, he didn’t need to play another fourth quarter after pouring a convincing blowout win. The fact that he’s still the leading scorer says a lot about his game.

SGA was outstanding in 3 quarters of play!

🏀 28 PTS
🏀 7 REB
🏀 7 AST

The Thunder win big at home and improve to 16-1 in their last 17 games 🔥 pic.twitter.com/JLAqngq7fA

— NBA (@NBA) April 3, 2026

Against Doncic, SGA dropped a casual 28 points, seven assists, and seven boards. For those doing the free-throw game, Gilgeous-Alexander had only three attempts to Doncic’s six. Overall, it was a superb game from SGA, who continues to impress with his high level of play despite missing the most games since his second and third seasons with the Thunder. We all know how many different names have been standing against Gilgeous-Alexander throughout the season. Yet, one can simply say that the only constant thing is him against every other contender in the MVP Race.

Shai’s Final Game Of The Season?

Oklahoma City will be playing the Utah Jazz in the final leg of its five-game homestand. Many fans have been speculating when Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault will opt to sit out his starters and key players in preparation for the NBA Playoffs. For starters, SGA is now fully eligible for the end-of-season awards, reaching the minimum of games played at 65. It does seem easy to expect that the likes of Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, Isaiah Hartenstein, Lu Dort, and Ajay Mitchell will be sitting out the final stretch. Gilgeous-Alexander, however, may or may not play further.

Luka scored less than 20 points in both games against the Thunder this season

Shai hasn’t scored less than 20 since 2024

— Gur Singh (@HoopFocusX) April 3, 2026

Again, Daigneault may consider playing his starters down to the final game. OKC needs to go 4-1 in their remaining games if they are going to secure the first seed in the Western Conference. For context, both Jokic and Wembanyama will be playing at least four more games to be eligible for the MVP. For the Thunder, however, it will be a major difference if they have their starters playing for the final five games of the season.

That being said, it is still possible that SGA has already done logging games for the 2025-26 season. Considering that he’s been facing some injury issues for some parts of the campaign, Daigneault may consider resting him. This, of course, may then end up pushing more minutes for J-Dub, Holmgren, and the rest of the team.

Curtain Call For The MVP Race

Much of the season has been about how SGA is managing to keep OKC a competitive team despite their injuries. Sure, there were higher expectations for the team, but the Thunder was keeping itself afloat with Gilgeous-Alexander’s antics. It’s hard to ignore his impressive games to begin the year, and it’s a sure bet that he’s still growing his game. For a guard shooting at a high volume to still have 55% shooting from the field is astounding. In fact, among the top 15 leaders in field goal percentage, SGA is the lone guard in that category.

The MVP race might be over

SGA is at 86%
Luka is at 1% pic.twitter.com/bNwTdmqkZX

— NBACentral (@TheDunkCentral) April 3, 2026

SGA’s also averaging 31.6 points per game on 66.6% true shooting. That’s an elite, effective, and efficient shooting from a guard like him. Guards should not be able to come up with those kinds of numbers, considering that they miss more shots than centers do. The fact that he’s still sitting out more fourth quarters this season than last year is a huge sight to behold. The Thunder haven’t been winning dominantly (until this win against LA). So it’s definitely baffling to have him lead in clutch points, despite playing only 42 fourth quarters this year.

By now, you either have to hate the Thunder because they beat your favorite team, or just don’t like basketball at all, to not root for SGA’s case for the MVP. It’s been clear as day since the beginning of the season. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is cruising for back-to-back MVP seasons, and we’re all just living in his world.

Featured Image: Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images

While there’s plenty of discussion around the MVP ladder this season, there’s no doubt that only one man has been consistent.
