That was what most fans know at this point. Instead, SGA’s MVP case gets a dent with the latest update on the KIA MVP Ladder. And the disrespect has never been louder for the reigning MVP.

In case you didn’t know, SGA dropped to the second for the first time in a long while. The OKC star has been holding the top spot of the MVP ladder for most of the season. After what has been an impressive stretch for the Thunder, most critics have him as the clear winner now. Some even say that he’s worthy of becoming the first unanimous MVP since Stephen Curry in 2016.

The Shai Gilgeous-Alexander MVP Disrespect Just Got Real

Instead, Victor Wembanyama just took over the top spot of the MVP ladder. In the latest edition, SGA has dropped to second place, with Wembanyama now in first place for the first time. What’s so funny about that is its timing. It came just a few days after the center “pleaded” his case to the media about the MVP.

We’re yet to see a very bad game from SGA, and yet somehow, he suddenly became second place in the MVP ladder.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9" image-id="fwuQKQaZELyw" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3900px; aspect-ratio: 3900/2700;" ></smartframe-embed>

SGA’s Been Consistent For The Whole Season

If there’s one thing that Gilgeous-Alexander has been able to do for the whole year, it’s to stay consistent. The fact that his 20-point game streak still lives on is proof of that. In fact, SGA still remains consistent in a loss. Before the Celtics defeated the Thunder, SGA was 13-0 since returning to action from a prolonged absence. There wasn’t even a hint of a struggle from him in that loss.

We went from unanimous MVP talks for SGA to Wemby being the front runner in 2 weeks because the guy said he plays defense.

NBA media is absolutely horrible at what they do.

SGA is also a very good defender…

— D (@SummerAweNBA) March 28, 2026

While the rest of Oklahoma City struggled, Gilgeous-Alexander dropped one of his best games of the season. The reigning MVP was making one bucket after another. He scored 33 points on an efficient 10-12 shooting, including three out of four threes attempted. SGA also had two steals, which is just a casual night for him.

Yet, somehow, he still dropped to second in the MVP race. If we’re going to dig deeper into consistency, then look no further than how the MVP race has been for the whole year. For the first three months, it was SGA and Nikola Jokic locked up, with SGA taking the upper hand.

Then there’s the sudden rise of Cade Cunningham and the Detroit Pistons. Despite OKC being plagued with injuries, SGA still maintained the lead heading into the All-Star Break. Even Boston’s Jaylen Brown could not budge Gilgeous-Alexander’s hold at the top. Of course, one can also remember Luka Doncic’s historic scoring stretch for like a week or more. Many fans even dubbed him the “March Valuable Player” for his antics.

i think a lot of people mix Wemby’s sudden BITW level ascendance with actually earning MVP. adjusted impact isn’t the same as total pic.twitter.com/hfLybrMZJ0

— Jase (@jasehoops) March 29, 2026

However, then again, neither of these candidates managed to edge SGA out of the top spot. Now heading into the final days of March, somehow, Wembanyama suddenly got the jump. Consistency has been SGA’s tone in the MVP race, and it is definitely a big thing to consider.

Pleading A Case?

It can be remembered that Wembanyama was asked what his case would be for the MVP. There’s no denying that his defense has been phenomenal. He’s winning the Defensive Player of the Year, no doubt. However, he also pointed out almost sweeping OKC this season. Sure. That does speak for itself. The Spurs won three straight against the Thunder, but lost the final one.

SGA is having the most efficient 30 point season in NBA history.

Leading the NBA in clutch scoring.

Best win/loss record of any MVP candidate.

His 6 best teammates have missed 45, 32, 23, 23, 13 & 10 games this season.

Win/Loss
SGA: 49-12
Wemby: 45-13
Luka: 41-20
Jokic: 36-22… https://t.co/aQmb3ORAhl

— Brandon Rahbar (@BrandonRahbar) March 27, 2026

Whatever his case, it does seem that the media took his word for it. Now suddenly he’s a top candidate who may even sway voters. Now this sounds similar, does it? Yes, Joel Embiid won the so-called “sympathy MVP” in 2022-23. He claimed that he’s been playing hard and deserved the MVP. To many fans’ surprise, it did sway a huge portion of voters, and Embiid went on to win the award.

What made it worse is that there were also constant criticisms of Jokic’s game at that time. Now, we’re seeing the same media come up with attacks on SGA’s game, his free throws, his impact on the floor, and so on. And all of a sudden, Wembanyama also comes atop the latest MVP ladder.

SGA Should Be The Unanimous MVP

While the last two games against the Bulls and the Knicks were quite disappointing by SGA’s standards, it goes without saying that he deserves to win the MVP unanimously. He may have some struggles as of late, but MVPs always find a way to contribute and deliver. Gilgeous-Alexander, for what it’s worth, definitely has his MVP case punctuated with his all-around game.

SHAI. The conversation all season long has been SGA versus every other candidate; there’s no reason it should change now.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander deserves to win this year’s MVP, unanimous or not.

Featured Image: Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images

With a few more games left in the NBA season, it does seem that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has the MVP locked up for good, right?
